Practical Help

We came out of the movie theatre after watching someone portray Jesus on the big screen. A woman approached us and asked for help. We don't give out cash as a rule. But occasionally we help with a practical need. So we drove to the gas station and my husband pumped gas for her. Listened to her story, talked to her about Jesus, and gave her a hug. We can do that.

But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? 1 John  3:17 ESV

As We Are

I thought I had a night off. Since our community group was invited to attend the new Son of God movie. So no dinner to prepare for five to fifteen people. No mad dash to tidy and sweep.

Even had time for a nap. Before some neighbors stopped by for a visit. Never mind the mess. People are always welcome to stop by. Just take us as we are.

Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. Romans 12:13 ESV

Keep Praying

I pray with some other parents and grandparents at the school every Wednesday. Today's prayer time included praise for some big answers to prayer. We keep praying until God answers!

But Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." Matthew 19:26 ESV

Start Something

I try to start something. Even if I have to run an errand before dinner. Slice and marinate meat and chop veggies. Cook something part-way, and finish later. Or get the slow cooker going early in the day. Works for us.

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV

Jesus' Love, Your Love

That's what I appreciate about my pastor. He speaks the truth plainly. No holding back. Yesterday's sermon was about love and the law. God's law is all or nothing. You cannot save yourself. And everyone will judged.

But wait, there's good news. God sent His only Son to step down from heaven to pay the price for our sins.

Don't miss this powerful sermon from the second chapter of James.

For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it. James 2:10 ESV

In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 1 John 4:9-10 ESV

Teamwork

We serve as a team. Even if he teaches Sunday school and I don't. We go over his lesson ahead of time. Sometimes I provide supplies from my stash. Right now we are helping with the four-week church membership class. Together.

Remembering the Tulips

Has it been almost a year? My son and his girlfriend drove south and we drove north. Met at the tulip fields. What a fun family day!

Rescued

She enjoyed her freedom. Until dark. One of our chickens escaped under the fence and scavenged through the orchard. But after dark she took shelter by the house. On a garbage can. Until my husband rescued her and put her back in the coop.

O LORD, how manifold are your works! In wisdom have you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. Psalm 104:24 ESV

Have You Not Read

What did Jesus do when faced with tough questions? He always started with the Scripture. Sounds like a good example to follow.

And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking, "Is it lawful to divorce one's wife for any cause?" He answered, "Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, 'Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate." Matthew 19:3-6 ESV

Missing Them

I miss my coffee buddies. My mother-in-law and my older daughter.

And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. Colossians 3:14 ESV

Days Off

A couple days off. No driving here and there. I could totally get a lot done at home. Or enjoy some rest.

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28 ESV

Your Seat, Jesus' Seat

Don't let your preferences become prejudices. There's no room for partiality in the Christian faith, because we are all created equal. Listen to Pastor Mark Driscoll's sermon on James 2: 1-7.

Lunching

We scan the parking lot for white cars. And are happy when we run into my parents at lunch.

Not One Direction

My husband has been planning his routes. Avoiding left turns. Since he had a minor accident. But today he was able to zip tie a blinker to his truck. Now he can signal and turn left. Now if he can just find a new fender to put on his truck.

And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19 ESV

Little Things Add Up

It's the little things. Getting up every morning with our daughter and taking her to school. Jumping in to help at home even after working all day. Praying with me. Countless acts of kindness. I am loved!

However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. Ephesians 5:33 ESV

Dinner Inspiration

It doesn't take much to inspire me. Like tonight's dinner plan for community group. I had plenty of cherry tomatoes. Which would go nicely on taco salad. And be a change of pace from my usual soup. Works for me.

Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. 1 Peter 4:9 ESV

Know the Word, Do the Word

If you watch or listen to Pastor Mark Driscoll's 5th sermon in James, make sure you watch all the way to the end. I was encouraged that it's not up to me to try harder and do better. I don't have to listen to Satan's accusations. Jesus says He will trade my dirty rags for His clean white ones.

http://marshill.com/media/james-jesus-s-bold-little-brother/james-1-19-27

Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him. And the LORD said to Satan, "The LORD rebuke you, O Satan! The LORD who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is not this a brand plucked from the fire?" Now Joshua was standing before the angel, clothed with filthy garments. And the angel said to those who were standing before him, "Remove the filthy garments from him." And to him he said, "Behold, I have taken your iniquity away from you, and I will clothe you with pure vestments." Zechariah 3:1-4 ESV

Rug Delivery

We found a beautiful wool rug for my daughter's studio apartment. Who knew that when we delivered it, we would be snowed in? And end up sleeping on the floor.

I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. Philippians 4:12 ESV

Stayed Put

It was supposed to be a quick trip. Up and back. But that all changed when it snowed. I am so thankful we got to my daughter's apartment in Seattle safely. And stayed put for the night.

Tacoma Mars Hill

We missed church this morning. But that's okay. We were able to catch the 5 pm service in Tacoma on our way home from Seattle. It was great to visit a sister church and not miss a sermon in the James series.

Care for Little Ones

What if you took all my prayers and made a word cloud? I'm guessing my children would be the focus. So this verse is comforting to me. The idea of angels watching out for little ones.

"See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven. Matthew 18:10 ESV

Your Estimated Wait Time

I try to get my Bible Study Fellowship lesson done first thing. If possible. And I don't try to watch shows or anything else at the same time. But if I am going to be on hold for an hour at a time, two days in a row, I might as well study the Bible then. That's how I multi-task.

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Matthew 6:33 ESV

Always Comes Together

I never know how it will all come together. Where will I find the energy to tidy up the house? What will I cook? How many people will show up? Yet it always comes together. My daughter helped me clean the house. And the pork roast was just big enough. For six of us at community group tonight.

Listen to Him

My Bible Study Fellowship lesson was on Matthew 17 today. When Jesus was transfigured on the mountain, God spoke from the cloud. God affirmed Jesus' deity and His ministry. And gave the simple command: Listen to him.

Do I take time to listen to Jesus? Really listen? That's what I want to remember as I open God's Word.

He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him." Matthew 17:5 ESV

Jesus' Temptation, Your Temptation

Being tempted is not a sin. But how you respond is crucial. Pastor Mark Driscoll preached a powerful message about how Jesus was tempted and what we can learn from Him. (Luke 4:1-13).

The fourth sermon in the James series contains lessons from victorious athletes (don't give up), lessons from dumb fish (there's always a hook), and lessons from "pregnant moms" (temptation never reveals the ultimate goal: death). And don't forget, when you are tempted, you can run to Jesus!

Listen or watch the sermon here:
http://marshill.com/media/james-jesus-s-bold-little-brother/james-1-12-15

Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am being tempted by God," for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death. James 1:12-15 ESV

Work in Progress

I see my shortcomings. Need for improvement. But thankfully God sees me as a work in progress. And He will help me all along the way.

And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:6 ESV
