Little Pumpkin

We have scaled everything way down. No costumes, no stash of candy, no big plans. Even our pumpkin is small. But it is home-grown. Works for us.

As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. 1 Timothy 6:17 ESV

Where is the Baby?

I was tempted to buy a Nativity set at the thrift store. Perfect for little friends who visit. But first, roll call. Mary and Jesus? Check. Three wise men with camels? Check. Shepherd and angel? Check. But wait! Where's baby Jesus? Can't have Christmas without baby Jesus!

who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, and which now has been manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, 2 Timothy 1:9-10 ESV

World Series Game

How do you watch a World Series baseball game if you don't have TV? Go to your friends' house and watch with them. That was a fun game. Plus it was good to hang out with friends from our community group.

As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. 1 Timothy 6:17 ESV

Cousin's Birthday

In honor of my cousin's birthday, I will not post a picture of when she was little enough to sit on my lap. Instead I will share a photo from a coffee date in 2009. Crazy how time flies!

That little cousin grew up to be a fine young woman. And a tough marine who has served our country well. Happy Birthday Cuz!

I thank my God always when I remember you in my prayers, because I hear of your love and of the faith that you have toward the Lord Jesus and for all the saints, Philemon 1:4-5 ESV

Summer Gone

Where did summer go? Time to turn on the heat. And start building fires. And thank my daughter for her labor of love splitting firewood last year.

Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, Colossians 3:12 ESV

Phone or Ferry

Our older children are only a phone call away. Or ferry ride. Our sons called this weekend. And it was nice to have our daughter home for her dad's birthday!

After Birthday

Where can you go and sit a while? Visit. Drink coffee and have breakfast? We know a place perfect for an after-birthday gathering.

Fun to have our older daughter home to celebrate her dad's birthday.

Something to Celebrate

No big parties this year. But every birthday is something to celebrate. And remember God's faithfulness over the years.

The older we grow together, the more I appreciate the man I married.

Happy 54th birthday!

Weather Bursts

Today's weather came in bursts. Blue sky. Dark clouds. Torrential rain. Hail. A big rainbow. And more rain. Reminds me of what an amazing Creator we have.

High School Volleyball

I miss the days of watching my daughter and friends play volleyball. Sitting with parents on the bleachers. Some of the girls are now playing at the high school level. I went to the last home game to cheer them on. So proud of them!

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, Colossians 3:23 ESV

Chili Fest

I sampled each one and couldn't pick a favorite. Traditional chili. Pumpkin quinoa chili. White chicken chili. My veggie chili. Along with fresh guacamole and chips. Homemade bread. Plus birthday cake for my husband, made with love by our youngest daughter. That's how a community group puts on a chili fest.

I remember finding out he was on the way. And then praying through the pregnancy and the day of the delivery. Now our little community group baby is one year old! His parents dedicated him to God at church yesterday. On his first birthday.

Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:30-31 ESV

Dear Friends

I met a couple at church when they were brand new. New to our church and to the United States. Now my dear friends are returning to their home in South Africa. So hard to say good-bye but I know we will see each other again.

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11 ESV

Start Somewhere

I need to preach more to myself. How do I approach the dishes and laundry? Jump in. Start somewhere. Success builds success. Why don't I apply that to filing and organizing? Worth a try.

Notice Beauty

There is so much beauty around. I love how the leaves are changing colors. I need to pay attention because before you know it, the leaves will be gone. Like this tree outside my daughter's guitar teacher's studio.

For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. Romans 1:19-20 ESV

Throwback Ruffles

Looking back, I remember what a good sport my dad was. And is. He put up with a house full of women so patiently. Bless my mom for all her work sewing dresses. Even when we didn't always appreciate matchy-matchy ruffles.

I have many good memories of growing up with my two younger sisters in Hong Kong and Taiwan. Just wish we lived closer to each other now!

Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, Colossians 3:12 ESV

Nine Plagues Today

I feel like I am watching a movie. And seeing how the characters develop and grow. In today's lecture at Bible Study Fellowship, we saw how Moses grew in faith and confidence. He started out timid and unsure. But by the ninth plague he boldly told Pharaoh God's message. God was patient with Moses and Moses rose to the challenge.

So Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh and said to him, "Thus says the LORD, the God of the Hebrews, 'How long will you refuse to humble yourself before me? Let my people go, that they may serve me. Exodus 10:3 ESV

Long Coffee and Short Hello

I love planned and unplanned. I met a friend for coffee. Tried pour over coffee and enjoyed good conversation. Then randomly met my parents in town for a quick hello. Makes for a great day!

Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 ESV

Labor of Our Fruit

That first ping was a beautiful sound. Say the novice water-bath canners. Nice to know our jars are sealed. My husband has been hard at work picking and processing apples. And now we have 12 quarts of delicious home-canned applesauce.

He who gathers in summer is a prudent son, but he who sleeps in harvest is a son who brings shame. Proverbs 10:5 ESV

Goodbye is Only Temporary

Just when I get to know someone, they get shipped out. Or move for other reasons. Some of that happens because of the strong military presence at our church.

Today I said goodbye to a couple and their sweet children. Other friends are returning to their home country of South Africa.

But today I also said "Welcome home" to a friend who returned from deployment in Afghanistan.

The good news is that for believers we know that goodbye is only temporary.

For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. Therefore encourage one another with these words. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18 ESV

Once Upon a Time

It cracks me up when I think about old dreams. In college I thought about becoming a math teacher. I ended up in elementary ed. Good fit. I got a taste of what it would be like to teach algebra last year. Much harder than I thought!

In 7th grade I said I wanted to be a librarian when I grew up. You could say I attained that. But I need to improve my system for knowing what I have and where it is.

Which reminds me, I once considered becoming a professional organizer. Don't laugh, friends!

Better is the end of a thing than its beginning, and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit. Ecclesiastes 7:8 ESV

Bumper Crop

The apple trees in our backyard are loaded this year. My husband has a new hobby. Picking apples and making delicious applesauce. I like his overnight crock pot applesauce the best. Our daughter prefers the stove top variety. No worries, there's plenty for everyone.

As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. 1 Timothy 6:17 ESV

Some meals are made with leftovers in mind. Like Tuesday's black bean turkey chili with orange peppers. Sadly, it was left out all night. Yesterday's rice, beans, and seasoned meat was set aside for my daughter's lunch and leftovers for another meal. Only I put the container with the leftovers in my daughter's lunch. She wondered why there was only meat and no rice. At least it wasn't oatmeal!

I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. Philippians 4:12 ESV

Does God Exist?

I am getting mentally prepared. To listen to the upcoming debate my friend is hosting. What are some arguments for and against God? I read an interesting review of atheist Richard Dawkins' biography. Written by an atheist.

Local friends, plan now to attend the debate on November 15 at 6 pm at the Shelton Civic Center. This is a free event.

Early Birthday

We had an early birthday celebration for my husband last night. My mother-in-law knows how to put on a spread! We had a yummy roast beef dinner with my mom's garden-fresh salad. It was also a treat to watch the Seattle Seahawks football game on TV, since we don't have cable. Let the birthday month commence!

Walk First

My husband knows me well. If I took my Sunday nap, I would not feel like going anywhere after. So he encouraged me to go on a walk first. I'm glad he did. It was perfect Goldilocks weather. Not too hot; not too cold. Works for me.

Pictured: Our daughter took this picture near the end of our walk.

And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. Ephesians 5:2 ESV

All the Time I Need

I don't know how my favorite blogger, Tim Challies, does what he does. He cranks out meaty book reviews and articles, and has time for ministry and family. But he knows what is important.
He says: Life is a vapor, too short, too fleeting. But I believe this: I may not have time to do everything I would like to do, but I have all the time I need for those things that God expects me to do.

Good thoughts at his blog post at:

Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Ephesians 5:15-16 ESV

Beautiful Palette

What's better than a beautiful palette of blues and pinks in the sky? Sharing the view with your daughter. And letting her take a picture while you drive.

Places at the Table

I love hospitality. I wish I practiced more of it. Like our friends who invited us to dinner. Set three more plates at the long table. And made us feel welcome. And loved.

Internal Flow Chart

Do I need a new mug?  My internal flow chart would go like this:
Is it Fiesta ware?
In a color I love? (Bonus if I don't already have that color.)
Less than a dollar?
Then, yes!

As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. 1 Timothy 6:17 ESV

Still Looking Good

No more waiting for the puff of air. They have a different way to check eye pressure. Still get asked if the first looks clearer or the second. How about now? And there are eye drops, dilation, and ugly sunglasses. But the good news is that my eyes are healthy. No sign of optic neuritis.

Then the LORD said to him, "Who has made man's mouth? Who makes him mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, the LORD? Exodus 4:11 ESV
