No Regrets

I was so lovesick on the drive across the country that my parents put me on plane in Michigan. When I got back to Oregon my boyfriend didn't need a choreographed photographer-in-the-wings event. He simply asked if I would marry him. Thirty years ago today. I have never regretted saying yes.

Plum Happy

What do you do when your neighbors share their bumper crop of yellow plums? Bake a blueberry plum crisp for starters. Borrow a dehydrator and get drying. Works for us!

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:5 ESV

All Together, Two Years Ago

I would love to recreate a photo of all the grandkids together. See how they've grown! And in October there will be one more! Will my sister have a fifth girl or will they have a little brother? We are all ready to love the new little one.

Good Transition

We were getting set to post an ad for our rental house. And praying for a good transition. Our renters are preparing to move out and we need new renters in a month.  But God provided the perfect family. Friends of ours. Works for all of us.

And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Colossians 3:15 ESV

Happy to Attend

My girlfriend knew I would be totally down for her event. She had a friend with no one planning a baby shower for her. Until my friend stepped up. I didn't know her friend, but I was happy to attend. Our Life Group contributed newborn diapers and cash for the cloth diaper fund. And of course I took some children's books!

Contend for the Faith

It's exciting to start a new sermon series at Harbor Church. Kicked off with Pastor John in the pulpit. Solid teaching from the book of Jude.

Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints. Jude 1:3 ESV

Life-Changing Tidying Up

I joke that I need a book about how to organize my organizing books. But I have a new favorite: The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing by Marie Kondo.

I liked her stories and thorough research. Her "does it spark joy?" approach helped me get serious about decluttering. For real. Just so you know, she writes from a Japanese perspective with an anthropomorphic spin.

Family Quote

My youngest wanted nothing to do with their props and antics. But the husband-wife photographer team kept trying to get a smile. Finally the wife told her husband: "You're pushing it, Carl." We still quote her, thirteen years later. In other words, quit while you're still ahead.

Happy Home

I remember how happy they were to have their own home again. After being on the road and living in a motor home. My in-laws have been a good team. Celebrating 56 years of marriage tomorrow!

Happy Anniversary, a day early!

Birthday Pie

He doesn't draw attention to himself. My father-in-law quietly leads a life of example. Loves his wife and family well. Is always willing to lend a hand to friends or neighbors. I've been blessed to know him for over thirty years now.

Happy 76th birthday!

Garden Basket Love

I took my basket filled with books and things for my little friends down the road. My friend sent me home with my basket filled with bounty from her garden. Inspiration for dinner! Works for me!

New Hutch Love

I never know what my husband will do when I am out of the house. Or how he will rearrange things. He found a new hutch for his desk at the Habitat ReStore. Fits perfectly. And now I have his former hutch on my desk. I love his inspirations!

Unplanned Meetings

If I had left 30 seconds earlier, I would have completely missed them. Amazing how often my path crosses with my parents. I love those unplanned family meetings.

Beautiful and Practical

I love it when beautiful meets practical. Like my new basket. Perfect for carrying things. Or organizing. Another happy birthday present to me! From my Life Group friends.

Celebrate and Be Thankful

I asked a friend if his recent birthday ended in zero or five. On further reflection, I'm not sure why that matters. Every birthday is something to celebrate! And be thankful for. I'm glad his wife threw him a surprise party. Without a zero or five involved.

Matchy Matchy

I recall a long wait at the photo studio. It was hard to juggle nap time and meals and keep it together. But I am glad I have a portrait from when our sons were little. Twenty-five years ago.

Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. So you will find favor and good success in the sight of God and man. Proverbs 3:3-4 ESV

Tea on Deck

It's been a while since my Gramma and I had tea together. We had a nice visit on the deck. With a great view of the wedding shower going on below.

His and Hers

I wanted to do something special for my cousin who is all grown up and getting married. I noticed something missing from their registry. Nothing for his and her golden retrievers. So I bought some tennis balls for dogs, with appropriate colors for each. With a gift card to Home Depot for them. They will have plenty of projects after they get married and move in to a new home!

Wedding Shower Shower

That's what you call a wedding shower shower. Dark clouds rolled in and the rain came down. Quick, put towels on the seats and cover the wedding gifts.

Guests took cover under the deck until the skies cleared. And it ended up being a lovely barbecue and wedding shower on the lawn by the lake.

God Creates Marriage

The sermons in this Genesis series keep building on each other. What is God's perfect design for men and women?

Today Pastor Seth Winterhalter preached about marriage. With applications for all of us, married or single. You can catch them all online. I recommend them.

Plus One

I still think about my two girlfriends who didn't make it to 50. Although I don't imagine I am seeing them around town as much any more. I am continually grateful for the time God has given me. And it is a bonus that my health seems stable right now.

Lots of Birthday Greetings

This birthday doesn't end in zero. Or include 100 people in my backyard. I enjoyed a quiet day with family. Had an amazing dinner prepared by my mother-in-law. With lots of birthday greetings from friends and family around the world. I feel loved and remembered! Works for me!

Little Bit Of Color

I am thankful for the little bit of color in our yard. The roses are handling this dry heat. Thankfully the weather is supposed to be cooler soon. And we might see rain next week.

Check the Balances

I took a break from cleaning my room. And checked the balances on some gift cards on my desk. Looks like I can get some coffee and ice cream. Plus $5 worth of groceries. I wrote the balances on the back so I will know what I have.

Good Sport

My husband is such a good sport. He will slow down and stop the car. So I can take a picture of my friend's big pig.

"A Path Through Suffering"

My dad and I brought coordinating books for the waiting room the other day. He is reading the late Elisabeth Elliot's These Strange Ashes: Is God Still in Charge?

I am reading her book, A Path Through Suffering: Discovering the Relationship Between God's Mercy and Our Pain. I highly recommend it. She writes:

"Whatever today's test may be, through accident, physical disability, our own mistakes or failures or disobedience, perhaps the hostility of others, He is able to help us meet our test. He was made like us. He had to be, in order to die. He had to die in order to break death's power. His was a surrender, not to a fate He could not avoid, but to His Father. When we open our lives to the will of the Father, we enter into that same mystery."

Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life. Revelation 2:10 ESV

One Service

Our church will only have one service on Sundays. Just for the summer. Harbor Church in Olympia meets at 10 AM on Sundays. Starting today. The building is air conditioned and the coffee is good. With great teaching out the of Bible. Works for me.

Three on the Fourth

I'm glad our three kids are together for the 4th of July. We drove north to meet our older daughter and son, and left without our youngest. We can stay home tonight and keep the dog company.

Unwavering Love

Today would have been my grandparents' 74th wedding anniversary. The last time I saw my Grampa he was in his hospice bed, with my Gramma at his side. They were a strong team and weathered many storms. I never saw their love waver or devotion fade.

Picture credit: My son took this photo of my grandparents, at my Grampa's memorial service.

Where is the Dog?

Can you find our dog in this picture? My husband moved some flowers and a potted tree to the shade. And when he took a photo, our dog photobombed the scene.

But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God. I trust in the steadfast love of God forever and ever. Psalm 52:8 ESV

Mom's New Splint

It was a day for seeing doctors. My mom's hernia surgery is healing well. But the hand doctor isn't sure if she needs surgery. My mom needs to get a 3-D cat scan to find out. She has a new splint in the meantime.

do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. Philippians 4:6 ESV
