Growing Kingdom Character

I was hoping I could share the book with my husband. And not highlight or write any answers. But I think I will get more out of this new leadership study at Harbor Church if I mark it up. I am in a group with three other women. Hopefully my husband can join a men's group down the road.

So Many Decisions

I don't miss the season of decision-making we had four years ago. Should we sell our house and rent a smaller house from a friend? Or should we become landlords? Then there was the whole screening process of selecting our renters. Yay for God's leading all along the way. And bringing us back to our home!

Something for Everyone

It was our turn for snacks again. After both services at Harbor Church in Olympia. Our Life Group puts together a nice selection, if I may say so. Today's spread included popcorn, gluten-free rice crackers, Ritz crackers, cheese, fruit, homemade cookies, lemon loaf, banana bread, red vines, Hostess Twinkies and Ding Dongs. Hopefully there was something to suit everyone.

No Appointment Required

I can eat oatmeal any day. (And I do!) So this morning I had the pancake breakfast. With Batdorf and Bronson coffee. My husband and I enjoy the tasty and inexpensive fare at our local hospital bistro. No doctor's appointment or lab work required.

Number is Called

I don't look forward to hanging out in government offices. It can take a long time. But my recent visit didn't take too long. It might have helped that I got there 30 minutes before they closed at noon on a Wednesday. Worked for me!

Pictured: Plenty of seats to choose from. Next time I will try to sit or stand where I can see the board so I will know when my number is called.

Music Blast from the Past

That's what I call cheap entertainment. And a blast from the past. I bought a couple music cds at a local thrift store for 10 cents each. Including WOW 1999, a compilation of 30 contemporary Christian music hits. I remember many of the songs.

But I will sing of your strength; I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning. For you have been to me a fortress and a refuge in the day of my distress. Psalm 59:16 ESV

Entertainment Center Reveal

In the spirit of using the materials at hand, my husband and son repurposed a cabinet. They turned it sideways, removed the doors. built a frame, moved the door pieces to the sides, added leftover hardwood flooring, painted it white, and added a board on top.

The board was a shelf in our living room in a former life. They found two inexpensive cabinet doors at our local Habitat store. Now we have a beautiful entertainment center. Love it!

Cabinet Before

Some home improvements are a process. Like the cabinet we bought at the Habitat ReStore to put in the master bathroom.

Only it was too big. How about we use it in the living room? Or deconstruct and completely repurpose it? My husband and son designed a new piece of furniture. I will reveal the transformation in tomorrow's post.

Little Moments

Enjoy the little moments. Like when you are waiting for the pizza.

Surprised at Church

I love having family come to town and surprise us at church. Great to see my sister, husband, and five daughters today!

Meet and Greet

You can count on her. Our puppy will watch you leave. And greet you when you return. Works for us!

Red Fiesta Bowl Love

My husband and son teamed up to buy me a special bowl for Valentine's Day. I love my red Fiesta bowl!

No Waitlist Required

Another successful college class registration for our daughter. She made it into the three classes (15 credits total) she was hoping for. No waitlist required. Just three more registrations to go until graduation from high school and community college.

My First Valentine

Yesterday I ran into the first man who loved me. That would be my dad. I always knew I could go to him and trusted him to have my best interests at heart. He gave my sisters and me a legacy of love.

Every Day

I confess I don't remember how we've celebrated every Valentine's Day for the last 30 years. There have been flowers. Cards. Little gifts. Sometimes bigger gifts. But on this day, and every day, I know I am loved. Day in. Day out. For the long haul. That is a precious gift.

Small Improvements

I feel like I am not very far in my journey. I want to declutter and organize. Like I've been saying for years. But there are small improvements. Like the front of our refrigerator. No more notes and cards and random items. Just the calendar on the side. I press on.

Dog WALKers

I wonder how long it will take our puppy to know how to spell. We talk about going for a W.A.L.K. before it happens.

Dutch Baby Love

I wanted to make something special for breakfast. For seven of us. So I tried America's Test Kitchen recipe for Dutch babies. They have done all the research. So I could make a beautiful puffed pancake. Times two. I think we found a new family favorite.

Pictured: My son took this photo of our breakfast pancake.

She is like the ships of the merchant; she brings her food from afar. Proverbs 31:14 ESV

    • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
    • 1 cup all-purpose flour
    • 1/4 cup cornstarch
    • 2 teaspoons lemon zest
    • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 3 large eggs
    • 1 1/4 cups skim milk ( lowfat or whole will work but the sides won't crisp as well)
    • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted and cooled
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 3 tablespoons confectioners' sugar

  1. Preheat oven to 450F with a rack in the middle.
  2. Brush surface and sides of large skillet with oil.
  3. Place skillet on oven rack and heat until oil is shimmering, about 10 minutes.
  4. Combine flour, cornstarch, lemon zest, and salt in large bowl.
  5. Whisk eggs in another bowl until frothy and light, about 1 minute.
  6. Whisk milk, butter, and vanilla into eggs until incorporated.
  7. Whisk one-third of milk mixture into flour mixture until no lumps remain, then slowly whisk in remaining milk mixture until smooth.
  8. Carefully pour batter into heated skillet and bake until edges of Dutch Baby are deep golden brown and crisp, about 20 minutes.
  9. Transfer skillet to wire rack and sprinkle Dutch Baby with lemon juice and confectioners’ sugar.
  10. Slide onto cutting board or plate and cut into wedges.
  11. Serve with sweet whipped cream and/or berries. This could even be the base for a savory.

No Purchase Necessary

I slow down in certain aisles. But it's time to keep walking by the knives. I have all I need. My daughter gave me a beautiful set for Christmas.

Wendy's with Dad

My mom had an eye appointment in Olympia today. So I got to spend some time with my dad. And you know what that means. We had lunch at Wendy's, of course.

Recipe Box Love

I love my recipe card box filled with cooking memories. There are handwritten recipes from my Texas aunt. She made the box and filled it as a wedding present--over 31 years ago now! There are also recipe cards from my wedding shower. I  recognize my mother-in-law's handwriting on several. Printed recipes from my sister. And many typewritten recipes from my mom. No wonder I cook with love!

Context and Culture

I love how Pastor Seth Winterhalter tackles books of the Bible with depth and clarity. We get the context and the culture--then and now.  Like the current series on 1 Timothy.

I missed one week so I was able to listen online. You can find Harbor Church sermons at:

The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life. 1 Timothy 1:16-17 ESV

Snow Day Schedule

It's nice to know you have a snow day the night before. My daughter's college made the decision last night. The local school district was a two-hour delay, but then cancelled school this morning. It's not easy to know what will happen when. The authorities have to make the best decision they can. Glad our three kids and puppy could enjoy the four inches of snow today.

"For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it. Find the Puppy

It's time for another round of Find the Puppy. I didn't know the forecast called for snow today. It's pretty, but I hope the roads are clear to drive to work and school tomorrow morning.

"Come now, let us reason together, says the LORD: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool. Isaiah 1:18 ESV

Great Companion

I haven't posted any photos of our puppy lately. She is over 10 months old and is a great companion. She loves her stuffed animal toys until she rips them up. The classic Kong chew toy is still going strong. She also likes arranging blankets and making a nest.  She's a keeper!

Mountain Views

I am thankful for the beautiful mountains we can see in our part of the country. From the snow-capped Olympics visible when driving in our area. To majestic Mount Rainier.

There and Back, Safely

I'm glad my husband could go to the conference sponsored by Bethlehem College and Seminary. But I'm super happy he came home safe and sound.  Praise the Lord for safe travels. There and back.

Pizza by the Slice Love

My mother-in-law and I had time for a quick lunch before I picked up my daughter. So I introduced her to our favorite pizza by the slice place in Olympia. Works for us!
