Ready for a Mother-Daughter Adventure

It was a mother-daughter adventure with a mission. I drove my mom's car to Port Angeles (just over two hours away) for the first leg of our journey. Parked at a cousin's house. Walked a couple blocks to the bus stop. Short bus ride to the ferry.

Victoria, British Columbia, here we come! More photos and stories to come on the blog this week.

Pictured: Ready for our adventure! With thanks to my son who took this photo before we drove away.

Keep Coming Back

Those suckers are persistent! The ornamental cherry tree in our backyard keeps sending up new shoots. Our son dug them out and put rocks around the tree. And they're back. Kind of like old habits!

So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. Romans 6:11 ESV

Out with the Old

We heard they were remodeling a local McDonald's. Actually they are completely rebuilding it. After they tear it all the way down. We'll have to meet for coffee somewhere else for the next couple months. And then we can make some new memories.

End of Summer Tradition

We like our end of summer tradition. Have a Life Group barbecue in Olympia. Not all of us could come this year, but had a great time with those who were there.

Pictured: Enjoying our hosts' friendly dogs and a visiting granddaughter. The dahlia on the left is not as big as it looks, but it was beautiful!

Remembering a Fun Wedding 30 Years Ago

Thirty years ago we were part of a fun wedding. It was super well organized, with tender moments, and lots of great food. Fitting for my middle sister and her husband. Happy 30th anniversary, Ed and Kath! Love you guys!

Remembering Our Loved Ones

I still think they were gone too soon. But I trust God's perfect timing. Yesterday would have been my parents' 56th wedding anniversary. And today marks two years since my father-in-law passed away. We miss them every day.

Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints. Psalm 116:15 ESV

Prepare to Wait

It's a good idea to always carry a book. Especially when you go to the tire shop. You might be there a while. I'm enjoying Emily P. Freeman's book, "A Million Little Ways."

and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. Romans 5:5 ESV

Watch Them Grow

I'm having fun with the plants in my kitchen window. I moved the little baby succulents to another pot and they are doing great.

The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. Genesis 1:12 ESV

Wash Off

I went through a shower today. At the car wash! Good to clean off the dust and ash.

Flowers and More

I paused on my dash through the smoky air to the car to take a photo of the flowers. And was surprised when I looked at my phone later. I had a moth photo bomber!  How fun!

Close to the Action

How close can you get? Our son found great tickets to Sunday's Mariner's game with the Dodgers. What a fun day for a father and son. Hardly dimmed by the bruising loss for our home team.

Pictured: My husband forgot his Mariner's shirt for after he served in Kids' Ministry at Harbor Church.

Happy Birthday to Our Daughter!

Can't believe it's been 27 years since that beautiful baby girl joined our family. Happy birthday to our older daughter!

Listen When You Can

I like to carry a book when I have waiting time. But what if you are in stop and go traffic? Like Friday's adventure. It was the perfect time to catch up on a sermon I missed at church. I listened on the Harbor Church app. At home you can listen online on your computer. Works for me!

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Matthew 6:33 ESV

Kindness of a Stranger

Here's the rest of the story from yesterday.

As I waited (start truck, move a couple feet, turn off truck, repeat) to have my turn to unload the tires, the man behind me came over and told me he heard that if you only had tires, you could go to the front of the line. I was hesitant to give up my spot in line after waiting two hours. But he offered to let me back in if it didn't work. I saw trucks filled with tires going by me. So I drove to the front to find out everyone had to wait in line.

I was ready to give up and go home. But I drove down to see if there was a way to get back in line in front of the guy I talked to. The guy jumped out of his truck and offered to throw my tires in his truck. On top of all his stuff. Mission accomplished. Thanks to the kindness of a stranger.

Pictured: The truck in front of me.
Not pictured: Dozens of trucks in front of me and the dozens behind me, including the kind stranger's.

Day of Caring 2018

Today was a good day to get rid of some tires in our backyard. For free. If you don't mind waiting in line for a couple hours. I only took tires. I saw trucks loaded with mattresses, furniture, and other miscellaneous garbage.  With thanks to United Way of Mason County and all the volunteers that helped with this community event.

Jump Start My Prayers

It's good to go back to the Valley. I've been reading in the Valley of Vision as a way to jump start my prayers. It is a collection of Puritan prayers and devotions, and they knew how to express their prayers so beautifully.

From today's reading:
Nothing exceeds thy power,
Nothing is too great for thee to do,
Nothing too good for thee to give.

'Ah, Lord GOD! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you. Jeremiah 32:17 ESV

Making a Comeback

Remember how I cut the plants on the windowsill way back? I am happy to report that there are new leaves.

Pictured: If you look closely, there are tiny leaves on the Kalanchoe plant.

He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. Psalm 1:3 ESV

Think about Fall

It's not too early to think about the next season. What does Fall hold? I will have Monday and Wednesday morning commitments with Bible Study Fellowship. I want to plan a daily routine with time for prayer and Bible study. Starting with Keller's devotional in Proverbs in the morning, and Keller's devotional in Psalms at night. And block out time for my BSF lessons and other writing.

Pictured: A sample from the Keller's devotional in Psalms.

Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. Psalm 90:14 ESV

Doves in the Neighborhood

When we moved across town, I missed the sound of the doves. Sometimes we have a bevy of them in our neighborhood. But mostly we have one pair that land on our roof.  Our daughter captured this photo.

For every beast of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills. I know all the birds of the hills, and all that moves in the field is mine. Psalm 50:10-11 ESV

5th Avenue Sandwich Love

We've been waiting for an Olympia sandwich place to reopen in their new location. And now they offer breakfast and dinner. My husband and I split an omelette for breakfast. Great food and service. We will definitely go back!

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV

Whatever You Call it

I've been calling it salsa. But technically it is probably pico de gallo. I don't use an exact recipe. Just throw together some tomatoes, cilantro, red onion or whatever onion I have on hand, jalapeno if I have it, lime juice, garlic, and salt.

I usually rely on my food processor, but my son's Ninja Blender works well and is easy to clean up. Make sure to add tomatoes last and give it a couple pulses. Whatever you call it, it is yummy!

Queen of Hospitality

I love how my friend just opens her home. Invites groups of people over. Makes them feel welcome. Like today's lunch with several women and children. I knew one other woman, besides the host, and made some new friends.

Three Sisters, 25 years ago

Have you seen those recreated photo scenes? We should try to recreate this old photo of three sisters plus my son.

I still have those blankets, including the afghan our Gramma made when I graduated from high school. Just need to have both sisters in town.

Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. 1 Peter 4:8 ESV

Remembering Dad Together

It's hard to believe it's been one year. One year without our beloved dad, husband, and grandfather. I'm glad my sister and her daughters could come up from Oregon to be with Mom. Our other sister called to check in today.

Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Romans 5:2 ESV

Cool Thoughts

I'm looking at snow pictures and thinking cool thoughts. Thankfully we can keep our house relatively cool and I don't have to go out in the heat much.

Pictured: Our snow puppy, December, 2016. What's funny is that our dog likes to lie in the sun in about that same spot.

Window Succulents

I should have taken a before picture. I pruned my succulents way back. They were getting so overgrown and gangly. I think they will be happy and grow back in no time.

"I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. John 15:1-2 ESV

Harbor Kids Up Close

We don't usually serve as a team. I serve upstairs as a greeter, and my husband teaches Sunday school downstairs. But today his helper was not able to come. So I went downstairs and saw what it was like to be with the little kids. They are adorable! And had some of the sweetest, heartfelt prayers.

Pictured: My husband is so good with the kids. They are blessed to have him serve faithfully.

Instant Pot Applesauce Love

That was about the easiest applesauce I have ever made. Although I don't always pick the apples myself. Another winning Instant Pot recipe.

I enjoy Cooking with Karli's recipes.

She is like the ships of the merchant; she brings her food from afar. Proverbs 31:14 ESV

Instant Pot Applesauce

Prep Time 5 minutes Cook Time 4 minutes Total Time 19 minutes

Servings 8  Author Cooking with Karli

Ingredients 8 apples 1/2 -1 cup water 1/8 cup granulated sugar 1/2 tsp cinnamon

Instructions 1. Wash and cut the apples. You just want the core out of the apple. The slices don't need to be the same size or uniform. Mine usually are quite large. 2. Pour the water into the Instant Pot liner. The more water used the thinner the apple sauce will be. 1/2 cup of water yields a very thick applesauce. 3. Add the chopped apple to the Instant Pot. 4. Cook on Manual HIGH fro 4 minutes, NPR 5 minutes then finish off with a controlled quick release. 5. Use a fork and remove the Apple Peels out of the Instant Pot. 6. Whisk the applesauce and add in sugar and cinnamon if desired. 7. Keeps will in the fridge for up to 1 week

Christopher Robin Love

I am a big fan of Winnie the Pooh.  So it was fun to watch Christopher Robin on opening day. Loved the movie.

Fun to see it with my mother-in-law and daughter today.

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28 ESV

Apple Tree Love

I didn't bake any muffins today. But I did make an apple crisp! With apples picked from my friend's tree.  Works for us!

Library Bingo Love

It's an adventure to get across town. Our city streets are all torn up with construction projects. I appreciate how the local library is responding to the difficulties of  getting there. They made a game of it. What's the prize for completing the bingo card? Quote: "The prize is knowing that you have managed to navigate this crazy construction."
