I was on a mission to find a jumping rope. Mix up my exercise efforts. I couldn't find the one buried in our garage. So I checked our thrift stores. Finally today I found not one, but two. So I tried them out. One was too short. The other the wrong weight. I can return them. But what is hanging on a hook under the coats by the front door? Not one, but two jump ropes. Just right.

And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19 ESV

We Meet Again

I was willing to take my chances. Let a student practice giving a hair cut. And save money. So I tried out the local beauty school a few weeks ago. And ran into my neighbor who had the same idea. Today my husband went in for a haircut and had a good conversation with the young man who cut his hair. We knew him when he was a middle schooler. As we left, who should walk in? My neighbor.

Good Times

Oral Report Done

That's the way to do it. Work hard on your oral report. Practice often. And volunteer to go first. Another successful public speaking experience for my youngest. This time it was a poem about Jonah and the whale.

Ready to Clean-Up

The clean-up has just begun. My husband helped friends cut up a tree that took down sections of their fence and fell in their neighbor's yard. I'm sure there will be lots more clean-up projects after all this snow melts.

Snow Church

The last time we were in that gym my daughter had a volleyball game. Today the church and school graciously let our church hold our service in their gym. It was family style. With babies, toddlers and children in the service. Crayons and activity sheets provided. With great teaching on the importance of friendship in marriage.

Storybook Wedding

Let the wedding go on as scheduled. Snow and all. Have the wedding ceremony and reception in the family center even though the power was restored to both sides of the church. It was a beautiful and meaningful wedding ceremony for two Americans who met in China.

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 ESV

Nice Hat

Times like this we really miss our big kids. They would have so much fun in the snow. My husband has been a good sport to play in the snow with our youngest.

Today is the third snow day. Maybe tomorrow the ice will thaw and be a late start. If we don't lose power.

Stay Home Day

We're not going anywhere. Not with 10 inches or more of snow. The garbage truck made it through our loop, with chains. Lifted each can and shook it off first.

This is a good day to clean house. But first I'll have another cup of tea. And make some muffins.

Love my Dad!

I grew up feeling safe. Loved unconditionally. And knew I was prayed for. I am thankful for my dad every day. If there wasn't snow and ice we would be would be having tea and cake together today.

The Grace Card

It was perfect timing. My husband and I rented the movie The Grace Card. In time for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday. Relationships, race, reconciliation. I loved this movie. (Note: I'll probably wait until my 11-year-old is a little older to watch it, just because it would be a little intense for her.)

Real Snowy Sunday

We didn't know what we would wake up to. We ended up with a little snow and ice. But not enough to keep us home from church. I'm glad we didn't have to miss the first sermon in the Real Marriage series.

I could open a can of pumpkin and try the recipe. Or blend the baked spaghetti squash from my mom. And we have a winner! Flavor and texture were excellent.

Pumpkin Pie Flop

I tried the pumpkin pie recipe in my favorite old cookbook, More with Less. Not a winner. I liked the flavor but not the texture. In fairness, I should give it another chance. Try the recipe with whole eggs, and not whip the egg whites and fold them in. Good thing I made a sample little pie so we could taste test it. And not take any to community group potluck.

Fun with Fourth Graders

We are always thankful for work for my husband. But it was extra special to sub in the 4th grade class at the Christian School last week. He had those kids when they were first graders.

Public Commitment of Faith

I always feel a little teary. At baptisms. Especially when I see children get baptized. By their dad. Or a young man get baptized and then hug his wife and little baby. Our church regularly holds baptisms. They bring in a heated tub and have towels and extra changes of clothes. You can get saved and get baptized. And make a public commitment of faith in Jesus Christ.

And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, "See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?" Acts 8:36 ESV

Tail Waggin' Reunion

Someone found our dog out on the main road yesterday. Checked in with a vet but couldn't keep our golden retriever. So a friend of theirs kept our dog overnight. Red was well-cared for and was even allowed to sleep at the foot of their bed! The first vet I called was the right one. Which led to this morning's tail-waggin' reunion.

Lost Dog

I hope we wake up to a nice surprise. And find our dog at the door. Our beloved golden retriever has gone missing. He escaped through an opening in the fence and has not returned.

This year I finally pursued my dream of making Christmas gifts. I started small and sewed little bears for our Happy Birthday Jesus party and for gifts. I found velour and other soft fabric on sale ($1.29 each) at the Goodwill, disguised as clothing.

New Trainer

My personal trainer moved away. And I fell (figure of speech) off the treadmill. I am happy to report I have a new trainer. My youngest stepped up and encouraged me to start walking again. Two laps yesterday. One lap today before it started raining.

But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified. 1 Corinthians 9:27 ESV

Something New

Time for something new. Resolutions and good intentions don't work. That's because human effort will only get me so far. So this year I am asking the Holy Spirit to work in and through me. He can do that.

How much is your time worth? I talked to a guy at the grocery store who paid $3 more for dog food so he didn't have to make another stop. I paid 15 cents to make a photo copy at the store so I could use the drive-through at the bank. But then I wasted my afternoon trying to make business calls on the day before a holiday.

The Little Guys

We call them the "little guys." They are our friends' two foster boys. The good news is that they are going to be adopted. Along with their siblings that are with another foster family. But we are all going to miss them.

Puppet Show Love

One week ago I made hand motions all the way home from church. Trying to get the hang of puppetry before our impromptu performance for the neighbor kids. I'm not very good at it. But I did it to the glory of God and to bless our neighbor kids.

Christmas Tree Love

I am always thankful for whatever we have. From straggly Charlie Brown trees to take-a-saw-and-make a-memory to amazing Christmas trees left at our front door.

This year's tree is a Fraser fir that friends picked out and delivered. It is full and beautiful. My husband and daughter decorated it with white lights and red and white balls. Simple elegance.

Nativity Lights

Everyone wants to know if I'm ready. Have all my shopping done? Gifts wrapped? Cookies baked? No, no, and no. Christmas letter written? Sorry. But we have lights. A beautiful tree. And Nativity lights in our front yard to remind us what Christmas is all about.

Use What You Have Game

I like to play a game called, "Use What You Have." When we ran out of room at our party, we used the hallway. My husband used what he had, painter's tape, to mark out numbers on the floor.

The kids marched around until our friend Dan stopped playing the guitar. My husband drew a number and whoever was standing on that number won a prize. Thanks to my parents and a friend who donated prizes for our party!

Happy Birthday Jesus!

Our community group worked as a team and pulled off a fun event. Children came from all corners of our loop. We hosted 16 children and 12 adults, including us. We had coloring sheets, a word search, stockings to decorate with glitter glue, a game, music, cake, and a special puppet show production (read: improv).

Each child went home with a stocking filled with goodies. And fun memories of a Happy Birthday Jesus party.

whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies--in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. 1 Peter 4:11 ESV

Remember Mary

I will remember Mary surrounded by the children. She loved volunteering in my husband's first grade class when he taught at the Christian school.

I will miss seeing her sit at the back of Bible Study Fellowship.

She lost her courageous battle with leukemia and other infections today.

Good Conversations

I need to be ready. For those conversations about issues of the heart. And Jesus. Today I talked with someone who has a lot of questions about the Trinity. Another person asked me what happens when you die. Then tonight I met a woman at a choir concert. We had a good conversation about how God leads and guides.

Community Group and Real Marriage

It took our whole community group. One person to pick up our daughter from school. One couple to host our daughter for the night. Another one in our group to give her a ride to school tomorrow. All so we can take a day trip to Bellevue to hear Pastor Mark Driscoll give two sermons on marriage. And hear from his wife Grace.

What a great way to spend our 26th wedding anniversary!

My cousin liked the book so much she ordered a case. And gave them away. I am almost finished reading Gospel: Recovering the Power that Made Christianity Revolutionary by J.D. Greear. It is that good.

Iron Blessings

I thought I was helping a friend with a chore she couldn't do. Ironing dress shirts. But it was more than that. As I ironed, I thanked God for the friends who have helped me iron, fold laundry, and sort socks when I was in bed. I am grateful for better health right now.

But the best part of this chore was delivering the ironed shirts to my friend and having the chance to visit, read scripture, and pray together.

Christmas Comes to Town

Our little town knows how to celebrate Christmas. The main street was blocked off tonight. Shops were open late. Free hot cider. Bonfires. Live music. Including shivering angels, shepherds, wise men, Mary and Joseph. The kids from the Christian School did a great job.

Tomorrow is the parade.

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!" Luke 2:13-14 ESV

Mercy and Grace

I thought it was a reasonable question. What next, Lord? But after a year and a half, we are no closer to knowing what that means for my husband. A couple job possibilities haven't panned out. Meanwhile, God faithfully provides for our needs. And gives us mercy and grace.

Little Jobs

My husband spent part of the day on the golf course. Overlooking the golf course, that is. We are always thankful for little jobs like cleaning roofs and gutters.

Great Series

We caught some of the sermons a couple months into the series. And ended up staying.

Today was the 100th and last sermon in Luke. I'm thankful that my Bible Study Fellowship lessons pick up where Luke ends.

Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. While he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven. And they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the temple blessing God. Luke 24:50-53 ESV

Great Day

It wasn't a good day for throwing a frisbee. Or blowing bubbles. Or having a picnic lunch. Like we've done on other visits. But it was a great day for riding scooters at the park in downtown Bellingham. Watching otters play in the bay. And taking pictures in the wind.

Royal Treatment

Thanksgiving to Go

They couldn't come to us. So we packed a turkey, pie-making supplies, etc. and came to them.

My daughter's roommates are gone so we have the house to ourselves. Perfect for hosting Thanksgiving with two of our adult children.

Remember the Lord

Why did the Israelites wander in the desert for 40 years? Because of their lack of faith. It was one year for every day of the scouting trip. I wonder what my report would have been like. Would I have focused on the giants or the land flowing with milk and honey that God was waiting to give me?

I want to be more like Joshua and Caleb. And remember that the Lord is with me.

If the LORD delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land that flows with milk and honey. Only do not rebel against the LORD. And do not fear the people of the land, for they are bread for us. Their protection is removed from them, and the LORD is with us; do not fear them." Numbers 14:8, 9 ESV

My Brother

I always wanted an older brother. Now I have a husband who is gentle with me and takes good care of me. Today in my Bible study I read how Jesus considers Himself my brother. The perfect brother. I am loved.

All About Jesus

Thanksgiving Dinner Love

For once I didn't pause dinner and take a photo. But it was a beautiful spread. My mother-in-law sure knows how to put on a nice dinner. Barbecued salmon, potatoes done to perfection, fresh green beans, apple salad, and rolls. And for dessert, blackberry pie from the berries we picked together this summer.

New Generation of Heroes

I have some new heroes. Along with my grampa, cousins, and friends. Two neighbor kids have joined the Army and Navy. One is in boot camp and the other leaves this week. I watched them play in the street, sit at my counter and eat, graduate from high school, and now they are off to serve our country.

Ravioli Love

My husband was inspired by something he saw on tv. A chef made homemade ravioli using wonton wrappers. My husband used ground turkey and Italian cheese. Put some marinara sauce loaded with veggies in the crock pot. And invited his parents to join us for dinner. Yum!

With a Big Smile

We had a little mishap with a glass lid. No one got hurt, as I like to say. But I missed the lid to my favorite all-purpose pan. My daughter helped me make a paper template. We went to a little thrift store down the street and checked out their bin of lids. Bingo. Back in business. For 99 cents.

Crushed for Our Iniquities

It's hard to believe we are coming to the end. Our pastor has been preaching through the book of Luke. For over two years. Today we heard how and why Jesus died on the cross. Jesus suffered so we don't have to. That is Love.

Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his stripes we are healed. College Reunion

Skate Love

First Day of School

Redeem the Night

This had to be my favorite Halloween ever. Our community group spent the evening at our home. Plus my parents. We had three kinds of soup. Bread. Hot wassail. Cupcakes. Fruit. Lots of help answering the door. We probably had 150 kids come by.

Second Chance

Today's sermon included one of those loose ends. Scripture does not say what happened to the murderer Barabbas after he was released in Jesus' place. He was given a second chance. A do-over. I hope he used it well.

I am thankful for the second chances God has given me. Am I making the most of them?

He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, for whom they asked, but he delivered Jesus over to their will. Luke 23:25 ESV

Culture Day

What to do? Turn off the lights? Go to a church party? Stock up on candy? Especially where we live. Van-loads of children invade our loop on Halloween, not to mention the dozens of munchkins that live in our 64-home development.

We have a plan to redeem the night. We invited our community group families to hang out at our place. Hand out candy. We can do that.

Sitting Still

We must have been sitting very still. Concentrating on our Bible study lesson. As we shared what we have been learning this week. In the classroom off the gym at church. So still that the sensor did not detect any movement and the lights went out.

Oral Report Report

I've learned about elephants, the missionary Gladys Alward, and heard poetry recited. But today I missed our daughter's oral report because I wasn't feeling well. My husband was able to go and hear our daughter talk about Florence Nightingale. In a first-person perspective. She did a great job.

Meet Margaret
