Final Good-bye

No one thought my Grampa would hang on this long. But in the almost two weeks since his stroke, all four children have gathered around him. Several grandchildren have been with him, including ones with medical training. There have been precious times of singing hymns, praying, and saying good-bye.

Tonight there was a final good-bye. Until we meet again in heaven.

Leaning on the Everlasting Arms

I read it in Deuteronomy 33 this week. Sang the hymn this morning at Bible Study Fellowship. I am trusting that my grandfather will be carried to heaven on everlasting arms. Any day now.

And the rest of the family will have God's comfort.

"There is none like God, O Jeshurun, who rides through the heavens to your help, through the skies in his majesty. The eternal God is your dwelling place, and underneath are the everlasting arms. And he thrust out the enemy before you and said, 'Destroy.' Deuteronomy 33:26-27 ESV

Ready for a Better Country

It is fitting that I come to the end of the study of Moses now. Today I read Deuteronomy 34, where Moses died on the mountain. I have seen my grandfather fight the good fight and come to his last days and moments. I am thankful that God keeps His promises and has prepared a place for us. My beloved Grampa will be there soon.

But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city. Hebrews 11:16 ESV

Follow the Leader

One of the last things my husband did in Africa was visit a wildlife preserve. I am glad he had the chance to take some photos of the majestic elephants.

O LORD, how manifold are your works! In wisdom have you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. Psalm 104:24 ESV

Full Day

My friend from church had a baby girl this morning. My sister has a birthday today. (Love you, Kath!) And my grandfather is close to the end of his life. Full day.

So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90:12 ESV

By His Side

My grandparents have always been a strong team. Working side by side. In the house and on the property. Even going overseas for a year to Taiwan.

Now my grandmother sits by his bedside. Joining the family in providing comfort as my Grampa comes to the end of his days on earth.

Pictured: My grandparents walking home from my parents' house at the lake, in 2011.

Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, and for as many years as we have seen evil. Let your work be shown to your servants, and your glorious power to their children. Psalm 90:15-16 ESV

Last Days at the Lake

It is fitting that my grandfather will spend his last days at the lake. Where so many memories have been made. Surrounded by family. Blessed to have all four children in town.

Pictured: A family dinner in 2010, with my parents, grandparents, in-laws, and my sister's family. One of many good times at Spencer Lake.

Gradual Good-bye

It has been a gradual good-bye. For almost six years since my Grampa had a major stroke. Last week's stroke means we will be saying a final good-bye soon.

I am thankful he is home from the hospital and is surrounded by family. He is ready to go home and meet his Savior.

Happy to Share

I don't know who all got the clothes, shoes, and toys my husband took to Africa. But he was happy to share with the property caretakers' children.

And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.' Matthew 25:40 ESV

Life Group Tonight

I appreciate how my husband leads our small group Bible study, known as "Life Group." I love listening to him read scripture and pray.

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, "For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered." No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:35-39 ESV

God's Comfort

It was true for Moses. And his successor Joshua. And us. God will never leave or forsake us.

Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the LORD your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you." Deuteronomy 31:6 ESV

Treasure God's Word

It's back to basics at church. How did we get the Bible and can we trust the Bible? I appreciate how Pastor Seth Winterhalter teaches the truth so passionately.

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 ESV

Morning Person

I never thought I'd consider myself a morning person. But I love spring mornings when it's not too hot. And the orchard trees are exploding in blossoms.

No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. John 15:15-16 ESV

Just Enough

All I want is just enough. Not too much. Not too little. Been thinking about one of my favorite sections in Proverbs.

Pictured: I love this picture my daughter took, looking up into a tree.

Remove far from me falsehood and lying; give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is needful for me, lest I be full and deny you and say, "Who is the LORD?" or lest I be poor and steal and profane the name of my God. Proverbs 30:8-9 ESV

Two Weeks Ago

It seems like a long time ago. And just yesterday. So glad he came back safely! Two weeks ago today.

For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. Psalm 91:11 ESV

Frisbee Gang

I knew my husband would get along well with children in Africa. Even if they didn't speak the same language. He spent about an hour playing frisbee games with a group of boys.

with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, Ephesians 4:2 ESV

Year of the Blossoms

Is this the Year of the Blossoms? There is amazing beauty all around us in the Pacific Northwest.

Pictured: In Seattle last weekend.

But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' Matthew 6:30-31 ESV

Happy to Paint

My husband can't get away from painting. Not that he minds. He was happy to help with painting and fixing screens at the missionaries' home in Malawi.

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, Colossians 3:23 ESV

To Be the Church

I am excited for a new sermon series at church. About church. Pastor Seth Winterhalter kicked off the first sermon in the "To Be the Church" series. We know what to expect from Pastor Seth. Lots of scripture. Truth about the gospel. And a lot of passion.

Basket Love

I didn't care if my husband brought me anything back from Africa. All I wanted was him to come home safely. But if he had a chance, could he bring me a basket? Carry it on the plane as a purse. Or on his head as a hat, if necessary. He asked a new friend, and his friend commissioned someone to make a basket for me.

And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. Colossians 3:14 ESV

Share God's Word

My husband left all his pants in Africa. Except for the pair he wore home. He donated them to people in need. And his favorite leather-bound Bible. A young man working in the cafe asked if my husband had an English Bible available. My husband was happy to share God's Word, and we can replace it.

Pictured: My husband's new friend in the cafe, near where they stayed in Mozambique.

But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him?Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. 1 John 3:17-18 ESV

Neighbor Friends

We didn't just build our homes in the sweat-equity self-help program. We became friends and neighbors. Shared our lives and raised our children together.

Nice to have a visit from our former next-door neighbor and her youngest daughter. Who is all grown up and in the Navy.

Do not forsake your friend and your father's friend, and do not go to your brother's house in the day of your calamity. Better is a neighbor who is near than a brother who is far away. Proverbs 27:10 ESV

Precious Birthday

Every year the birthdays get more precious. I am thankful my mom is doing well. She has fully recovered from her melanoma surgery and skin graft. Just in time to work in the garden. And celebrate her birthday!

Love you, Mom!

She considers a field and buys it; with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard. She dresses herself with strength and makes her arms strong. Proverbs 31:16-17 ESV

Preview of Heaven

I think my husband got a preview of heaven. And what it will be like to have every nation and tribe worshipping Jesus together.

Pictured: Attending church in Mozambique.

After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, "Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!" Revelation 7:9-10 ESV

Nice to Return

My husband had his first day back at work. After three weeks away. He left a note on the counter. Nice to return to our old routine.

And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. Ephesians 5:2 ESV

Death to Life

Glad we could have most of our family together. And attend Easter service at Harbor Church in Olympia. I appreciate how Pastor Seth Winterhalter speaks to long-time Christians and also explains things for first-time church goers.

He is risen!
He is risen, indeed!

Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. John 5:24 ESV

Happy Easter Dinner

It was a welcome home dinner. Just in time for Easter. With my husband, just back from Africa, and our son and his girlfriend, and our older daughter in town. Plus the grandparents. Happy Early Easter to us!

He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, Luke 24:6 ESV

Surrounded by Children

I wish I could have seen my husband surrounded by children. I'm sure they loved his gentle spirit, whether they spoke the same language or not. He finds children to be the same wherever you go. They love candy, competing, and attention. And posing for pictures.

But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, "Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. March 10:14 ESV

Spring in Our Backyard

I don't mind taking care of the chickens while my husband is gone. I can enjoy the beautiful blossoms as I walk through the yard.

Pictured: The cherry tree is first to blossom. The apple trees aren't far behind.

He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. Psalm 1:3 ESV
