Team Lofthus will Walk

I am excited to go for a walk next Saturday. Not just any walk. This is the Walk MS: Olympia 2017. My daughter is the captain for Team Lofthus. We welcome friends and family to sign up and join us. Or make a donation to a good cause.

For your steadfast love is before my eyes, and I walk in your faithfulness. Psalm 26:3 ESV

Coffee and Scones

With family in town, we know just where to go. Let's grab coffee and scones at our favorite bakery in town. Before they head back to Portland. Godspeed.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 ESV

Faith: Trusting the Promises of God

The current chapter in my leadership training Bible study is exactly what I need. Faith: Trusting the promises of God. I won't go into details on my blog, but our family is facing serious challenges. The kind that break your heart. All you can do is cry out for God to show up.

"Faith sees the promise and the Promiser and expectantly hopes."

"The amount of our faith does not determine whether God answers prayers, for it is the object of our faith, God Himself, who determines the outcome."

from Growing Kingdom Character by Tom Yeakley

Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead. He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again. You also must help us by prayer, so that many will give thanks on our behalf for the blessing granted us through the prayers of many. 2 Corinthians 1:9-11 ESV

Love and Pray

You hate to see friends and family go through difficult times. But you can't protect them. Only love and pray for God to see them through.

I appreciated today's Bible study lesson on First 5 about David facing Goliath. God has protected and provided in the past, and can be trusted for the future.

And David said, "The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine." And Saul said to David, "Go, and the LORD be with you!" 1 Samuel 17:37 ESV

Treasure by the Pound

I love my new pink Fiesta mug. My daughter found it at the thrift store. Fun to find treasures at the glassware rate of 39 cents per pound.

Pictured: Someone is watching me enjoy my tea.

Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us. Selah. Psalm 62:8 ESV

Harbor Church Women Love

I like grand openings and new beginnings. And first time events, like Harbor Church's Women's Ministry Event last Friday. They put on a fun night with plenty of time to visit with other women and be encouraged by a message from our pastor's wife. I loved the literary theme, with books on each table and book (gummy) worms to take home. I'm glad my mother-in-law was able to join me and meet my friends.  I look forward to monthly gatherings in the future!

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Hebrews 13:8 ESV

First Birthday Love

I'm not sure how long she will be considered a puppy. But our beloved fluff ball is one year old today!  Happy Birthday, Daisy!

Pictured: Look how little she was!

Now out of the ground the LORD God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. Genesis 2:19 ESV

Sugar Stop Cake Shop Pizza Love

It's the first day of spring break for your daughter. What are you going to do? Join Grandma for lunch! They have great pizza at the local bakery. Next time we'll have to try one of their dessert pizzas.

Pictured: For the record, I did not eat the whole pizza.

Produce Bargain Love

Mornings can be fruitful. But it's worth swinging by the marked down produce section all hours. You never know what bargains you will find. I get especially excited about $1 bags of colored peppers. I love our local Fred Meyer!

She is like the ships of the merchant; she brings her food from afar. Proverbs 31:14 ESV

That Friend

You know how there is that friend you can always call? I haven't needed any help or favors lately. But today I stopped by to deliver her birthday card. And locked my keys in the car. My friend's husband drove to my house to get the extra set of car keys. Good thing we only live two miles apart!

Happy Birthday!

Step Away Again

I lost my favorite exercise DVD in our move. I'm sure it will turn up eventually. In the meantime, I bought a replacement. Time to Step Away the Inches!

To Swirl or Not to Swirl

Some of my people went to Dairy Queen for a free cone tonight. I was busy with a women's Bible study cohort. But don't feel sorry for me. I already had my free cone today! Only mine was not a swirl cone.

Included for Dinner

My friend put on a nice St. Patrick's dinner tonight. Complete with corned beef and the fixings. The green table cloth and personalized name tags were a nice touch. Nice to be included!

Blintz Love

How about berry blintzes for breakfast? Thanks to the Basement Bistro at the hospital. Sounds like a plan. Nice to have my son's girlfriend here this weekend.

Green Jello Love

We celebrated one day early. With a St. Patrick's themed dinner at my mother-in-law's place last night. Her stuffed cabbage rolls were tasty! With a side of green jello. Works for us!

Five Minutes' Peace Love

I thought I recognized what the little boy was happily reading in the shopping cart at the thrift store. Sure enough, it was Five Minutes' Peace by Jill Murphy. I love that book!

I blogged about it 10 years ago.

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world." John 16:33 ESV

Tulip Delivery

I wasn't sure who was so kind to bring a bouquet of tulips. My husband was at work, so it wasn't him. It was my mother-in-law! Too bad I wasn't home to make tea or coffee for us.

He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:8 ESV

What He Does For Us

Why is that man lying on the ground under a desk? It's just my husband, disassembling furniture at the Habitat for Humanity store so it will fit in our car. The things he does for love!

Pictured: My daughter's new desk, before it was taken apart to transport. And then put back together in her room.

A Little Recognition

My daughter has worked hard in her first two quarters at community college. Today she received recognition for her good grades first quarter. Way to go!

Listen to the Sisters

Always good to have our older daughter home for the weekend. Enjoy a cup of tea at the counter. Don't forget honey for hers. Make extra oatmeal for breakfast. Listen to the sisters laugh.

Breakfast for Four

Table for four please. Actually, we can seat ourselves. Breakfast in the Basement Bistro at the local hospital works for us. Oatmeal with yogurt, fruit, and granola for me. Plus one egg over medium. I always enjoy the Batdorf and Bronson coffee. Good times.

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV

Remembering Grammy D

Sharing my sister's memories of our beloved Great Grammy D:
Thinking about a special role model, my great-grandma, Grammy D, born this day in 1899. She had a genuine faith, praying and reading her Bible daily, in spite of her poor vision, and late in life still kneeling to pray. Though I grew up far away, we had Grammy D's regular blue aerogrammes keeping us informed, and over her lifetime she must have sent thousands of cards to extended family-- special ones with a $1 bill for our birthdays. Her schooling ended around age 10 when her family emigrated from the Isle of Man to become homesteaders in Montana, but she always kept learning and was often more up-to-date on international current events than me. I saw her hospitality showered on family (tea and gingersnaps anyone?) but learned their home had always been a welcoming place. Her white braids across her head were such a strong image in my childhood, but now I also realize a little what it must have been like outliving her husband by almost 50 years, and the effort she put into cultivating friendships with people of all ages. I hope I stand tall and walk fast like her, who lived independently till age 101. I never heard her be critical or negative, and I loved her matter-of-fact outlook, such as when she got a microwave at age 90: "Well, I learned how to cook on a woodstove, and then an electric stove. I guess I can learn this now too." Her famous cinnamon rolls--she said they came about because money was no longer so tight and she had gotten bored with her chore of baking bread for her siblings and parents. And while others may have thought the train to the lumber mill going by her apartment was a nuisance, she said it brought back fond memories of the train bringing her husband back from logging. I'm so glad my kids got to know her before she died at 106, including her great-great-granddaughter namesake born a hundred years after her in March 1999.

Thanks to my sister, Kathleen, for letting me share this today.

Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: Proverbs 31:25-28 ESV

Relative Quiet

I can get a lot of reading and writing done for $1. Just order coffee and enjoy the relative quiet. I like the McDonald's in west Olympia because it's not too crowded. I spent time there last weekend while my husband had a meeting. Works for us.

Here We Snow Again

I couldn't believe it when I looked out the window this morning. We had snow again. At least on our end of town. My mother-in-law across town didn't get any.

Pictured: We had about two inches of snow this morning.

Whatever the LORD pleases, he does, in heaven and on earth, in the seas and all deeps. He it is who makes the clouds rise at the end of the earth, who makes lightnings for the rain and brings forth the wind from his storehouses. Psalm 135:6-7 ESV

Welcome Home Mission

I told the checker at the grocery store I was on a mission. I wanted to buy the flowers and get to my mother-in-law's place before she did. I set up a welcome home sign and flowers before she returned from being south for a couple weeks. And turned up the heat!

Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! Psalm 107:1 ESV

A Good Servant

Another good sermon in the series on 1 Timothy. Pastor Seth Winterhalter walks through the passage with a clear call to action. What are three actions every Christian takes to be a good servant of Christ Jesus? And as always, he includes an overview of the gospel, the "words of faith."

If you put these things before the brothers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have followed. Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. 1 Timothy 4:6-8 ESV

Eat Local

A local church encouraged people to eat local today. And make sure to tip generously. My daughter and I can do that. We stopped by our favorite bakery for treats and coffee for me.

Little Bit of Fun

I have slowed my roll on rummage sales. But when I saw the sign for one of my old favorites, I popped in for a couple minutes. I only had two dollars and some change. I can work with that.

Pictured: A few fun finds today, including books for my little friends: ten cents each. Shoes for my son: 50 cents. Beads for me. And two dolls from the free box.

Topside Coffee Cabin Love

I don't usually drive miles out of my way for a cup of coffee. But I had a break in my schedule earlier this week, and it was a beautiful sunny day. So I visited Topside Coffee Cabin in Steilicoom. where a friend of mine works. I tried the strawberry scone she had baked earlier in the day and bought a blue berry muffin for my daughter. Yum!

Pictured: I did not take any pictures of the cute little coffee shop but the view down the street is beautiful. This is only three miles from Chambers Bay.

Wednesday Flex

My daughter and I both have to flex on Wednesdays this quarter. I have Bible Study Fellowship before she has her first class at South Puget Sound Community College. So she gets to school a little early and I get to my study one or two minutes late for the singing. Works for us!
