Hugs All Around

My grandparents have not changed. They still shower the grandchildren with love. And great-grandchildren. Like my smiley little niece who visited yesterday along with her three big sisters.

But Jesus called them to him, saying, "Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Luke 18:16 ESV

Smiles All Around

I'm always up for sister time. And a visit with my four nieces. Thanks to my parents who invited us to dinner while my sister was in town.

Communion Together

I grew up in churches that had monthly communion. Now we take communion every Sunday. It is a very precious time to walk forward with my husband and daughter, dip bread in wine or juice, and remember what Jesus has done for us. I love how my husband prays with me before we take communion together.

and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, "This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me." In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me." 1 Corinthians 11:24-25 ESV

Hope for the Hurting

Mark Driscoll said this was the one sermon he didn't want to preach. But he did. Message #7 in the Real Marriage series deals with sexual assault, which affects so many women and men. Jesus died to take care of all our sins. The sins we've committed and the ones committed against us. There is hope and healing.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:1-2 ESV

Happy Birthday Friend!

There was a lot of history represented tonight. Not just because our friend is celebrating a special birthday. We were with friends we made when we moved here 20 years ago. We watched our children grow up. Gone through good times and hard times. Together.

Overnighter

It was a spur-of-the-moment invitation. How about my youngest spend the night after community group? Girl time for her with the leader's wife; date night for us. We can do that.

Pictured: My daughter and our beloved "community group baby."

Our hope for you is unshaken, for we know that as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in our comfort. 2 Corinthians 1:7 ESV

Share Our Lives

I probably say the same thing every Thursday night. I love our community group! We share a meal, talk, laugh, discuss what God is teaching us, and pray together. Share our lives. I thank God for each person in our group.

Finally, brothers, rejoice. Aim for restoration, comfort one another, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you. 2 Corinthians 13:11 ESV

Glad I Went

I could have stayed home. My regular comrades weren't attending Bible Study Fellowship. But I woke up early and finished my lesson. My husband was free to stay with our daughter who is on mid-winter break. I am glad I went. We had good discussion time and lecture. As always.

For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 2 Corinthians 4:6 ESV

Got Flax?

I used up my big container of ground flax. No problem, I can grind my own. With my dedicated coffee grinder used for spices. Perfect for adding to my steel-cut oats or plain Greek yogurt. With apologizes to those who thought I was grinding coffee beans and making coffee.

She seeks wool and flax, and works with willing hands. Proverbs 31:13 ESV

Wrapped up the Weekend

And so ends the weekend. We took the kids up to Tukwila to meet their friend who was going the rest of the way north to Bellingham.

Too bad I didn't have enough leftover oatmeal or time to make muffins for the road trip. But my send-off homemade vegetarian potsticker lunch was a hit.

Family in Church

Sundays with the family are my favorite. I got to attend church with three of my children today.

But we your people, the sheep of your pasture, will give thanks to you forever; from generation to generation we will recount your praise. Psalm 79:13 ESV

Family Times

I love family weekends. With kids home. Always good to have our daughter and son home from Bellingham. Maybe we can get a family picture with five of us tomorrow.

We sure miss our oldest son who lives in California!

Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. 1 Peter 3:8 ESV

Stay on Task

I hate to pass up a sale. Half off books at our local Goodwill today and tomorrow. That means I could consider purchasing a hardback book. But if I went in to look at books, I would check for the card game on my wish list: Quiddler. And then I would walk through the kitchen aisle and look for a muffin pan I saw in a magazine. And so on. But I have errands so I will stay on task and avoid distraction.

Besides, I am not hurting for books. I bought a book on the library sale shelf and downloaded two free books for my Kindle.

Good Eats at Community Group

My friend and I did not coordinate our efforts. But we were on the same wavelength. I made taco soup with black beans. She made chili with pinto beans. They blended perfectly. Others brought rice, meatballs, and Mexican lasagna. What a feast at our community group potluck.

Stable is Good

My neurologist called to give me the results from my brain MRI. Stable. No new lesions. That's exactly what we hope and pray for. Looks like my weekly injections are working. I thank God for giving me a season of stable health.

Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, Psalm 103:2-4 ESV

Very Loved

I appreciate the little things. Many acts of kindness. Hot cups of tea. Preparing tasty and nutritious meals. Or taking the day off work to take me to my MRI. So I don't need anything fancy for Valentine's Day.

But I did get an amazing gift this year: a Kindle Fire. Good thing my daughter can help me navigate a touch screen.

Taking Care of Baby

Who's going to take care of the baby? When the husband goes to work and the mom and grandma are at a women's retreat? My husband and daughter that's who! They spent the night at our community group leader's home so they could be on duty early in the morning.

Pictured: I turned on my cell phone at the retreat and received this photo text.

Taking out the Trash

Do you want your marriage to get better or get bitter? Today's sermon was number 5 in the marriage series by Mark Driscoll. It was about "Taking Out the Trash." Dealing with repentance of sin and forgiveness. How to fight to glory of God and how not to fight. What forgiveness is and isn't. Like so many sermons from Mark Driscoll, this one would be good to watch (or listen to) even if you didn't watch the ones before or after.

Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil. Ephesians 4:25-27 ESV

Boxcar Women

My husband packed my bags and sent me on my way. It was a night away with the ladies. The first Mars Hill Olympia women's retreat was just what you would expect. Great Bible teaching, meaningful discussions with roommates, and simple but beautiful touches.

Hello Phase Two

We made it through phase one. In South Beach Diet-speak. My husband and I are committed to eating healthy and losing weight. This plan gives us the structure we needed. I don't want to say "diet" because it is a lifestyle.

The best part is we are doing it together.

But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified. 1 Corinthians 9:27 ESV

Alone Time

I drove to Bible Study Fellowship by myself. On my lunch break I ate an apple chicken salad at Wendy's. By myself. But that's okay. I walked next door to buy myself a cup of coffee. And bought a cup of coffee for a friend I ran into. Before we both went to the BSF seminar about Becoming a Servant of God.

For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ. Galatians 1:10 ESV

She has Spirit

It was sensory overload when I went to school today. Teachers and students were decked out in mismatched clothes. And crazy hair. My sixth grader participated in Spirit Week. And still looked cute.

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, Colossians 3:23 ESV

Hold the Door

I didn't think it was that big of a deal. I held the door open for a woman using a walker and her daughter at the medical offices building. They said that people hardly ever stop to help. But I did do them a big favor when I directed them away from the men's restroom. And took them around the corner to the women's restroom.

For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." Galatians 5:14 ESV

The Respectful Wife

Now it's my turn. In the hot seat. Today's sermon was directed at the women in the audience, especially wives. How am I doing at respecting my husband? With my head, heart, and hands?

What do I think about my husband?
How do I feel about my husband?
What do I do for my husband?

http://marshill.com/media/real-marriage/the-respectful-wife

However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. Ephesians 5:33 ESV

No More Cookies

The cookie jar is empty. That's because the cookie baker moved her operation down south for the winter. I miss cookies. And I miss my mother-in-law!

Pictured: My mother-in-law's cookie jar.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23 ESV

Courageous

Last Sunday's sermon about men and marriage went right along with the movie we watched tonight. Courageous is a powerful story about men stepping up. I recommend it. Warning: it is a little intense for sensitive types. Like me. Have a hankie ready.

Men and Women

We split up after dinner. Men in the guest room. Women in the living room. And had great discussions about Real Marriage. I love our community group.

Coffee in the Bag

I forgot how much I enjoyed my morning coffee. With my Bible Study Fellowship buddies. We had time to stop before class today. It's always good to catch up and encourage each other.

But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God. Acts 20:24 ESV
