Off the Beaten Path

We went from 400 to zero. Last year we lived where the children flock for Halloween. Now we are on a dark street off the beaten path. My daughter had fun going with her friend and her mom, and making the rounds. To neighborhoods that hand out candy.

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: Ecclesiastes 3:1 ESV

Few in Number

I need a marketing campaign. To get the word out about parent prayer time at my daughter's school.

Meanwhile, a couple of us gather every Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 pm. We pray for the school, our community, and any personal concerns. It is a sweet time of prayer even if we are few in number.

Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. Pray then like this: "Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Matthew 6:8-10 ESV

Do Not Commit Adultery

Don't think this sermon doesn't apply to you. If you are not married, chances are you will be sometime in your lifetime. And if you are married, you need to safeguard your marriage. Pastor Mark Driscoll's sermon on the seventh commandment is worth your time.

"You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery.'But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart .Matthew 5:27-28 ESV

Welcome Gabriel!

We have been waiting to meet the little guy. Ever since we heard he was on his way. Today I got to meet the newest addition to our community group. He is nine days old. Perfect and healthy. Welcome Gabriel!

Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward. Psalm 127:3 ESV

Birthday Dinner Winner

And the winner is...drum roll dad! His guess was only one off the number of jelly beans in the jar.

With thanks to my mother-in-law for putting on a wonderful birthday dinner for my husband. Complete with the traditional guessing jar.

so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Ephesians 3:17-19 ESV

What a Father Wants

Just what a father wants for his birthday. To have all of his children call, message, or visit. My husband heard from both our sons. And today our daughter came from Seattle for a birthday brunch. My husband feels very loved.

"Honor your father and mother" (this is the first commandment with a promise),"that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land." Ephesians 6:2-3 ESV

Volley Girl

I'm going to miss those girls. And the coaches. This was the last year for my daughter to play volleyball at the Christian school. They had a great year with some rising stars for the future.

Prime Birthday

What happens if your husband's birthday falls on community group night? Celebrate, of course! With the people who were free to come tonight. We had a fun dinner, dessert, and discussion. And prayer time.

Happy Birthday to my best friend and husband!

Pictured: You can almost see the Birthday Boy in the group picture. And no, my daughter doesn't really have glasses.

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. Ephesians 4:29 ESV

Do Not Murder

It is loving to tell the truth, even if it is not popular. This last sermon was a heavy one. The sixth commandment is about honoring life because it is God-given. Pastor Mark Driscoll tackled difficult topics like capital punishment, war, and abortion. As always, I would be glad to talk about these sermons or pray with someone.

"You have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.' Matthew 5:21 ESV

Tuesday Morning Friends

I love my mid-week women's Bible study. We read the Bible, have a lesson based on the sermon topic--currently the Ten Commandments, pray, and fellowship. I wish more of my friends were free to come on Tuesday morning.

Last Volley

I am so proud of our girls. Both JV and Varsity girls played hard, never gave up, and had great sportsmanship all season. They played their final games today. I will miss watching my daughter and friends play volleyball.

New Church Home

We are moving to a new home. No, not us. Our church. Since we started attending Mars Hill Olympia, we have been in a theater, middle school, and currently a community college. Today they announced the new location. In a church building in downtown Olympia. It will be great to have a permanent location with classroom space, midweek opportunities, and no more tear-down and set-up time!

to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, Ephesians 4:12-13 ESV

New Place for Tea

I love grand openings. New businesses in town. And free cupcakes. It was fun to visit the new tea shop and bakery with my mother-in-law and daughter today.

Coffee at Home

I have been on a mission to find a new French press coffee maker. Checked and rechecked my regular sources. And what did I find behind the cereal on the pantry shelf? The French press I bought at a garage sale and stashed away. Perfect for morning coffee with Bible study.

Keeping it Real

In the spirit of keeping it real, I took a before picture of my dining room table. All covered with paperwork and projects. I scooped everything up before we hosted community group tonight. That's how I roll.

Morning with Three-Year-Olds

I got a turn wearing the tiara. Drank multiple cups of invisible tea. Ate pretend meals. Stood on the tape line. Marched in a circle. Listened to a Bible story. Sang a couple hymns. Handed out snacks. Watched children play outside.

It was my discussion group's turn to help with the children's program at Bible Study Fellowship. And spent the morning with eighteen delightful and active three-year-olds.

but Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven." Matthew 19:14 ESV

Dusk Love

I love the picture texts from my husband. Like today's dusk picture from the lake by where he works.

Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and everything that moves in them. Psalm 69:34 ESV

Honor Your Father and Mother

This last sermon could be difficult for some people. How do you honor your father and mother if they were not honorable? That is not an issue for me. I have godly parents who have been kind and loving my whole life. But there is something for all of us to learn in this sermon on the 5th commandment. You can listen online here:

All About Jesus for 17 Years

Happy 17th birthday to our church! Mars Hill Church started as a few people in a living room. Now we are in 14 locations in three states. And growing.

I appreciate the solid Bible teaching and commitment to discipleship.

"Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Matthew 5:10-12 ESV

Morning Quiet

It's great when people sleep in on the weekend. Then I have some early morning quiet time. All to myself. Perfect for doing my Bible study, throwing in a load of laundry, washing dishes, and baking an egg dish for a women's breakfast meeting. All before 8:30 am.

Field Trip Dad

I gave myself permission to miss the field trip. My daughter and schoolmates went on an educational tour of the local PUD#3. Bless my husband for driving a car filled with thirteen-year-old girls!

Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. 1 Peter 3:8 ESV

Fill the Stands

We did our part to fill the stands. Two families from our community group came. Plus our older daughter drove all the way from Seattle. (And back the same night.) All to cheer for our youngest and her scrappy, won't-give-up volleyball team!

Baby Cuts

I have a new plan. See if I can make some progress with decluttering. I am going to start with baby cuts. Make the little cuts that don't hurt too much. Like getting rid of the "someday" reading pile. Starting with my free magazine stash. I will load them in the trunk right now to take to the library. I can do that.

Catch Up

I was a little behind on my homework this week. No worries. I can pack my Bible Study Fellowship lesson and Bible. And catch up in the car before the volleyball games.

But he answered, "It is written, "'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'" Matthew 4:4 ESV

Tomato Love

My mom asked if I wanted some tomatoes. Fresh from her garden. Don't mind if I do!

Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. Hebrews 13:16 ESV

Remember the Sabbath

How does a Christian remember the Sabbath today? Is that a law to follow today? Good questions. Pastor Mark came to the fourth commandment today. His sermon was very helpful and practical. Listen for yourself at:

"Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. Exodus 20:8-11 ESV

Time for Dinner

It's always good to have dinner with my in-laws. Glad we could make time before my daughter left town.

Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever! Psalm 118:29 ESV

Home for the Weekend

I added a few things to my shopping list: green bananas, avocados, and low-fat milk. And dusted off my coffee maker. It's always good to have my older daughter home for the weekend!

And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. Colossians 3:14 ESV

Empty Chairs

I still see empty chairs. Think of the people who are no longer with us. Especially at the volleyball games. My friend was so faithful to come cheer for her daughter.

Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints. Psalm 116:15 ESV

Two of Us

I was prepared to pray alone. I didn't know if any other parents would show up. But one friend did. So there were two of us for Wednesday afternoon parent prayer time. It's a start.

Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. Colossians 4:2 ESV

Great Coffee

I miss having my daughter home. I can't wait to go see her and have a great cup of coffee at Storyville Coffee at Pike Place Market. They opened to the public today.

And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Colossians 3:15 ESV
