Backyard Birthday Party

It was a team effort. My younger daughter decorated the tables and trees. After housework inside. My older daughter baked cakes. My sisters-in-law pitched in with set-up and brought food. My father-in-law supplied the burgers. My husband manned the charcoal grill to perfection. My son and his girlfriend brought food and helped with set-up and clean-up. My mom brought her delicious cabbage and three-bean salads. Even the Birthday Girl made her trademark potato salad. My friend gave me a beautiful drink dispenser. For this party and parties to come. And can you believe we fit 8 borrowed folding chairs in our Corolla trunk? That's how a backyard birthday party comes together.

Surprise: Happy 75th!

We successfully pulled off the surprise birthday party. Perfect for honoring my mother-in-law on her 75th birthday. My brother-in-law, his wife, their son, and my sister-in-law represented the Portland relatives. Plus my son and his girlfriend came from Bellingham, and my daughter from Seattle. And always nice to have my parents join us.

Happy birthday, Linda!

Knit Together

It was a good day to see old friends and new friends. I stopped by for a quick visit at two friends' homes. Fun to catch up with my former Bible study cohorts.

Then tonight we had dinner with several families from church.

Countless

How many trips to Seattle? How many good meals together? From here to Pasadena. Countless. So many good memories of time with my brother-in-law and family.

Happy Birthday, Ed!

Good with Tea or Coffee

I used to have a reputation. For making muffins. Good with tea or coffee. Maybe I should try some new recipes. Or bring back the old stand-bys.

Prayer: Experiencing Awe and Intimacy with God

Our Life Group studies the Bible, prays, and shares life together. Now we are all going to read Tim Keller's book about prayer. Thanks to the generosity of one couple in our group.

Memorial Day 2015

Today is a good day to remember, reflect, and appreciate the sacrifices made. And I pray for the safety of those still serving today.

Chapter and Verse

If you take notes, be prepared for the Bible references to come flying when Pastor Seth Winterhalter preaches. Here's a tip that helps me: write down the chapter and verse (before you forget it) and then the book of the Bible. Or you can listen to the recorded sermons online.

I love the solid Bible teaching we get at Harbor Church Olympia!

Passed Inspection

Looks like someone got a new car. Perfect for driving home for the weekend.

Happy Marriage

We have a happy marriage. My husband loves to work in the yard. And I love fresh herbs. He restocked my herb garden for Mother's Day. With a beautiful hanging basket of flowers. Works for me!

Rock Star

I don't know how my husband does it. He comes home after working all day, and still has something left to give. He stepped up to make a delicious dinner for us tonight. I love how he takes good care of us.

Good Memories

I think I will always call it, "my grandparents' place." Plural. Even if my Grampa is in heaven now. I have so many good memories of my time with my grandparents at the lake. First as a child, as a college student, as a newlywed, and then as a mom with my own children.

After Moses

I need to start somewhere. So I will pick up where the study of Moses left off. I am reading Joshua. Another great leader who put his trust in God.

For the LORD your God dried up the waters of the Jordan for you until you passed over, as the LORD your God did to the Red Sea, which he dried up for us until we passed over, so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the LORD is mighty, that you may fear the LORD your God forever." Joshua 4:23-24 ESV

Her Day

This is the day that the Pacific Northwest remembers Mount St. Helens blowing its top. Including me, since I was living in Portland at the time.

But today I am thankful for my sister, who will always be my baby sister. No matter how old we are, or how many children we have.  Love you, Sis!

What a Friend We Have in Jesus

My Grampa loved hymns, including, "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." We sang it at the memorial service, as captured by my son's photo.

Pictured: My cousin led the singing, with my parents in front of the hymnbook, and my Gramma seated on the right.

Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. Isaiah 53:4-5 ESV

This is the Year

Is this the Year of the Rhodies? As in, rhododendrons? I don't remember seeing so many beautiful blooms in our area. Maybe I just didn't notice.

Likewise, this could be the Year of God's Blessing. If I pay attention. And make sure to stop and thank Him for His gracious care.

And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. 2 Corinthians 9:8 ESV

Need a Plan

I don't have a plan for the summer yet. While on break from Bible Study Fellowship. But I will start by reading through last year's notes and my notebook.

You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. Deuteronomy 6:5-6 ESV

Golden with Some Silver

Nothing like a hair-cut and pedicure to put a spring in your step. Our ten-year-old golden retriever is ready for summer.

Now out of the ground the LORD God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. Genesis 2:19 ESV

Ready, Blink

I had trouble thirty years ago. My eyes were closed in many of our wedding pictures. And we didn't know until we got the prints back. At least now we can check and retake. Maybe I should wear shades for pictures and it won't matter.

Good-bye Sister

I dropped my daughter off at school and kept going north. The timing worked out to give my sister and niece a ride to the airport. I'm glad the rain let up and the traffic wasn't too heavy on the way back.

I miss them already.

Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. 1 Peter 3:8 ESV

Three Sisters Together

Our time together was short, but sweet. Glad we could be together for our grandfather's memorial service this weekend. It's always good to spend time with my sisters.

Pictured: My cousin from Texas took this picture  of my two younger sisters and me.

But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. Therefore encourage one another with these words. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 ESV

All About Jesus

My sister said it well: Our Grampa's memorial service yesterday was one of the best we have attended. God was glorified, Grampa was not. Each sibling spoke about Grampa, but pointed you to Jesus. It is exactly what Grampa would have wanted.

Pictured: My mom worked hard to share who Grampa was and what he stood for. She put together the beautiful pictorial program and had a segment during the service. Happy Mother's Day to my Mom!

Graveside Service

It was a beautiful morning to visit the cemetery with immediate family. My uncle gave a short message and we sang a hymn. The start of a great day remembering my Grampa while keeping our focus heavenward.

The memorial service is tomorrow morning.

New to the Coop

We have new residents. We traded in three old chickens that were barely laying enough to earn their keep. And our friend gave us four chickens that are already laying. They are beautiful, friendly, and each producing about an egg a day. Works for us.

Sharing Day and Fellowship

Women told some powerful stories today. It was a God-honoring sharing day in Bible Study Fellowship.

I am sad to have the year end, but know God will bring a new group of ladies for me to know and love in next year's discussion group.

Grampa's Memorial Service Planned

My Grampa's memorial service will be a celebration of life and God's faithfulness. The time is set for Saturday, May 9 at 11 AM at First Baptist Church in downtown Shelton. Refreshments to follow.

May Day Love

"Flowers are for May Day and remembering the ones we loved." My mother-in-law brought me May flowers and a card. She has been thoughtful like that since I married into the family, almost 30 years ago.

Finally, brothers, rejoice. Aim for restoration, comfort one another, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you. 2 Corinthians 13:11 ESV
