Move Over Store-Bought

I have been wanting to make homemade hummus. So I bought tahini for the first time. And selected a simple recipe in The Quick Recipe by the editors of Cook's Illustrated. We have a winner!

Pictured: Creamy hummus with pine nuts and paprika.

Makes about 2 cups

1 (15 ounce) can chickpeas, drained, rinsed, and toweled dry
1 medium clove garlic, minced
3/4 tsp. salt
pinch cayenne pepper (don't have this)
3 Tbs. juice from 1 large lemon
1/4 cup tahini
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1/4 cup water (forgot this, but it still worked)
Process all the ingredients in a food processor, until smooth, about 40 seconds. Transfer to a serving bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and chill about 30 minutes. Can be refrigerated for up to 2 days.)

Count on Her

Who is always up for a cup of coffee? Or tea? Or spending time with me and my family? My mother-in-law and dear friend, that's who.

Happy Birthday Linda!

Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: "Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all." Proverbs 31:28-29 ESV

Birthday Blessings

Another May birthday. Happy Birthday to our good friend, Lorenzo! He has blessed us with his spiritual leadership and friendship.

Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice! Seek the LORD and his strength; seek his presence continually! Psalm 105:3-4 ESV

On the Dash

Even my daughter's car knows it is my brother-in-law's birthday. Just kidding. But I am thinking about him today. I'm glad their family will be coming up next month!

May the LORD give strength to his people! May the LORD bless his people with peace! Psalm 29:11 ESV

Thanks for the Sacrifices!

I am blessed to still have my war heroes. My grandfather served during World War 2 and is still with us at age 92. My cousins served faithfully in Iraq and Afghanistan. I appreciate the sacrifices made for our country!

For the LORD is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations. Psalm 100:5 ESV

Jesus' Mission

I was sad to have the sermon series in Ephesians end. Although I can rewatch any sermon I want. But today's opening sermon in the Acts series was powerful. I'm excited to learn about Jesus' mission and what it means to be empowered by the Holy Spirit.

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."Acts 1:8 ESV

All Grown Up

That was the most tender giving away I've seen. The father of the bride held his daughter close. One last time before shaking hands with the groom.

It was fun to be at the wedding of our friends' daughter, who grew up with my daughter.

Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 1 Corinthians 13:7 ESV

Moving Out

So things didn't work out. Our first tenants need to find different housing that works better for their family. They are in the process of moving out.

We are gearing up for another round of ads, phone calls, and texts. We pray for God to provide the right tenants and a smooth transition.

Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love, for in you I trust. Make me know the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul. Psalm 143:8 ESV

Love Abiding

I love hearing the women sing on Wednesday mornings. And being reminded of the timeless truths in the old hymns. I will miss that this summer. Can't wait for Bible Study Fellowship to start up in September.

From yesterday's song, In Heavenly Love Abiding:

In heav’nly love abiding,
No change my heart shall fear;
And safe in such confiding,
For nothing changes here.
The storm may roar without me,
My heart may low be laid,
But God is round about me,
And can I be dismayed?

If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. John 15:10 ESV

Birthday Cupcakes

All day I wondered about the significance of today's date. But then my little friend came for tutoring and he told me it is his birthday. Of course. Seven years ago I was there when he entered the world.

I whipped up some cupcakes while my daughter helped him with reading. I am happy to do that.

Most of the time it is a blessing. We are not missing much by not having cable television. But during times like this with the Oklahoma tornadoes, I feel very disconnected from what is going on. I only get bits and pieces online. Thankfully our God is not disconnected and unaware.

For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him. He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God. Psalm 62:5-7 ESV

My friend asked when I was starting the South Beach Diet again. Soon. I need to make a menu and shopping list. I can do that. Maybe I can find a low-carb muffin recipe too.

I am Victorious

Now that was a powerful sermon. We wrapped up the last of the Ephesians series today. Mark Driscoll addressed the war that we are in. We need to know our King. We need to know and use our weapons.

Quotes from today:
Are you sleeping with your boots on?
All God asks you to do is what you cannot do. How do you do it? By His power.

If you only watch or listen to one sermon this series, make it this one!

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Ephesians 6:10-13 ESV

Special Day

Today is special to me. Not because it is the day Mt. St. Helen's blew. I was blessed with a baby sister on this day.

Now we are grown up with kids of our own. And I appreciate her all the more! She is one of my heroes.

That was a fun evening. Spaghetti dinner and a concert. Put on by Mason County Christian School as a fundraiser for next year's trip to Washington D.C.

The students worked hard as servers and then many were in the choir. My favorite song was, "Remind me who I am." They had cardboard signs with various emotions, like confused, angry, overlooked, etc. But they all turned them over to reveal their true identity in Christ: Beloved.

Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. 1 John 3:2 ESV

Found Bill

It was easy to find "Little Bill." When he was life-sized. We had fun at the booth for Coffee News and their popular "Find Little Bill" contest at the local Bite of Shelton Business Expo today.

Lunch and Playtime

Today I got to spend time with eight little friends. Ten if you include the make-believe puppy and kitten. Plus three other adult volunteers from Bible Study Fellowship. So that the children's workers with children could attend a live lecture today. I had a tea party and got my hair done. With invisible tea and hair products.

You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. Deuteronomy 6:7 ESV

Field Trip to Seattle

What's almost as good as going to the international district? On a seventh and eighth grade field trip? Sending your older daughter with your younger daughter.

Only a Few

I never know what the Bible reading will be for the day. When I visit my friend in the assisted living home. I liked today's passage from 1 Samuel where Jonathan bravely takes on the enemy. He knows that God can work through many or only a few. Like the couple of us that pray on Monday mornings at the Christian School.

Jonathan said to the young man who carried his armor, "Come, let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised. It may be that the LORD will work for us, for nothing can hinder the LORD from saving by many or by few." 1 Samuel 14:6 ESV

Bagel Family

How many Mother's Days will I be surprised? I had no clue my son was coming home for the weekend. But I did know I would get to have dinner with my parents and my in-laws. Happy Mother's Day to me!

My older daughter made me an offer I couldn't refuse. Meet up with her on her break. And let her buy me coffee with her gift card. Works for me!

There were only two of us. So we had lots of time to pray. So, Tuesday Morning Bible Study Ladies, you were prayed for today!

Meet the Fam

We made it a family weekend. And introduced my son's girlfriend to the family. My side and my husband's side. We drove to Portland to surprise my sister-in-law for her birthday (that ends in zero). We spent the night and went to my sister's farm. Can't wait for my other sister and family to come up from California.

Missing One

I downloaded pictures from my camera and found a great one from our Easter hike to the waterfall. I am thankful for my children and love how each one is turning out.

Back to Genesis

I asked my new friend from church if she had heard of Bible Study Fellowship. "You mean, BSF?" That's a yes. She started the Genesis study in Shanghai before they moved here. She is delighted to come with me for the last couple weeks of Genesis. And signed up for the Matthew study starting in September.

Triathlon Today

And away they went. The 4th-8th graders at the Christian School did a triathlon today. Biked several miles, walked or ran at the high school track, played frisbee golf (on the disc golf course), and biked back to the school. My seventh grader enjoyed having her older sister along for the ride.

Booster seat for my first grade friend. Check. Seat belts for mom and daughter. Check. Current registration. Check. Proof of insurance. Check. Going speed limit down the hill into town. Oops. First ticket ever. Bummer.
