Pumpkin Memories

We used to go to the pumpkin patch every year. With my daughter's class. Back when we went on field trips. Caravanned. I miss those kids and parents!

The Martian

I didn't jump out of my seat or yell. Too much. I did cover my eyes for one surgery scene early in the movie. I really liked the The Martian movie, starring Matt Damon. Minus a little bit of language.

I loved the problem-solving. Determination. Perseverance. Not giving up. Team-work.

And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness to have the full assurance of hope until the end, Hebrews 6:11 ESV

Late Start

They are holding on for dear life. If you look carefully, you can see the green tomatoes. They might just ripen before the frost. Not bad for a volunteer tomato plant that got a late start.

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:5 ESV

Encouraged and Challenged

I expected to learn about End Times. But so far, I am learning more about who Jesus is. What He said to the churches. And to me. I have been encouraged and challenged!

Any Shelton or Olympia women who want to join me on Monday nights? Would love to study the book of Revelation at Bible Study Fellowship with you! Or you can find a class near you, on six continents and in 39 nations! With classes for men, women, young adults, and children.

"'I know your works. Behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut. I know that you have but little power, and yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. Revelation 3:8 ESV

With a Heart

I found the perfect ending. For my husband's birthday bead bookmark. I included a map of Africa with a heart. And some of the wooden beads he brought back.

Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him? James 2:5 ESV

Start Dinner Early

I started the pizza dough early. Before I left the house this morning. Took sauce out of the freezer. When I got home, all I had to do was cut up veggies, roll out pizza dough, and dinner was good to go.

Fast Weekend

The weekends go too fast. When our older daughter comes home. But at least she is only an hour and a half away.

Happy 55th!

How did he celebrate his birthday? With a quiet day at home with the family. Dug a hole in the front yard to look for the septic tank. Without complaint. Topped off with dessert at his parents.

Happy 55th birthday to my hard-working husband!

Back in the Valley

It's been a while since I read some Puritan prayers. How did they communicate such deep, worshipful thoughts? I like the word picture in the prayer about penitence:

"My soul is often a chariot without wheels,
clogged and hindered in sin's miry clay;
Mount it on eagle's wings
and cause it to soar upward to thyself."

from The Valley of Vision: Puritan Prayers and Devotions

but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:31 ESV

Go Hawks!

I am not the fan my husband is. Or half the fan my mom is. But I can enjoy a good game of football. Plus dinner with the in-laws. And wear my husband's hat. If he is gone for the night and misses the game.

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, Colossians 3:23 ESV

Tears and Prayers

I don't know when I have cried so much. Cutting onions. That onion really got to me! Since when have sweet onions been so strong? My friend is sensitive to cutting onions so I think of her and pray for her every time I cut an onion.

I thank my God always when I remember you in my prayers, Philemon 1:4 ESV

Take a Class

Did you know you can take classes for free? Through the local library system. Check out what your library has to offer. I signed up for The Keys to Effective Editing. Wish I would have taken it before I helped my kids with high school papers. I might try my hand at an Excel class next.

Rainbow to Follow

The rain started up this afternoon. Perfect for giving us a rainbow to follow. All the way home.

Crab Pot Family

Back in the day, when I visited my sister at the University of Washington, we took the bus to downtown Seattle. Dined on salmon at the waterfront. Then it was a date location for my husband I. Followed by family outings. Too bad my sister and family couldn't join us yesterday. So many good memories of the Crab Pot Seattle.

Roasting Studio and More

It wasn't just all four kids (plus one) together. It was a day with my in-laws, my brother-in-law, his wife, and their son. We met on Bainbridge Island and went to my daughter's workplace: Storyville Roasting Studio. Coffee, amazing homemade tomato soup, breakfast sandwiches, and don't forget the chocolate chunk cookies. Then we walked on the ferry and went to the Seattle waterfront. Good day with the family for an early birthday celebration for my husband!

Courage for a Better Story

I remember when my friend was a little girl, enjoying backyard picnics  with my children. Now she is a wife and mom. And inspiring writer. I read her blog and think about her words long after my screen is dark. You can find Courage for a Better Story here:

Four Big Sisters

I was able to congratulate the four big sisters in person. They are staying with my cousins for a couple days. I gave them some books and clothes to take home to their baby sister. Including a little shirt that says, "My auntie rocks." I don't know if I rock, but I love, love, love, all of them.

Pictured: My husband took this photo before he went to work, next door to my cousins' home.

Note to Self

Note to self: always lock the car door. When you are sitting in the grocery store parking lot gathering your thoughts and coupons. Some random person might open your door and startle you. Or a friend who is just saying hi.

The simple believes everything, but the prudent gives thought to his steps. Proverbs 14:15 ESV

No Paintbrush Required

I love this time of year in our part of the world. God is an amazing artist. No paintbrush required.

It's a Girl!

I have a new little niece to love. My sister and family welcomed a baby girl this afternoon. She will never be bored with four big sisters to love on her. Mom and baby are doing well. I don't have a picture of my own to share. Yet. Can't wait to meet her!

Mini-Sermon on Prayer

I appreciate how Pastor Seth Winterhalter packs a lot in his sermons. Today's message was a two-for-one. The first part was a short message on three ways to pray. We should pray often, pray thankful, and pray specific.

We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, Colossians 1:3 ESV

Former Lives

Sometimes I think about the former lives. Items that have been repurposed around here. Like the shelf  holding the microwave, appliances, and bowls. It used to be in our garage (when we had one) holding tools. Or the little bookshelf in the kitchen filled with cookbooks. My husband built that for me as a bedside shelf. And of course, there's my favorite makeover:  the kitchen island. The frame used to be my daughter's bunk bed.

Little Volunteer

Hang in there, little volunteer tomato plant! I'm not sure if you are going to make it through fall. You will get plenty of water. But I'm not sure about sun. We will see if you bear fruit. Reminds me of the tomato plant from my fellow juror last year.

Faithful Companion

I'm glad our golden retriever is hanging in there, even though he is getting up there in years. Hard to believe our youngest was in kindergarten when we adopted him.

Still Waiting

I am still waiting. Not as anxiously as my sister and family is. One of these days I am going to have a new niece or nephew. Can't wait to meet him or her!

Chicken Roll-ups

I like to play a game called, "What can I do with what I have?" The other night I started with garlic-seasoned chicken. Pounded it flat and rolled it up with peeled mozzarella cheese sticks, prosciutto ham, and opened a jar of sun-roasted tomatoes for a good measure. Squeezed some lemon (left over from another meal) and added a splash of olive oil. Seasoned with salt, pepper, and rosemary. Sealed each section of chicken in a foil packet and baked for 20 minutes. Voila! Tender and tasty. I will have to try that again.

Inspired by a Mark Bittman recipe:

Looked Like Pumpkin

Our favorite bagel shop had samples of the bagel of the week. Looked like pumpkin bagel to me. But no, it was sriracha bagel. No cinnamon or nutmeg spice. Just heat! So I bought one to take to my sriracha-loving son.

But he answered, "It is written, "'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"Matthew 4:4 ESV

A New Identity

Pastor Seth was right. I am guilty of skimming right through the letter introductions. They are so familiar, grace and peace to you, et cetera. But there is much to learn if we slow down. Take each word. Define it. I recommend today's sermon, number four in the Colossians series. You can listen to the audio online.

Birthday Breakfast

Back in the day we used to go to breakfast almost every Saturday. With my in-laws. When we had one in the high chair, the waitress spread newspaper underneath the chair for some reason. This morning we had a belated birthday breakfast for our two. No high chairs or newspapers required.

Artist at Work

I don't want to disturb an artist at work. As long as she stays outside. So I do the limbo when I walk through the carport. It is amazing how hard she works to spin her web and repair the wind damage.

Cook with Love

I have been looking for a new cast iron casserole. Not too big, not too small. For the right price. What color would I choose? No worries. My mother-in-law found a great sale. One for me and one for her. Love my new beautiful blue cookware!
