College Students and Tofu Love

I offered to make rice in my mom's giant rice cooker. And a stir fry dish for the international student fellowship at Evergreen State College. I opted for my mom's Kung Pao Tofu and kept it vegetarian. A life group friend brought stir fry veggies with pork. I made a quadruple batch and 12 cups of rice. The college students and staff ate it all up!

Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. 1 Peter 4:9 ESV

Day to be Thankful

There is so much to be thankful for. We honor the memory of those who gave their all for our country.

Plus today is the birthday of my mother-in-law. Our family is blessed to have her in our lives!

Little Successes

I need reminders of little successes. Like the shelf of cookbooks. I reorganized and even pared the collection down. Now for the rest of the bookshelves. Little by little. I can do that.

Happy Birthday, Ed!

I wish there was a way to always celebrate birthdays in person. Like today, with my brother-in-law. Happy birthday to a great friend who happens to be married to my sister!

Make Way for Ducklings

Why did the ducklings cross the road? They were following their mother. And dodged traffic, thanks to some good Samaritans who stopped traffic in all directions. All's well, that ends well.

Pictured: You can see the ducklings in the center of the photo.

And God blessed them, saying, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth." Genesis 1:22 ESV

Meet and Greet

Our friends have a sweet dog. She likes to greet guests before going back outside. And watching through the sliding glass door.

When She Was Little

She doesn't have cute blue rain boots anymore. Or wear headbands. But she still has a sweet smile and beautiful golden hair. Eleven years later.

Life Group Prayers

We don't just talk about prayer. Even if that is the topic of the last sermon. We spend time praying as a group. And individually during the week. I love our Harbor Church life group!

"Pull the Trigger" with Prayer

Do we need another sermon on prayer? Absolutely. Thank you, Pastor Seth Winterhalter.

"Prayer is not a spiritual luxury."

A consistent prayer life:

  • teaches us absolute and utter dependence on God
  • weeds out our selfish desires
  • teaches perseverance
You can listen to the 28th sermon in the Colossians series online:

Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison—that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak. Colossians 4:2-4 ESV

Outside the Kitchen Door

I know what to expect for Mother's Day. I love my annual herb garden, potted with love. My husband added something new. Some veggie starts and seeds. The romaine and spinach will be fun to harvest. Right outside the kitchen door.

The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 2 Corinthians 9:6 ESV

Perfect Timing

Guess who stopped by the guitar recital? On her way to a soccer game in Seattle. Just in time for little sister's song. Perfect timing.

Ready to Enroll

Our daughter is almost in community college. She worked hard to complete testing this week. And met with an adviser today. She is all set to select classes and enroll for the fall. So proud of her!

Something to Smile About

Our daughter faithfully followed her orthodontist's instructions. With good results.

Baby Sister Love

I wish I could get in the car and drive south. Go see my baby sister. Who will always be my baby sister, no matter how old she gets. And wish her a happy birthday in person!

Love you, Sis!

And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. Colossians 3:14 ESV

Moments of Beauty

First one rose, now a beautiful bouquet. You have to enjoy the peonies while they last. The buds open, only to flop over quickly.

Kind of like parenting. (Not the flop part, hopefully.) Before you know it, you've gone from one season to the next. Savor the moments of beauty and wonder.

Sermon #27: Bossy Pants

Another great sermon on Sunday. With explanation of the context of the passage in Colossians 3:22-4:1. A call to steward what God blesses you with. Lots of scriptures. With encouragement to pour out your life in whatever role God has given you. As you "take off your bossy pants." Listen online:

Bondservants, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, not by way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord. Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. Colossians 3:22-24 ESV

Yellow Rose Love

Another day, another rose. Today's rose is a beautiful yellow one from our yard. With a sweet fragrance. Thanks to my thoughtful husband.

Rhody Love

Is this the year of the rhododendron? I don't remember seeing so many in so many brilliant colors. I love God's palette!

Wishing Well Love

We keep taking things from my in-laws' yard. The latest transplant is a wishing well. My husband found a great spot for it. And added flowers. I love it!

Sweet Day

I'm still thinking about this Mother's Day. And slowly enjoying my chocolate. (A whole Theo bar from Harbor Church and an assortment of Fran's Chocolate from my daughter and her friend.)

Mother's Day at Harbor Church

I love our church family. Harbor Church has solid Bible teaching, wonderful music, and people from various backgrounds. All coming together to make much of Jesus.

Pictured: You might recognize some in this picture from the Harbor Church Facebook page.

If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me. If I say, "Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night," even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you. Psalm 139:9-12 ESV

End of Revelation and BSF

I am still processing my takeaways from this year's study. I have a bigger view of God and Jesus. And a clearer picture of God's justice and mercy. I didn't know there was so much grace in Revelation!

I can't wait to study the book of John, starting September 12, 2016 in Olympia.

Bible Study Fellowship has a prayer guide to prepare for the study of John.

Pictured: Last night of Olympia Bible Study Fellowship women's class on Monday nights.

and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.  He who testifies to these things says, "Surely I am coming soon." Amen. Come, Lord Jesus! The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. Amen. Revelation 22:19-21 ESV

Staggered Arrivals

We had staggered arrival times at the park yesterday. Which actually worked out fine. Our younger son got to spend some time with his little sister.

Mother's Day Picnic 2016

We picked a central-ish location to meet. All four children plus one. We visited a park not far from the freeway in Tacoma. After a delicious lunch, with contributions from all, we walked around the lake. Just 9/10 of a mile. I would come again. Or try a new park. Could be our new Mother's Day Picnic tradition. Works for me!

Pictured: Love my two daughters! Have to get a picture with my two sons another time.

My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them. Psalm 139:15-16 ESV

Keep Track

One of the reasons I write a daily blog is to keep track of the days and years. Was it last year that we went to Seattle on Mother's Day? Yes, it was. Good memories.

Take Water

Note to self: always grab a filled water bottle on the way out the door. Especially since the days are getting warmer. Add slices of lemon or cucumber, if available.

Which reminds of a picture from Revelation:

They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes." Revelation 7:16-17 ESV

Guacamole Love

That worked out well. Last time our family ate at Chipotle, I bought a $25 gift card for us to use. With their special deal, my daughter and I were able to show that receipt and get a bowl for free. Including a side of guacamole. I don't always get guacamole, so that was a treat! Works for me!

Note: This is a limited time promotion, and you have to buy the gift card from Chipotle. And redeem the offer before June 30, 2016.

Happy Maple

My husband was happy to dig up a tree. Where it wasn't thriving at his dad's place. And replant it outside our dining room window. I think the new maple will do well here.

Rose in May

My husband knows I love flowers. But not to spend too much money buying them. So a rose from our yard is perfect! Works for us!

Parents and Children

Continuing right along in Colossians. You might think the section on parenting would apply only to parents. Or children. But I think everyone could learn, be encouraged, and challenged in Sunday's sermon by Pastor Seth Winterhalter.

Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged. Colossians 3:20-21 ESV

Almost to the End

I can't believe we are near the end of Revelation. Tomorrow is the last lecture for the Olympia women's Bible Study Fellowship. The last meeting time is the following Monday, where individuals will share about what God has taught them this year. I plan to go over my notes and reread Revelation this summer.

And he said to me, "These words are trustworthy and true. And the Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, has sent his angel to show his servants what must soon take place." "And behold, I am coming soon. Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book." Revelation 22:6-7 ESV
