Bonus Time

We had a bonus day with our older daughter. Instead of taking her home yesterday, we went today after church. Good thing we had hats in the car. It's chilly out there!

But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. Galatians 3:25-26 ESV

Meet for Dinner

If you need to find a place to meet, might as well pick a restaurant. Use your birthday gift card you've been saving. Have a nice dinner with your son and his girlfriend before they head north. Works for us. Just avoid the crazy drivers in the mall parking lot!

Better is a dinner of herbs where love is than a fattened ox and hatred with it. Proverbs 15:17 ESV

Our Three

We interrupt this coffee date with the grandparents. At our favorite meeting place. To capture a photo of our three children together. Good times.

As a father shows compassion to his children, so the LORD shows compassion to those who fear him. Psalm 103:13 ESV

Give Thanks Around the Table

It was easy to fit seven around the table. Two in-laws, three children, my husband, and I. But we would have gladly made room for more. We missed having our oldest with us. And our son's girlfriend.

It is good to pause regular life. Take time to reflect on God's many blessings.

Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's. Psalm 103:1-5 ESV

Young Singers

I'm always glad to have Bible Study Fellowship right before a big holiday. Sets the tone. And today we had an extra treat. The babies and little ones joined us for a short corporate worship time.

And he gave to Moses, when he had finished speaking with him on Mount Sinai, the two tablets of the testimony, tablets of stone, written with the finger of God. Exodus 31:18 ESV

Smooth Sailing

You never know what you will get with holiday traffic. We avoided all that by holding an early Thanksgiving dinner with my husband's family. Our drive to Portland last weekend was smooth sailing. And it helped that we caught a break in the rain.

For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. Psalm 91:11 ESV

Perfect for Sampling

Our tour guide was happy to take us to a coffee place:  Pip's Original Doughnuts. In NE Portland. With amazing little doughnuts. Perfect for sampling different flavors. My daughter liked the apple cider glaze. I liked the cinnamon and sugar. The tour guide (my sister-in-law) liked the raw honey with sea salt.

Early Thanksgiving

We have been waiting to see my sister's new home. We were able to make a quick visit on the way to join my husband's family for an early Thanksgiving gathering.

Sugared Cranberries

It looked simple online. Just two ingredients. Cranberries and sugar. And we have something new for Thanksgiving this year.

Baker in the House

I love having my daughter home for the weekend. I don't mind if she steps in to make dinner. And bakes some cookies.

Repeat the Sounding Joy

I may have beat my husband to the punch. Been first to crank up the Christmas music. He usually has The Young Messiah going by now. I am enjoying Citizens: Repeat the Sounding Joy in the car.

And the angel said to them, "Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Luke 2:10 ESV

Short Leash

Every now and then our golden retriever decides to make a run for the back property. But he could end up on a busy road. So I'm putting him on a short leash. For his own good. Reminds me of the 10 Commandments. They are for our protection.

For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. 1 John 4:3 ESV

Mobile Office

I have a new mobile office. If you want to call it that. I can sit in the car and do my Bible Study Fellowship homework. Listen to Christian radio if one of my favorite pastors is on. Drink coffee brewed at home. Works for me. (Until it gets much colder.)

I will dwell among the people of Israel and will be their God. And they shall know that I am the LORD their God, who brought them out of the land of Egypt that I might dwell among them. I am the LORD their God. Exodus 29:45-46 ESV

Reason for Everything

Have I mentioned lately that I love studying the Bible at Bible Study Fellowship?  Right now we are in Exodus. God gave detailed instructions for setting up the tabernacle. Why? Because God has a reason for everything. It all points to Jesus as the perfect sacrifice and perfect high priest.

And let them make me a sanctuary, that I may dwell in their midst. Exactly as I show you concerning the pattern of the tabernacle, and of all its furniture, so you shall make it. Exodus 25:8-9 ESV

The Testimony of God

Our church is wrapping up the series in 1 John. You can watch or listen to a powerful sermon by Pastor Matthias Haeusel, who is now a pastor at the Mars Hill Ballard Church.  Ever wonder what it means to come by the water and the blood? How do we know Jesus is the Son of God?

And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. 1 John 5:11-12 ESV

Does God Exist?

Can a Christian and an atheist have a civil and rational debate about the existence of God? Yes they can. Our friend, Rand Wagner, hosted an informative debate tonight. Both sides got to share their positions and answer questions. It is good to know what you believe and why.

By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible. Hebrews 11:3 ESV

Every Day Blogging

We are scrolling through 8 years of memories. That's how long I have been blogging. Every day. That's a lot of birthdays, Bible lessons, road trips, and recipes. Interspersed with bargain hunting and bagel love. First days of school. And sadly, last days of friends and family who are not with us anymore.

I asked my husband for his favorite posts. Here are three:

Remembering a special friend and classroom volunteer who lost her battle with cancer: http://widemargins.blogspot.com/2011/12/remember-mary.html

Remembering the year the kids built an igloo. And slept in it: http://widemargins.blogspot.com/2008/12/chilled-out.html

And his favorite picture of us when we were young:

Blog on! (I can do that.)

And I looked and arose and said to the nobles and to the officials and to the rest of the people, "Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes." Nehemiah 4:14 ESV

Mexican Restaurant Love

I happened to notice that the new restaurant was open for business. Perfect for a date night while our daughter is at a Bible study.

Welcome to the new Mexican restaurant in town, El Guadalajara. They are located in what used to be KFC, on First Street. Fresh, hot and delicious food with friendly customer service. And mushroom salsa!

Love my Baby Blue

I still love my baby blue. It's time to start wearing a warm down jacket again. Eight years ago I wrote about it on my blog. And I'm still thankful for a husband who warms my heart every day.

Thank You for Your Sacrifices!

It's been a while since I took my Grampa to school for show and tell. Bless his heart, he was a good sport to come and share about his experiences during World War 2.

On Veterans' Day I want to also recognize the sacrifices of the spouses. Like my Gramma. And my friends at church who have gone through recent deployments.

God bless you and may you feel appreciated!

Happy Birthday, Ruth!

I can think of several Proverbs 31 women in my life. I have my own mother, mother-in-law, and grandmothers.

And the woman who took me in as an awkward college student when I was far from the home. Bless Ruth for graciously opening her home and her heart. Happy Birthday!

On Duty

My times on duty are never wasted. I almost always have good conversations when it's my turn at the Connect Desk at church. Today I met some visitors and reconnected with an old friend.

By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. 1 John 5:2 ESV

Beauty of the Season

We are a good team. My husband puts plants and trees in pots. And I enjoy them. Every time I walk by.

For thus says the LORD, who created the heavens (he is God!), who formed the earth and made it (he established it; he did not create it empty, he formed it to be inhabited!): "I am the LORD, and there is no other. Isaiah 45:18 ESV

Bistro Lunch

What if your friend works lots of hours and it's hard to get together? Meet at her workplace. For lunch. I love the salad bar in our hospital Bistro. With self-serve olive oil and vinegar on the tables. Works for me.

Changed it Up

I don't always listen to Christian radio in the car. But when I do, I like to catch certain programs. Like Walk in the Word with James McDonald. But they changed up the programming on my local station. No problem. I can listen with my phone app or catch it online.

Grapes of Match

I wondered how long it would take. For the new community group host and I to develop synchrony. Just a couple weeks in, and we both brought a bowl of grapes to share.

Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. Hebrews 13:16 ESV

Double Duty

If my husband is going to build a fire in the stove, I might as well enjoy it. Hang around in the cozy kitchen. Clean a few things. And put the cast iron on to season. Works for me.

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV

Miss Hosting

What happens when you don't host community group any more? You don't have to shove everything back in your bedroom. Every week. You don't have to round up all the chairs when lots of people show up. You are not sad when hardly anyone shows up. Your fish bowl doesn't get cleaned as often. And you miss seeing your little friends.

Pictured: Additional seating at my daughter's new island before we took it to Seattle.

So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us. 1 Thessalonians 2:8 ESV

Focus on Jesus

Our name will change. But the focus is the same. Our church is about making much of Jesus. Sharing the good news of the gospel. Growing together. So we hang tight. Trust God to provide for our local church in the next chapter.

And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. 1 John 4:14-16 ESV

Back to the Barn

You can go home again. Or to your grandparents' old barn. In an instant. Even though that barn was torn down years ago. For the record, I did not hit the barn when I was learning to drive. (I may have come close.)

But the smell of sawdust in today's barn estate sale reminded me of how my Grampa organized his tools. And loved to whistle and talk while he worked on projects. Good memories.

Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. Hebrews 13:7 ESV
