Family Team Meeting

We split up to take care of errands in Olympia. And met for coffee to regroup. Other family members are working on projects in Portland. The plans for this weekend's memorial service are coming together. Go team family.

Where to Start

I don't even know where to start processing the loss of my father-in-law. The family is off to a good start. We are sharing stories and memories. Laughing. Crying. Repeat.

Memorial Service for Arnold

The memorial service for my father-in-law will be this Saturday, September 3, 2016 at 1:30 PM in Olympia. It will be held at their church, Westwood Baptist Church at 333 Kaiser Road NW, Olympia, WA 98502.

I love how the family is coming together to make this happen in a way that honors him and celebrates his life and legacy.

Chance to Say Good-bye

My father-in-law ended up only being in the hospital twice in his lifetime. When he was born. And when he died. We all hoped he would come through gall bladder and open heart surgery. After seven weeks of a courageous battle to regain his health and strength, he took a turn for the worse. He went quickly on Friday, August 26th, 2016 at age 77.

Thankfully all five children had a chance to say good-bye. He ended his days on earth surrounded by his dear, sweet wife of 57 years, his children, and five of his grandchildren. They prayed, sang a hymn, and shared a precious time in those final moments. We can't imagine life without him, but trust God will carry us through. A memorial service is being planned for next weekend.

Bamboo Family Love

I stood in line behind a family with five young children. The mom probably thought I was going to say something like, "Are they all yours?" Or, "You have your hands full." I commented that they had a beautiful family. Her gift to her children was to give them each other.

Reminded me of my husband's family, with five siblings. Who are thankful they have each other.

Waffle Love Language

If the extended family is together for breakfast, you might as well make waffles. I love my overnight raised waffle recipe for times like this.

I even had whole milk for a splurge. I substitute oil for the butter and use one cup whole wheat flour. It's easy to mix up the night before and add eggs and soda in the morning. You can leave it out overnight or put it in the fridge. In a container big enough for it to expand.

Light dawns in the darkness for the upright; he is gracious, merciful, and righteous. It is well with the man who deals generously and lends; who conducts his affairs with justice. For the righteous will never be moved; he will be remembered forever. He is not afraid of bad news; his heart is firm, trusting in the LORD. Psalm 112:4-7 ESV

Through it All

There is no big party planned, but it's no less of a celebration. My parents have been married 54 years today. They have weathered educational endeavors, cross-cultural adjustments, relocations, and many health challenges. They have been partners and best friends through it all. Trusting Jesus day by day.

Happy 54th Anniversary Dad and Mom!

A Psalm. A Song for the Sabbath. It is good to give thanks to the LORD, to sing praises to your name, O Most High; to declare your steadfast love in the morning, and your faithfulness by night, Psalm 92:1-2 ESV

Only One Try

I don't say a word. I let my arms speak for themselves. But yesterday's lab technician had a nice touch. She got my blood in one try. Didn't even hurt. (Try Quest Diagnostics next to Starbucks on Cooper Point Road!) Today I found out my results were normal. That means my weekly shot medication is not adversely affecting my liver.

Praise the LORD! Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! Psalm 106:1 ESV

Puppy Family Love

I think our puppy was in the middle. Back when she was a smaller fluff ball. She's a keeper!

And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that creeps on the ground according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. Genesis 1:25 ESV

Ready to Go

We've come a long way since that first six-hour road trip home. Our puppy cried for the first hour and slept the rest of the way. Now she hops in the car and is ready to go.

"Two Lost Sons"

Last week we had a guest preacher from Resurrection Church in Tacoma.  Pastor Joel Brown shared a convicting sermon about the Prodigal Son. No matter how many times you have read the parable or heard sermons about it, there is still something to learn!

And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. Luke 15:20 ESV

Happy Birthday to our Daughter!

I will never forget the first time I saw those big brown eyes. Twenty-five years ago today. She started as the little sister to two brothers. Then became a big sister to our youngest. And my good friend.

Happy birthday to our daughter!

Tacoma Szechuan Love

Might as well enjoy the journey. Stop on the way home from the hospital. Try a new Chinese restaurant.

We liked the authentic Tacoma Szechuan. It's not that far off the highway.

He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler. Psalm 91:4 ESV

Long Unexpected Journey

My father-in-law has been in the hospital for almost six weeks. It's been a long, unexpected journey. With a ways to go. Hopefully he can move on to rehab soon. We continue to pray for healing and recovery from his heart attack and surgery!

Pictured: Encouraging notes from my mother-in-law and our daughter in the hospital room at Tacoma.

The righteous flourish like the palm tree and grow like a cedar in Lebanon. They are planted in the house of the LORD; they flourish in the courts of our God. They still bear fruit in old age; they are ever full of sap and green, to declare that the LORD is upright; he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him. Psalm 92:12-15 ESV

Dog Park Debut

Another first for our puppy. She made her off-leash dog park debut. First there was one dog friend. Then came more. Everyone seemed to get along. Daisy especially enjoyed meeting the other dog owners and the children that came up to the fence. We will visit again soon!

Whoever is righteous has regard for the life of his beast, but the mercy of the wicked is cruel. Proverbs 12:10 ESV

Blue Heron Love

We have a new meeting place before or after trips to the hospital. The Blue Heron Bakery in Olympia has something for everyone: coffee, sandwiches, pizza, breakfast items, baked goods, ice cream, and more. And treats for four-legged friends too. I bought some dog biscuits to bring home.

Gingerbread Fail

It seemed like a good idea at the time. But the upside-down gingerbread with zucchini was a complete fail. The texture was all wrong. The flavor was so-so. Live and learn.

Road Trip, One Year Ago

It was hot last summer. And wedding season. Tomorrow is the one-year anniversary of my husband's nephew and wife. That was a fun road trip to central Oregon!

Lake Puppy

Yesterday we took the pup to the lake to cool off. My husband met us after work. And I stopped by my parents' place for a quick visit.

Wish I could have done that today! It was too hot to leave the house with the puppy.

Sibling Coffee Meeting

We called another sibling coffee meeting. Before my husband went to work and his sister and brother went to visit my father-in-law in the hospital. The recovery from his heart attack and surgery has been slow going. With ups and downs along the way. We keep praying and trusting God for good results.

Nice Quiet Ride

Now you can't hear me coming. We had work done on our car. The creaks and squeals are gone. Amazing what new ball joints will do.

And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19 ESV

First Storyville

It's been three years since my first taste of Storyville Coffee. I wonder if I will ever tire of the rich aroma when I open the bag. Not likely.

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV

Laptop Troubleshooting

I started checking things off the list. Is the power supply faulty? Maybe I can find a replacement at a thrift store. But the guy at the thrift store tested my cord and it worked fine. He suggested I remove the laptop battery and plug in the power supply. And we are back on! Problem solved.

Oh give thanks to the LORD; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples! Psalm 105:1 ESV

First Park

We took our puppy to her first park. The birthday party group was just leaving, so we had the place to ourselves. Walker Park in Shelton has a play area and picnic area with a beach below. I'm not sure how the barnacled rocks felt on her paws. But it was fine for walking around.

Technical Difficulties

I can't blame the puppy for this one. My laptop appears to be dead. Won't turn on or take a charge. It worked fine yesterday. Might need professional help. But not tonight.

"Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. Matthew 6:34 ESV

Room for Improvement

I am having trouble keeping up with everything. This year's herb garden hasn't fared so well. I didn't keep up with the watering. But I can do better next year!

First 5 Buddy

I have a new Bible study plan. It's called First 5 and is an app and study guide. The idea is to start the day with five minutes in God's Word. We are studying the book of Romans right now. I have an online group, including some friends from church, doing it together. And a morning study buddy.

Pictured: Morning buddy. Right after I took this picture, she grabbed my study guide and ran away with it. But I rescued it before she chewed it up.

Now and Later

I need to find some recipes for meals that work for now and later. We are eating in split shifts these days. With people on different schedules. What makes for good leftovers? I can look through my cookbooks with that in mind.

Good to Go Puppy

Our puppy is good to go. Has all her shots and can freely go to dog parks and puppy training classes. Or even Canada. At four months old she weighs 30.5 pounds.

Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." Genesis 1:26 ESV

Glad He Asked

My father-in-law asked how his bamboo was growing. Which means he is getting back to his old self. After having heart surgery and being out of commission for some time now.  I wonder how much taller it will be when he gets out of the hospital.

Pictured: My father-in-law's impressive stand of bamboo in his backyard.

For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. Romans 1:19-20 ESV

Black and White

It was a good day for the puppies to meet. My brother-in-law and family have a 9-month-old border collie-lab puppy. We took them out to the lake and let them run and play in the water. They had fun and will sleep well tonight!

A Song of Ascents. Of David. Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity! Psalm 133:1 ESV
