Goodbyes of 2017

I love this photo of my parents when I ran into them at a favorite thrift store in February. My dad had his cane, walkie talkie and trademark sweet smile. Probably after a doctor's appointment.

No more doctors or canes for my dad now. He went quickly after a massive heart attack in August.

It is always hard to pick one photo for the year. And hard to say goodbye.

"Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. John 14:1-3 ESV

Ready to Board

It was nice of our taxi driver to take a photo of us. And pack a lunch for the ferry ride. Thanks to our older daughter for hosting us and giving a ride to catch an early morning ferry from Bainbridge Island. Before we caught the Victoria Clipper in Seattle.

Pictured: Ready to board the ferry at 6 am.

For I know that the LORD is great, and that our Lord is above all gods. Whatever the LORD pleases, he does, in heaven and on earth, in the seas and all deeps. Psalm 135:5-6 ESV

Before Dark

I'm glad we arrived at the garden before dark. We were able to see the Japanese gardens in Butchart Gardens before they closed that section at 4 pm. I would love to return in the spring and see everything in bloom.

And return another Christmas season and see the lights again.

Pictured: My husband in the snowy and scenic Japanese garden this week.

Praise the LORD from the earth, you great sea creatures and all deeps, fire and hail, snow and mist, stormy wind fulfilling his word! Mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars! Psalm 148:7-9 ESV

Victoria Anniversary Getaway

You could call it a second honeymoon. Or special 32nd anniversary getaway. My husband and I enjoyed our visit to Victoria, BC this week. Two days and one night, with a bonus night at our daughter's place on Bainbridge Island.

Pictured: We were there! Victoria, BC

Christmas Snow

Christmas came early this year. Snow on Christmas Eve!

Christmas 2017

Merry Christmas from our family to yours!

Countdown to Christmas Cookies

Let the cookie decorating begin. Our older daughter knows how to fold parchment paper into fab frosting bags.

For it is you who light my lamp; the LORD my God lightens my darkness. Psalm 18:28 ESV

Christmas Spirit

Time to get in the Christmas spirit! One and all.

December Breakfast Love

A hot breakfast on a cold morning sounds good! Oatmeal for my husband and me, eggs and bacon for our son. Happy December morning to us!

Pictured: Our son is good at taking photos of the three of us.

As for you, O LORD, you will not restrain your mercy from me; your steadfast love and your faithfulness will ever preserve me! Psalm 40:11 ESV

Almost Next Year

Usually I have the birthdays marked by now. But this year I almost forgot to purchase the next calendar. Maybe I am in denial about it being almost 2018.

Pictured: Previous calendar, obviously!

Mothers and Daughters

Today worked out better than expected. Instead of just meeting my friend in Olympia, it was a mother-daughter shopping and coffee date. Works for us!

Safe Travels

My mom could have found a ride to SeaTac airport early yesterday morning. But opted to take a bus to Bremerton and then catch a ferry. Our daughter met her at the Seattle ferry terminal.

We are thankful for safe travels for my mom, all the way to California to see my sister and family.

It would have been hard for someone to return from Seattle yesterday with the train derailment in Dupont.

For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. Psalm 91:11 ESV

Never Too Old

You are never too old for Christmas decorations. It was fun to see my Gramma's home with a little tree, lights, and poinsettia. And special wooden ornaments handcrafted by my uncle.

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!" Luke 2:13-14 ESV

Simple Lights

I like the simple lights on the tree in our house. And in the front yard! Works for me.

For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 2 Corinthians 4:6 ESV

Anniversary Month Love

We had a special meal in honor of our anniversary today. It is our anniversary month, after all! It was our second visit to the Cooper Point Public House in Olympia. We know the burgers and fries are good. So today we tried the club sandwich and a skillet breakfast. Both excellent.

Enjoy life with the wife whom you love, all the days of your vain life that he has given you under the sun, because that is your portion in life and in your toil at which you toil under the sun. Ecclesiastes 9:9 ESV

Dogs on TV

Who let the dogs in? It was just the movie we were watching. Got our puppy's attention!

Now out of the ground the LORD God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. Genesis 2:19 ESV

Tea for Me

I am not a tea snob. But do I like a good cup of black tea. So I was excited to find a box of Yorkshire teabags for sale at our local bargain grocery store. Tea for me!

What is Revealed

It is interesting to see what is revealed. When the ornamental plum tree in our front yard loses its leaves, all is bared. I like the simple lines.

Reminds me of how God looks at the heart. Nothing is hidden.

But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart." 1 Samuel 16:7 ESV

Good Report

My friend Robin would have been happy that I followed through. She wanted all her friends and loved ones to get colonoscopies. It's a good thing to do. Even better to have it over with and with a good report!

Pictured: One of the few pictures I have of Robin. She was usually the one taking pictures.

He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the LORD has spoken. Isaiah 25:8 ESV

Photo Booth Love

It only took three tries. To get a picture that we both liked. Fun to have a self-service photo booth at Harbor Church last night!

Harbor Lights 2017

Our Life Group had a good representation at the Harbor Lights dinner tonight. We missed the two members who couldn't be with us.

December Breakfast Love

What's the best way to eat oatmeal? At the local Basement Bistro, loaded up with fruit and nuts. With your husband and mother-in-law. Or you can have eggs and bacon. Works for us!

Made it Every Week

I need to reflect on what I have learned over the past 15 weeks in Perspectives. I am glad I was able to attend every single week. Loved all the instructors! We are officially done, with some homework to finish up.

Pictured: A little memento from the class

Chasing Rainbows

We were chasing rainbows most of the way home on Sunday. They were beautiful! I'm also thankful we had clear skies on and off. Made the drive much easier.

Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD his God, who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, who keeps faith forever; Psalm 146:5-6 ESV

Time to Read and Study

Don't mind if I do. Thank you to the person who left today's newspaper on the table at McDonald's this morning. I can read it with my coffee. Then do Bible Study Fellowship and Perspectives homework.

Back from Africa

If your friends are visiting from Africa, then it's worth a drive to go see them. It was good to see my husband's college roommate and wife at the Eugene First Church of the Nazarene this weekend. Dave gave an update about their ministry in Malawi since moving there earlier this year.

Playground Days

It's been a while since our kids were on the monkey bars. Even longer since I gave it a try. But I feel like I am swinging from deadline to deadline. Barely making it from one to the next.

There are seasons like that. Time to pray and plan.

Pictured: Not exactly monkey bars. Just a swing in our former backyard.

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, Colossians 3:23 ESV

Get Ready for December

I couldn't figure out why the numbers seemed off. Because it's time to turn the calendar page!

Ready or not, and I'm not, December is here. I need to gather my thoughts and get ready.

Carpool Buddy

One of the highlights of my Perspectives Missions class is getting there. I am thankful for my carpool buddy. I drive to Sue's house and she drives to Olympia. She is a long-time friend and it's been good to catch up. Plus we can reflect and respond to the lesson on the way home.

Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 ESV

Filled with Love

Our Life Group knows how to work together and get things done. We sewed 48 Christmas stockings and contributed goodies to fill them. They are for a Christmas party at Evergreen State College next week.

Turkey Love

We have friends that are so generous. I can't even remember how many years they have been giving us a turkey and ham for Thanksgiving and Christmas. We are so loved!

Sew Smarter

I sewed a little smarter this time. I divided the fabric with a couple friends in our Life Group. We each did our part. Ready to fill with treats for college students at All God's People at Evergreen College!

Find the Balance

I am looking for balance in my life. I want to enjoy the moment. Be thankful for today. But also set goals and prepare for what comes next. Like Christmas.

More Thanksgiving

We don't have Thanksgiving dinner on only one certain day. We can stagger the dinners. Eat with my relatives one day. And have a meal with my husband's brother and wife another day. Three of our children, plus two, were able to join us today. Works for us.

Pictured: Some of the group today, after eating and playing cards.

Thanksgiving 2017

The best part of Thanksgiving this year? All the generations together. Eating, talking, laughing. The worst part of Thanksgiving? Missing the people who weren't there.

Pictured: Some of the people at my aunt and uncle's home, with my cousins, foster kids, grandma, a friend, my mom, and my niece.

Thankful for Rachel

If your birthday is close to Thanksgiving, you might get overlooked. But today we are thankful for Rachel. She has become very dear to our family.

Happy birthday, Rachel!

Day with Mom

If you have to get lab work done and see the doctor, you know what that means. It's time for a quick trip for coffee (or hot water, if you are watching caffeine) and lunch. Some day we will spend time together just for fun. But we can redeem the day. Works for Mom and me.

Pear Love

I wish I could paint. Or even just mix colors. I love the beauty of pears. They are almost too pretty to eat.

Happy Birthday, Nate!

I was a proud aunt 21 years ago. I still am. But now I see Nate as more of a friend than little kid. He is always willing to help drive, cook, clean up, or whatever needs to be done.

Happy 21st birthday!

I need more quiet time. To reflect, journal, and set goals. Prayerfully.

Fill Up the Screen

I like how I started. I wrote daily blog posts, short and sweet. With a Bible verse. With or without accompanying photo.

Eleven years later, I haven't missed many days. I am still learning and growing. Chipping away at getting organized. But I haven't given up.
