Taking Care of Dad

Who always has a smile and quick joke? No matter how he is feeling? Who gets loving care from his wife? Who has medical attention from trained family members at a moment's notice? And who spent some time in the ER for an infection and is home recovering? Love you, Dad!

Pictured: My dad is ready to go home.

Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul. 3 John 1:2 ESV

Jesus' Life, Your Life

Here's the big question: What is your life? Pastor Mark Driscoll preached about how life is uncertain, brief, and should be urgent. You don't know how much time you have, and you can't control the future. So focus on the decisions you can make. And follow Jesus' example.

Jesus had a clear sense of what God wanted Him to do. What about you?

Don't miss this sermon with practical applications for your life.

yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. James 4:14 ESV

Shop Happy

My kids know where I like to shop. And found me in my favorite bargain store today. Nice to have three of my four kids in town for the weekend, plus my son's girlfriend.

As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. 1 Timothy 6:17 ESV

Jesus' Conflicts, Your Conflicts

Don't miss last Sunday's sermon about conflict. Pastor Mark Driscoll preached about something we all face. We can either have godly conflict or worldly conflict. We can choose humility. We need to see our own sin. Get quieter, not louder. Speak less. Submit to godly authority. Remember that we are fighting the devil, not the person. And draw near to God.

Listen or watch at:

But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, "God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble." Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. James 4:6-8 ESV

Coffee for One

I miss my weekly coffee on Wednesday mornings. And I miss my coffee-drinking friends who used to go to Bible Study Fellowship with me!

Pictured: I hardly ever stop for coffee, but I did this morning.

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. Colossians 3:16 ESV

Happy Birthday Grampa!

Who is my favorite poet? That's easy. My grampa! I love the way he wrote poems for birthdays and special occasions. Up until his stroke a couple years ago.

And today is his 93rd birthday. I am blessed to have such a rich legacy!

Your testimonies are my heritage forever, for they are the joy of my heart. Psalm 119:111 ESV

Final Fundraiser

I am looking forward to dinner on Friday night. It will be great to be served by the 7th and 8th graders at my daughter's school. Plus it is for a good cause. This is one of the last fundraisers for their big trip to Washington DC in April.

Local friends are welcome to join us Friday, March 28 at First Baptist Church in Shelton from 6 to 8 PM. Enjoy a spaghetti supper while you watch a silent movie and support our kids. ($6.50 per person or $25 for a family of 4 or more).

You can read more about it at:

Sunday Nap

I don't think I appreciated them as much when I was growing up. I love Sunday naps! Just what I needed.

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28 ESV

Science Fair Girl

Sometimes your hard work pays off. And you bring home a trophy. At the last science fair of your K-8th grade career.

And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:6 ESV

Last Report

That might be it. The last oral report of her Christian school career. My daughter has recited poetry, spoken on Bible or patriotic themes, and shared biographies.

And done research and experimented in the name of science. Today she gave a science report on memory. I missed it because she had the chance to go first. With my blessing.

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, Colossians 3:23 ESV

More Conversation

Sometimes just saying one little thing leads to more conversation. Could be small talk. Or asking a question. You never know when you will meet someone that knows the same people you do. Or has a shared interest. Or has a spiritual question about something you were just reading about in the Bible. I love that.

Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. Matthew 24:30-31 ESV

Getting Closer

The Bible teacher asked if we think Jesus is returning in our lifetime. I don't know. But we are getting closer every day! I want to be ready. And make sure I share the good news of the gospel with others while I wait.

Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect."Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his master has set over his household, to give them their food at the proper time? Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. Matthew 24:44-46 ESV

It truly is a mystery. How the world can hold beauty and pain at the same time. Like today's devastating crash of a helicopter in downtown Seattle. With trees in bloom everywhere.

I'm glad I am studying something important. Something lasting. God's Word. I am in the book of Matthew for a couple more weeks.

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. Matthew 24:35 NIV

Local Talent

I did not know my little town had so much talent! I was blown away by the musical and theatrical talent in the production of Wizard of Oz. I knew two friends were performing and got one of the last available tickets for yesterday's first performance. If you are in Shelton next weekend and hear of any extra tickets, you should go! It is put on Faith Lutheran Church with several churches represented.

Believe Weekend

And away she went. I'm glad my daughter has good friends at school and her youth group. Many of them attended the 24-hour Believe conference for junior highers in Portland, Oregon. Bless the leaders for taking them and staying overnight with them.

Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. 1 Timothy 4:12 ESV

Seattle Driver

My husband offered to be the designated driver. And accompany my parents and a visitor from China all around Seattle. Sounds like they had a great day, with some sun breaks.

Seeing Jesus

This year in the book of Matthew has helped me appreciate Jesus in a fresh way. His powerful teaching. Patience. Commitment to the Father's will. No matter how hard. And amazing sacrificial love. Thank You, Jesus!

"O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! Matthew 23:37 ESV

With Our All

I love my discussion group at Bible Study Fellowship. I learn a lot from the other women who are working through the same Scripture passages. Today we talked about what it means to love God with our all. All our heart, soul, mind, and strength.

And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. Matthew 22:38-39 ESV

Plain Truth

Some people have the wrong view of Jesus. They think He is all love and forgiveness. Yes, He acts out of pure love. But when on earth He spoke the truth plainly. Powerfully. I am looking forward to tomorrow's lecture on Matthew 23 in Bible Study Fellowship. And prepared to be convicted of my own sin.

"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean. Matthew 23:25-26 ESV

Jesus' Tongue, Your Tongue

Do your words matter? And are you a coach or a critic? Pastor Mark Driscoll humbly shared what he is learning from James 3.

From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. James 3:10 ESV

Communion at Church

Communion is not the same with my husband teaching Sunday school every week. I miss taking communion with him. And having him pray with me. But I'm glad he can teach the children so faithfully.

And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me." Luke 22:19 ESV

Sister and Daughter Time

Pour another cup of tea. Set another plate at the table. Great to have my older daughter home for the weekend! It went by too fast!

School All Day

I'm not used to packing a lunch. For myself. And going to school all day. The students didn't have class, but the teachers had a training day. I was invited to come since I help with algebra at my daughter's school. I enjoyed learning how to use the Chromebook computers. But I missed my nap!

Love Studying Matthew

I don't want the book of Matthew to end. I have been learning so much in Bible Study Fellowship this year. I love how God's Word is new and meaningful every time I read it.

And Jesus answered them, "Truly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, 'Be taken up and thrown into the sea,' it will happen. And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith." Matthew 21:21-22 ESV

Chapel Time

We interrupt this regularly scheduled parent prayer time. So we can attend chapel downstairs. Listen to the missionary speaker, watch the lively puppet show, and hear the students recite scripture. And sing.

This is why I love Christian school education!

but Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven." Matthew 19:14 ESV

Love my Island

Sometimes I think about how I didn't find what I was looking for. I thought I wanted a kitchen island with storage underneath. Maybe an eating bar. But then we found a beautiful granite slab. So my husband built a frame out of a former bunk bed. It is perfect!

By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; Proverbs 24:3 ESV

Jeus' Works, Your Works

What kind of faith do you have? Is it dead? (All lip service and no lifestyle.) Demonic? (Even the demons know who Jesus is.)  Or dynamic? (You cannot meet Jesus and not change.)

If you wonder if Bible writers James and Paul contradict each other, Pastor Mark Driscoll tackles the faith versus works debate.

Don't miss this sermon on James 2:14-26!

So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, "You have faith and I have works." Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder! James 2:17-19 ESV

Good Review

It's good thing to go through a church membership class. Again. To be reminded of what I believe and why. Plus we were able to meet some new people at church.

And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. Philippians 1:9-11 ESV

Last Expanding Her Horizons

My daughter won't be going back to that conference. Unless she returns as a volunteer. The Expanding Your Horizons conference is for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade girls. It is a chance for middle school girls to hear about math and science careers from women in those fields.

I appreciate the seminars for parents too. Maybe I should go back as a volunteer!
