All About Football

People are going a little crazy. It's all about the big football game coming up. A local parade favorite is even decked out in blue.

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV

Lunch Privileges

My husband has a favorite place for lunch. Next door to where he works. So I tried it out today. Hot soup. Served with love. Thanks, Mom and Dad!

Parent Prayer Time

The regulars were not able to come pray today. But that's okay. Another friend was able to come. I am always blessed by the parent prayer time.

pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:17-18 ESV

Sometimes you need a little perspective. Like reading this blog post about a woman's visit to Uganda:

But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. 1 Timothy 6:6-8 ESV

Rich Jesus, Poor Jesus

Yesterday Pastor Mark Driscoll explained how we can exult in our condition even when we feel lowly. Don't miss any of the sermons in this practical series.

Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation, and the rich in his humiliation, because like a flower of the grass he will pass away. James 1:9-10 ESV

Picture Window

I'm glad we helped my daughter move this weekend. Now we can picture her new place. I can't wait to go back and visit.

And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:6 ESV

Up and In

That's a lot of trips. Two trips to Seattle in two days. Countless trips up and down three flights of stairs at our daughter's new apartment. But we got it done. All moved out and cleaned up. And everything moved up and in.

The LORD is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him. Psalm 28:7 ESV

Have Island Will Travel

We found an island for our daughter's new apartment online. Purchased it. Borrowed a van to transport it to Seattle. And hauled it up three flights of stairs. Mission accomplished.

I will praise the name of God with a song; I will magnify him with thanksgiving. Psalm 69:30 ESV

Moments In-Between

I have decided to embrace my chopped up days. I can tote books or writing materials. Seize the moments in-between. Should toss in a water bottle and healthy snacks while I'm at it.

Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Ephesians 5:15-16 ESV

Study God's Word

Every week is a reunion. I see women from four years of discussion groups, long-time friends, and new friends from this year. It is great to study God's Word together.

The next welcome meeting in Olympia is Wednesday, February 5 at 9:20 AM. There are classes at other times in other locations, too.;jsessionid=d0e3495e880b609fd2e0c3934fe9

Then Jesus answered her, "O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire." And her daughter was healed instantly. Matthew 15:28 ESV

Baby Nos

I can start with baby Nos. Say no to the little things. Like innocent wrapped candies that lead to other sugar temptations. I need to start somewhere.

But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified. 1 Corinthians 9:27 ESV

Life is Hard but God is Good

It's not a question of if. It is when. We are going to face trials. Life is sometimes hard. But God is always good.

We all need more than self-help. We need God-help.

Don't miss the second sermon in the James series with Mark Driscoll.

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. James 1:2-4 ESV

Full Sunday

We packed a lot in one Sunday. Powerful sermon at church. Impromptu lunch with my parents and a friend. Watched my first football game from beginning to end. Saw people cheering on the street.  And to top it off, we don't have to worry about school tomorrow.

Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ Philippians 3:8 ESV

Sisters Forever

My youngest sister was in town for a little while. Now the three sisters are in three states again. But I am thankful for what we do have. A strong bond and lots of good memories. I am blessed.

Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. 1 Peter 3:8 ESV

Happy 75th!

That's how my dad likes it. Simple celebrations. Family coming together to share food and fun. It was great to have two out of three daughters and five out of eleven grandchildren there to celebrate my dad's 75th birthday.

Happy birthday to my childhood hero who never let me down.

For our boast is this, the testimony of our conscience, that we behaved in the world with simplicity and godly sincerity, not by earthly wisdom but by the grace of God, and supremely so toward you. 2 Corinthians 1:12 ESV

Good to be Back

And now back to our regularly scheduled community group. I wasn't sure how many would come. We ended up with 17 adults and children. Glad I chopped lots of veggies for my stir fry. We pulled up all the stools and chairs and made it work. Good to be back together!

And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, Acts 2:46 ESV

I would like to have one-on-one time with each niece. Get to know them better. Go on outings. (Thrift and bargain stores, anyone?)  Make stuff. (Who wants to bake something?) But I will settle for seizing the moments I do have. Like sharing a sub sandwich with my niece the other day.

So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us. 1 Thessalonians 2:8 ESV

Tea for Me

I used my last tea bag last night. Regular that is. Have plenty of herbal on hand. So I was really happy to find some at my bargain store today. In the marked down section.  My favorite kind, even. Tetley.

As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. 1 Timothy 6:17 ESV

Jesus' Bold Little Brother

I am guilty of not giving him enough credit. I only thought of James as the writer of a book of the Bible. But Jesus' little brother grew up to be a powerful leader in the Christian church. The first sermon in the James series opened my eyes. Don't miss it!

Kick Off

It was an exciting day at church. Three services. Five people got baptized. Kicked off the new series in James. Saw old friends and met some new people. I learned how to use the new computers at the Connect Desk. Can't wait for next Sunday.

Tomorrow is a big day. It's the grand opening for our new church building in downtown Olympia. Three services at 8:30 AM, 10:30 AM, and 12:30 PM. Pastor Mark Driscoll is kicking off the new series in the book of James at all the Mars Hill churches. Come join us!

Family Fondue Friday

I can be spontaneous. Pack up my dinner preparations. Join my sister and family for fondue. Sweet and savory. Works for us.

Birthday Sub

If someone wants a sub sandwich on her birthday, I'm all for it. I joined my sister, husband, and four girls at our local Subway. Including the birthday girl, who is 11 today.

Perfect Timing

I ran into the post office just before closing. My dad had the same idea. So I got to see him open his package with the new hat from my daughter. Perfect timing.

So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90:12 ESV

The best decision of 2014 so far? Reading Decisive: How to Make Better Choices in Life and Work by Chip and Dan Heath.  I like how these two brothers share research, interesting stories, and practical information. You can read the first chapter online for free.

Cast Iron Year

I might try reverse resolutions. Based on what I actually did. In 2013 I resolved to convert to cast iron. No more playing metal utensil police. I love my cast iron skillets and dutch oven. Totally works for me.

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV

The Day is Coming

That was a strong finish. Last sermon in the Malachi series at Mars Hill Church. On the final words in the Old Testament before 400 years of silence. Pastor Mark Driscoll preached about heaven and hell, the Bible, sin, with a special message to men.

Listen online here:

"Remember the law of my servant Moses, the statutes and rules that I commanded him at Horeb for all Israel. "Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes. And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction." Malachi 4:4-6 ESV

Sister Time

One of the perks of being a parent is seeing your children grow up to be best friends. Our daughters had fun in Seattle the last couple days.

Away He Goes

I made the best travel plans I could. Coordinated travel times, work schedules, closest airports, etc. Only to have my son's return flight delayed, then cancelled yesterday.

But it all worked out. With my older daughter's help. She spared me an early morning trip back to the airport. And away he goes.

New Year Candle

The power went out at my parents' house just before we ate. Good thing the food was basically ready. Maybe we should have a candlelit dinner every New Year's Day. It was a memorable way to start the year.

But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. Lamentations 3:21-23 ESV

Bringing in the New Year

We don't usually get to spend New Year's Eve with my in-laws. But they are in town and just down the road. Perfect for sharing dinner and games.
