The Big Reveal

I will remember that hot July day for a long time. The way family and friends came together for an open house event. And how I was kicked out of my kitchen. Until the Big Reveal.

Early Morning Flight

There is an upside to an early morning flight. Traffic was light. Plus it wasn't too hot in our non-air-conditioned car.

But it is always hard to say good-bye. No matter how old they get.

Come When They Can

One of these days it will just be the two of us. Good thing we are best friends.

But for now I am happy with having our youngest at home. And the other ones come when then can. We make it work.

Love Our Dad!

We eased up on the group photos this reunion. Especially since one of the three sisters couldn't make it. But we took a moment to get a photo of my dad with two of his daughters. We love our Dad!

Pictured: With my Dad and my middle sister.

What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" Luke 11:11-13 ESV

Sister Sister

We just about filled two rows. Even with my husband and younger daughter downstairs, serving in Sunday school. It was great to have our four children, plus my sister and family in church with us today.

All the Way to the Water

I like exploring new places. I had been to Burfoot County Park but never made it all the way to the water. It was perfect for a family mini-hike and picnic lunch.

Grab Your Bucket

What's a fun family activity for a reunion? Not too far away. Everyone can participate. Grab your bucket! We're picking blueberries! Twelve of us picked 23 pounds today, in an hour or so.

These all look to you, to give them their food in due season. When you give it to them, they gather it up; when you open your hand, they are filled with good things. Psalm 104:27-28 ESV

My Comfort Food

That's what I call comfort food. Homemade Chinese food.At my parents' home. Made by my mom and my brother-in-law. Works for me!

In the Washer

I check before I put clothes in the wash. Remove coins and receipts. So I did not expect to find a note waiting for me. My daughter left me a thank-you note. Works for me!

We can count on him. For good counsel. Unconditional love and support.

Ending Acts, for Now

Our current brief series in the book of Acts has come to an end. Don't miss Pastor Mark Driscoll's sermon from Acts 11. He tackles some good questions, like "Who can become a Christian?" "How do you become a Christian?" And "What if I don't feel worthy to be a Christian?" Watch or read online:

Fish Taco Love

My mom never made fish tacos when I was growing up. I wouldn't have appreciated it. But now I think they are great.

Bagel Cousins

I love special events with good deals. Like the 20th anniversary of my favorite bagel shop. Perfect for taking my nephew and nieces, who just arrived from Pasadena. 19 cent bagels, anyone? It's on me. I have a birthday gift card!

Best Big Sister

My parents didn't give me a big sister. But God did. When I was in college, and miles from my parents in Taiwan, a family took me in. Loved me. I gained a roommate, big sister, and a friend for life. Happy Birthday B!

Birthday Flower Love

I'm glad we don't know everything about each other. There is still room for mystery. Even after almost 29 years of marriage. My husband thought I wasn't big on cut flowers.

I love cut flowers. I'm just not big on spending money on flowers. I was blessed to receive lots of cut flowers for my birthday. And a hanging basket!

Pictured: My beautiful bouquet of birthday hydrangeas.

And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Matthew 6:28-29 ESV

People Circles

I was waiting to see what connections would be made. Who knows who? Where do my people circles intersect? So it was fun to find out my long-time friend and neighbor is the English student of my friend from church. Small world!

Do not forsake your friend and your father's friend, and do not go to your brother's house in the day of your calamity. Better is a neighbor who is near than a brother who is far away. Proverbs 27:10 ESV

Beautiful Cards

I think I got the wrong cards. I don't know who those birthday cards were written to. But I do appreciate the kind words. And it was great to read the memories people shared.

Clean-up Crew

I wasn't expecting a clean-up crew. But my sister and her husband surprised me by showing up today. With my darling nieces. It was nice to have a quick visit before they headed back to Oregon.

Garden Party to Remember

We've had some fun open house events. But this one takes the cake. Friends and family came together from near and far. To put on a birthday celebration to remember. Amazing food. Including authentic Mexican and Chinese. Beautiful orchard setting. Touching moments, including my husband's sweet speech and my friend's poem. And did I mention the cake? My daughter's masterpiece. I am so loved!

Praise the LORD! Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! Psalm 106:1 ESV

Bring People Together

What do I want for my birthday? My husband knows that one of my favorite things is bringing people together. So we are throwing an open house event. Tomorrow. It will be fun to see who shows up and who knows who. And now back to party preparations.

Enjoy life with the wife whom you love, all the days of your vain life that he has given you under the sun, because that is your portion in life and in your toil at which you toil under the sun. Ecclesiastes 9:9 ESV

Years Count

Today's birthday is significant to me. Not just because it ends in zero. Two dear friends didn't make it past 49. So I want to make my years count.

Plus I am very grateful for renewed health. Last Sunday's sermon included the healing of the bedridden man, I know what it is like to be in bed for months at a time. Or use a wheelchair. I don't know how long this good stretch will last, but I don't take it for granted. Happy Birthday to me!

Old Enough

I am old enough to remember when. The kids were little. Sitting in car seats. Collecting sticks. And now I am old enough to see. How great my kids and nieces and nephews have turned out.

Preach it, Cousin

It was great to visit a church in Olympia tonight. And hear my cousin preach. He gave a powerful message about who is charge. Am I trying to run my own kingdom? Or submitting to God?

He shared some helpful definitions.

Kingdom: area of the king's domain.
Repentance: Turn from what is false and turn toward what is true.

Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?" And Peter said to them, "Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:37-38 ESV

It's hard to get siblings together in one place. So it was great that my husband and his four siblings were together for a barbecue in Portland today.

Fireworks Went Off

My favorite Fourth of July memory is driving home to Portland from a visit to my grandparents' home in Washington. My boyfriend and I talked about getting married.

As fireworks went off all down the freeway. We decided to pray and seek God's confirmation. Later that month we got engaged. And married in December.

Together. For 73 Years.

I've been watching my grandparents for years. Observed how they love each other. Enjoy life together. And get through the hard times. I've heard them laugh. And pray. Together.
