Coming and Going

The year 2013 has been characterized by comings and goings. We left the house we built and moved into a rental across town. Our adult children come and go. So we savor the times we are all together. Like last weekend.

Great to have our oldest home from California for the week.

Park it

My son drove us all around downtown Seattle looking for a parking spot. My son's girlfriend also drove all over looking for a spot. Later we met up. And found out we parked in the same garage, on the same floor, and right across the way. Without any coordination. What are the odds?

Men in Beards

I am surrounded by men in beards. At home these days and at church. It's great to have both sons home for a couple days.

Coffee Christmas

We went straight from the airport to my daughter's workplace. And had all four children and one girlfriend in one place. (Day after) Christmas with the fam!

Christmas Dinner Love

My mom knows how to serve up a wonderful meal. With all the trimmings, as they say. All I did was show up with the turkey and make the gravy. I wish I had her energy and skill to pull it all together.

Pictured: My mom and I last Sunday. I didn't get any pictures of the Christmas dinner. Too busy enjoying the food and fellowship!

Heart Fiesta

I can feel the love. My mother-in-law knows what I like. Fiestaware dishes. But I didn't know they made a heart-shaped bowl. Beautiful. And it's for me!

Christmas 2013

It is a gift to have time with family. We made the rounds. From breakfast at my in-laws' to dinner at my parents'. And time in the evening with my sister and family.

Christmas Eve Service

It was great to attend the Christmas Eve service in our new building. With three out of four children with us.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. Morning Walk

My husband didn't have to go in to work until noon. Which left time for a morning walk. Not too cold, not too wet. Works for me.

Chinese Christmas

Today I got to hear the Christmas story in English and Chinese. Thanks to my dad preaching at the Olympia Chinese Christian Church. My son, his girlfriend, and her sister also joined us. It was a cultural experience!

My dad did an outstanding job and my mom was a great assistant with the music and the slides.

Pictured: Visiting with my mom after Chinese church.

And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, "Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Christmas Program Love

We know exactly what to expect at these programs. Cute little kids. Heart-felt songs. The Christmas story memorized and performed. With
proud parents and grandparents. Including us.

Our youngest did a great job in the 7th and 8th grade play. It's hard to believe this was her last Christmas program at the Christian School!

Day to Share

We had to share one vehicle this morning. So we teamed up and took my daughter to her Christmas program practice. And dropped my husband off at work. But first we stopped for a breakfast date in the hospital basement. Works for us!

How to Cook Everything

I don't like to loan out books. I'd much rather give them away. Like my new favorite cookbook, How to Cook Everything by Mark Bittman. I gave it to my daughter. And kept my eyes peeled for a replacement. Today I found one at the thrift store. It's not the latest edition, but if I find a newer one, I can give this one away.

Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. Hebrews 13:16 ESV

My husband comes home from work and leaves again. He keeps running to Olympia to help with our new church building. Bless his heart.

Here is more information about our church. My husband is not pictured in the photos, but you can see the scope of the project.

The party was for a special little friend. (Can't believe our community group baby is three this week!) But I think the guests had lots of fun too. I love how my husband is such a good sport even when he's tired after a busy week.

Christmas with Friends

Our friends opened their home for a Christmas caroling night. It was fun to sing and share about our Christmas traditions. We should make this an annual tradition!

Soup and Sound

I finally made it to my first Soup and Sound concert.  I read in the paper that my friend was singing. But first there was soup for lunch. Served graciously by the Shelton Methodist Church. I was blessed to be there today. Maybe I can catch the last one of the season next Friday.

My Snow Philosophy

I try to not get too excited. Don't get up during the night and look out the window. This morning we just had a light dusting of snow. What will be, will be.

Anniversary Cruise

In honor of our 28th wedding anniversary we went on a cruise. Of sorts. We took the ferry to Seattle and spent the afternoon and evening with some of our favorite people. We had coffee and pastries at Storyville with our favorite employee, who had the day off today. Our son and his girlfriend surprised us by driving down from Bellingham. It was a chilly day but our hearts are warm!

Find Rest

I was encouraged this morning  at Bible Study Fellowship. I love how Jesus offers true rest for my soul. I need that.

House Lights

There were cheers when the lights came on.  Thanks to my husband and brother-in-law for persevering to find the location of the tripped breaker. Who knew there was one more breaker box on the outside of our house?

Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Matthew 5:15-16 ESV

Relief

Just try to get an appointment with the vet on Black Friday. They are either closed or booked completely.

Our golden retriever stopped drinking and was in distress. Finally we got a good look in his mouth with a flashlight and discovered the reason. There was a thorny blackberry cane lodged crosswise in his throat. My older daughter was able to remove it. Problem solved. What a relief! For all of us.

How Have You Loved Us

I was sad to have the series end. Not that I want more commandments to follow. But the new series on the book of Malachi is good. Settles some of the basic issues of who God is and what He is like. I appreciate how Pastor Mark Driscoll gives the back story, going back to Jacob and Esau.

Count Down

Some are counting down until Thanksgiving or Christmas. My count down to the end of 8th grade has begun. Yesterday was one of the last outings to Skateland with my daughter's school. How many treks have we made since kindergarten? Shelled out a couple bucks at the door. Watched the kids and intrepid parents skate. And heard Mr. E. lead the games and chicken dance.

Two Nights in a Row

We weren't sure what night worked best. So we hosted special community group dinners on two nights this week. Tonight's ham in the slow cooker was perfectly done. The baked salmon took a little longer than I planned for. But it all came together. With plenty of food and desserts for 18 people.

And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, Acts 2:46 ESV

More to Come

We are practicing up for Thanksgiving. I don't mean stuffing ourselves. Arranging all the chairs. Inviting community group people and other friends. Enjoying good food and fellowship. We had 15 people here tonight and would have gladly made room for more.

Prayer in the Afternoon

I like having Bible Study Fellowship on Wednesday morning. Then I can share something at parent prayer time in the afternoon. Like today I read Matthew 9:2 about how the friends brought the paralytic to Jesus. We can bring our friends and concerns to Jesus. Jesus hears our prayers and responds.

And behold, some people brought to him a paralytic, lying on a bed. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven." Matthew 9:2 ESV

Back in the Day

It's fun to look back through old photos. And remember how my kids endured family photos. Our living room wall was green. I used to wear denim jumpers. We had a futon. I still have the afghan my Gramma made when I graduated from high school. Back in the day.

Do Not Covet

We wrapped up the Ten Commandments sermons today. The 10th commandment gets at heart issues. Coveting, or wanting something that isn't mine, can lead to breaking the other commandments. The antidote to coveting is contentment.

But ultimately it comes down to trust. Do I trust that God has my best interests at heart? And His rules are to protect me.

Saturday Breakfast

Maybe this could be our new tradition. Breakfast on Saturdays with the in-laws. I could get used to that. Crispy buckwheat waffles, eggs, bacon, and coffee. My mother-in-law takes good care of us.

Faith of Friends

I love the story of the paralytic and his friends. Jesus responded to their faith. Friends can help bring us to Jesus. And be instrumental in healing. I want to be that kind of friend, too.

And behold, some people brought to him a paralytic, lying on a bed. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven." Matthew 9:2 ESV

Time for Cheesecake

I usually spend all Thursday afternoon catching up on housework. So we are ready to host community group.

But I was ahead of the game this week. So I had extra time to cook and bake. Along with a main dish, I baked a cheesecake. I used low-fat cream cheese and plain Greek yogurt. It turned out great. And disappeared.

Great Calm

I find encouragement every week. I love studying God's Word at Bible Study Fellowship. Today we read about Jesus' authority over the storm at sea. He brings calm in the storms. Great calm. We all need that.

And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. And they went and woke him, saying, "Save us, Lord; we are perishing." And he said to them, "Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?" Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. Matthew 8:23-26 ESV

My Favorite Sailor

Today is a good day to re-read my grampa's book of poems. He started writing poems in the Navy during World War 2. While others were gambling or playing cards, he was writing bits of poetry on scraps of paper. He wrote love poems to my gramma, poems for his two (at that time) young children, and poems about the sea, sunsets, and Scripture.

He continued to write poems until his stroke a few years ago.

At age 92, my grampa is my favorite sailor and my hero.

Thank you for your service to your country and faithful love for your family, including your wife of 72 years.

For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, Titus 2:11-13 ESV

Do Not Lie

You might think you are doing a good job of avoiding the big sins. But, as Pastor Mark explained today, sin is like water. It seeps into cracks and finds the low spots. Sin settles in so it can erode. You might be breaking the 9th commandment without thinking about it. Listen for yourself and be convicted.

Raise Your Card

My husband has always wanted to place a bid at an auction. Tonight he got his chance to raise his card and donate money to a good cause. He bought a "death by chocolate" cake in support of Mason County Christian School.

My favorite highlight was listening to the 4th and 5th grade choir sing their hearts out.

Special Guests

We were honored to have special guests at community group. It was the Little Guy's debut, at not even three weeks old. Plus my sister and her family joined us. Sunday Plans

Start planning your Sunday now. We are going to two services this week: 9 AM and 11:15 AM. You will probably find me at the later service. You will find my husband wearing a blue shirt and working with the children in the later service.

We meet on the beautiful campus of South Puget Sound Community College. For now.

That's one way to get motivated to get out of bed on a dark morning. Remember that you didn't put the garbage and recycling out. Plus I was on duty to teach algebra first thing this morning. On the upside, there was a spectacular sunrise on the way to my daughter's school.

Pictured: I didn't capture the sunrise on camera, but the trees are beautiful this time of year.

Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. Psalm 90:14 ESV

Off the Beaten Path

We went from 400 to zero. Last year we lived where the children flock for Halloween. Now we are on a dark street off the beaten path. My daughter had fun going with her friend and her mom, and making the rounds. To neighborhoods that hand out candy.

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: Ecclesiastes 3:1 ESV

Few in Number

I need a marketing campaign. To get the word out about parent prayer time at my daughter's school.

Meanwhile, a couple of us gather every Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 pm. We pray for the school, our community, and any personal concerns. It is a sweet time of prayer even if we are few in number.

Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. Pray then like this: "Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Matthew 6:8-10 ESV

Do Not Commit Adultery

Don't think this sermon doesn't apply to you. If you are not married, chances are you will be sometime in your lifetime. And if you are married, you need to safeguard your marriage. Pastor Mark Driscoll's sermon on the seventh commandment is worth your time.

Welcome Gabriel!

We have been waiting to meet the little guy. Ever since we heard he was on his way. Today I got to meet the newest addition to our community group. He is nine days old. Perfect and healthy. Welcome Gabriel!

Birthday Dinner Winner

And the winner is...drum roll please...my dad! His guess was only one off the number of jelly beans in the jar.

With thanks to my mother-in-law for putting on a wonderful birthday dinner for my husband. Complete with the traditional guessing jar.

Pictured: My parents. Not pictured: The rest of the dinner party: my in-laws, husband, and daughter.

so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Ephesians 3:17-19 ESV
