Loved Very Much

Happy birthday to our older daughter! I'm thankful she had almost 26 years of memories with her grandpa, who loved her very much.

Backseat Sisters

Lots of memories in the old family photos!

How do you Summarize?

How do you summarize 78 years of life, almost 55 years of marriage, and 40 years of international ministry? You can't, really. My mom did a good job writing an obituary for the local paper, with a few suggestions from my sisters and me.

It's a start. The family is working on sharing more of my dad's life and legacy at the memorial service.

He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?  Micah 6:8 ESV

No More Pills

There will be moments. And reminders that my dad is gone. Like the pills he didn't take last Tuesday. But he doesn't need them.

Or blood pressure checks. Finger pokes. Trying to remember where he left his cane. Or that noisy, annoying CPAP machine at night. My dad is truly in a better place. We have only just begun to miss him.

But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14 ESV

God's Blessings

My mom recognizes and appreciates God's blessings. Even in the hard times. Maybe especially in the hard times. I have witnessed her faith and grateful spirit my whole life.

Pictured: Donning a hat for a photo op and happy for the find of six papercuts with the Chinese character for "blessing" yesterday.

Thinking of Dad

It was a good mother-daughter trip to Olympia today. Got a lot done on planning the memorial service. Complete with a stop at Wendy's. We can do that.

Pictured: My mom put a straw in her coffee cup, just like my dad used to.

I have not hidden your deliverance within my heart; I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation; I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness from the great congregation. Psalm 40:10 ESV

Won't be the Same

I'm going to miss those stops at Wendy's. My dad loved simple pleasures like being with family. Drinking a cup of coffee. And those little chocolate frosties.

Overwhelming Gratitude

There is deep sadness, but also overwhelming gratitude. I am thankful for all the time I had with my dad. The last twenty years have been bonus years after his first heart attack. It is also a gift that my children have had the chance to know their grandpa.

Surprise Birthday Party

I can't believe we pulled off a surprise birthday party for our older daughter. A few days early. It was good to spend time with my sister's family, with those five darling girls.

We have a time and place for my dad's memorial service. We will gather in Olympia at our church.

What Dad Wanted

Even now that my dad is gone, we all know what he would have wanted. He wanted the family to enjoy being together. And for Jesus to be the focus, not himself. Good things to keep in mind as we plan a memorial service.

Pictured: I will miss seeing my parents side by side. Like this picture from March after a doctor's appointment.

Thank You for the Kindness

I can feel the love. And prayers. So many kind words of consolation and remembrances of my Dad. Though it is still hard to believe my dear, sweet, and funny dad is gone.

Gone Quickly

We knew this day would come. Eventually. But I was not ready to say goodbye to my beloved dad. Our kids' grandpa. Loving husband, brother, uncle, teacher, and friend of many around the world.

He suffered a massive heart attack this morning and was gone quickly. He was ready to go and be with Jesus.

Pictured: A fun memory of my dad and our daughters from a few years ago.

Hiker Family

It's great to hear the stories from Friday's hike to Mt. Rainier. Siblings and cousins got to spend time together. Priceless.

Mt. Rainier Memorial Hike

My father-in-law would have loved having the family together. In one of his favorite places. The family went on a memorial hike at Mt. Rainier yesterday. With four of his five children, one daughter-in-law, seven grandchildren, and one girlfriend.

My mother-in-law didn't go on the hike, but joined the group for a meal afterward. I stayed home with our dog.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Meet at Spiffy's

If you are going to drive down the freeway to meet up, you might as well meet at a restaurant like Spiffy's. My sister-in-law drove north from the Portland area. I drove south with my mother-in-law. And away they went for a family weekend.

I like to see what I can do with what I have. Make a simple banner to welcome our daughter home. Works for us!

Share the Driveway

Some people park like they own the whole driveway. In this case, that would be me. I intended to run in and leave again. Before anyone else came home to share the driveway. Silly me.

Two Men Rocks

I don't do any of the heavy lifting. I just find the ads for free landscaping materials and send my men. My husband and son loaded up as many rocks as they could handle tonight. Can't wait to see what they do in our front and back yard!

Pictured:  This photo does not do justice to the size and weight of these mini-boulders!

Happy Place

I finally found a happy place. For my plant. The plant (don't know the variety) loves the windowsill in the office. It didn't like the kitchen window, the living room window, or the counter. Makes me happy!

The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. Genesis 1:12 ESV

Chicken Love

I may be late to the party, but I tried Chick-fil-A for the first time today. I accidentally ordered a kid's meal. But it was enough to know I need to go back for more!

Special Bond

A friend of mine is having another baby. Eight years after her second child. Reminds me of when we had one more. Nine years after number three. There is a special bond between the older ones and the youngest. Then and now.

Cross the Line

Our puppy is getting better about obeying. Some of the time. Like staying out of the kitchen. She knows she isn't allowed to cross the line.

Reminds me of a toddler seeing how far he or she can go. Or myself, testing the limits.

Compact Little Bible

I found a compact little Bible at a rummage sale. Perfect for taking to church. Or I could give it away. Even better, return it to the rightful owner, who accidentally left his Bible on the books for sale. Glad it all worked out.

I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word. Psalm 119:16 ESV

King Solomon's Reef Love

I heard good things about a diner in Olympia, so we checked it out. Breakfast anytime? Yes, please. King Solomon's Reef had great food and friendly service. My husband and I shared a veggie omelet and one of my mother-in-law's waffles. Next time I might try the breakfast burrito.

I do recommend going on the weekend when you don't have to fight for a parking spot.

Rich in Love and Good Memories

I wonder if they celebrate birthdays in heaven. Today would have been my father-in-law's 78th birthday. One year ago he was having a birthday in the hospital, and trying to get well enough to come home.

So today we remember a life well-lived. Rich in love and good memories. Shared a meal with my mother-in-law. And enjoyed some chocolate cupcakes.

Organic Cabbage Love

I found a way to improve my favorite tangy cabbage salad recipe from Mark Bittman. I used organic cabbage, which really bumped up the flavor and texture. I liked the rough chop, instead of shredding, too. Organic works for me!

Bead Legacy
