Coming and Going

The year 2013 has been characterized by comings and goings. We left the house we built and moved into a rental across town. Our adult children come and go. So we savor the times we are all together. Like last weekend.

Great to have our oldest home from California for the week.

Park it

My son drove us all around downtown Seattle looking for a parking spot. My son's girlfriend also drove all over looking for a spot. Later we met up. And found out we parked in the same garage, on the same floor, and right across the way. Without any coordination. What are the odds?

Men in Beards

I am surrounded by men in beards. At home these days and at church. It's great to have both sons home for a couple days.

Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love. 1 Corinthians 16:13-14 ESV

Coffee Christmas

We went straight from the airport to my daughter's workplace. And had all four children and one girlfriend in one place. (Day after) Christmas with the fam!

he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. Christmas Dinner Love

My mom knows how to serve up a wonderful meal. With all the trimmings, as they say. All I did was show up with the turkey and make the gravy. I wish I had her energy and skill to pull it all together.

Pictured: My mom and I last Sunday. I didn't get any pictures of the Christmas dinner. Too busy enjoying the food and fellowship!

Heart Fiesta

I can feel the love. My mother-in-law knows what I like. Fiestaware dishes. But I didn't know they made a heart-shaped bowl. Beautiful. And it's for me!

Christmas 2013

It is a gift to have time with family. We made the rounds. From breakfast at my in-laws' to dinner at my parents'. And time in the evening with my sister and family.

Pictured: Great to have three of our children home today.

And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger." Christmas Eve Service

It was great to attend the Christmas Eve service in our new building. With three out of four children with us.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. John 1:1-5 ESV

Morning Walk

My husband didn't have to go in to work until noon. Which left time for a morning walk. Not too cold, not too wet. Works for me.

Chinese Christmas

Today I got to hear the Christmas story in English and Chinese. Thanks to my dad preaching at the Olympia Chinese Christian Church. My son, his girlfriend, and her sister also joined us. It was a cultural experience!

My dad did an outstanding job and my mom was a great assistant with the music and the slides.

And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, "Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:9-11 ESV

In the House

Time to stock up on groceries. There are more than three of us. My son is in the house. Let the pre-Christmas celebrations begin!

Christmas Program Love

We know exactly what to expect at these programs. Cute little kids. Heart-felt songs. The Christmas story memorized and performed. With
proud parents and grandparents. Including us.

Our youngest did a great job in the 7th and 8th grade play. It's hard to believe this was her last Christmas program at the Christian School!

Day to Share

We had to share one vehicle this morning. So we teamed up and took my daughter to her Christmas program practice. And dropped my husband off at work. But first we stopped for a breakfast date in the hospital basement. Works for us!

How to Cook Everything

I don't like to loan out books. I'd much rather give them away. Like my new favorite cookbook, How to Cook Everything by Mark Bittman. I gave it to my daughter. And kept my eyes peeled for a replacement. Today I found one at the thrift store. It's not the latest edition, but if I find a newer one, I can give this one away.

Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. Hebrews 13:16 ESV

Dispatch from Olympia

My husband comes home from work and leaves again. He keeps running to Olympia to help with our new church building. Bless his heart.

Here is more information about our church. My husband is not pictured in the photos, but you can see the scope of the project.

Say Cheese

The party was for a special little friend. (Can't believe our community group baby is three this week!) But I think the guests had lots of fun too. I love how my husband is such a good sport even when he's tired after a busy week.

Christmas Eve Services

We invite you to join us for Christmas Eve services at 4 PM and 6 PM. The new church building is looking good. With thanks to my husband and many volunteers who have spent hours painting and cleaning. The services will be family-friendly with baby dedications and a children's choir.

Christmas with Friends

Our friends opened their home for a Christmas caroling night. It was fun to sing and share about our Christmas traditions. We should make this an annual tradition!

And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. Luke 2:6-7 ESV

Soup and Sound

I finally made it to my first Soup and Sound concert.  I read in the paper that my friend was singing. But first there was soup for lunch. Served graciously by the Shelton Methodist Church. I was blessed to be there today. Maybe I can catch the last one of the season next Friday.

In the Car

Sometimes I don't want to get out of the car. Not because it is cold or wet. I like listening to some Christian radio programs. Some of my favorites are James McDonald with Walk in the Word,  and the timeless J. Vernon McGee and Thru the Bible.

One Year Ago

One year ago we were looking for internet connections. Trying to stay warm. Figuring out where to put things and how to fit in a smaller home. How quickly one year goes by!

My Snow Philosophy

I try to not get too excited. Don't get up during the night and look out the window. This morning we just had a light dusting of snow. What will be, will be.

Pictured: My husband found the perfect tree with his birthday gift certificate in October.

"For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it. Brave the Cold

I don't think I could have braved the cold without my trusty hat from Sue. We walked all over downtown Seattle in the freezing temps. I even ventured outside on the ferry. Briefly.

Welcome to Our Place!

We have been with Mars Hill Olympia in the theater, middle school gym, and community college auditorium. Today was the first service in our very own building. With classrooms and space to visit before and after church. Plus we can now bring our coffee or tea into the service with us.

Join us at 9 AM or 11:15 AM Sunday mornings!

Anniversary Cruise

In honor of our 28th wedding anniversary we went on a cruise. Of sorts. We took the ferry to Seattle and spent the afternoon and evening with some of our favorite people. We had coffee and pastries at Storyville with our favorite employee, who had the day off today. Our son and his girlfriend surprised us by driving down from Bellingham. It was a chilly day but our hearts are warm!

Enjoy life with the wife whom you love, all the days of your vain life that he has given you under the sun, because that is your portion in life and in your toil at which you toil under the sun. Ecclesiastes 9:9 ESV

Kale Night

Love my local bargain store! I picked up kale on sale today. So tonight I blanched and froze eight pounds. I'll have to get some good recipes from my mom. She is the Queen of Kale.

Serves Well

Bless my husband for his service. He teaches the children every Sunday morning. And has stepped up to help paint the new building for our church. Can't wait to have our first service in our own building this Sunday!

Find Rest

I was encouraged this morning  at Bible Study Fellowship. I love how Jesus offers true rest for my soul. I need that.

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." Matthew 11:28-30 ESV

House Lights

There were cheers when the lights came on.  Thanks to my husband and brother-in-law for persevering to find the location of the tripped breaker. Who knew there was one more breaker box on the outside of our house?

Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Matthew 5:15-16 ESV

Just try to get an appointment with the vet on Black Friday. They are either closed or booked completely.

Our golden retriever stopped drinking and was in distress. Finally we got a good look in his mouth with a flashlight and discovered the reason. There was a thorny blackberry cane lodged crosswise in his throat. My older daughter was able to remove it. Problem solved. What a relief! For all of us.

Ready for New Space

That was our last Sunday at the community college. Our church is moving to a new building in downtown Olympia. It will be great to have our own space without having to set up and tear down. With classrooms and offices for mid-week activities. You can find us at:

819 Olympia Ave. NE, Olympia, WA 98504 at 9 AM and 11:15 AM.
