Reflecting about "Whenever"

I'm reading about the Israelites in the desert. I probably would have been one of the complainers. At least in my heart.  Not about leaving Egypt. Or about coming up with new recipes for manna. But the uncertainty of when the cloud would lift and it was time to pack up and move on. It could be days, weeks, or months. They had to trust God's leading and His perfect timing. I need to do that too.

And whenever the cloud lifted from over the tent, after that the people of Israel set out, and in the place where the cloud settled down, there the people of Israel camped. At the command of the LORD the people of Israel set out, and at the command of the LORD they camped. As long as the cloud rested over the tabernacle, they remained in camp. Numbers 9:17-18 ESV

Love my Mother-in-Law!

Happy birthday to my dear, sweet mother-in-law! It was fun to host dinner for my in-laws and my parents. We had two of our children here and one on speaker phone.

Pictured: I love this picture of my husband and his mom, taken last year.

Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: "Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all." Proverbs 31:28-29 ESV

Are you Tolerant?

Are you tolerant? More tolerant than God? Pastor Mark Driscoll doesn't hold back in the sixth sermon in the Revelation series.

Christianity begins with tolerance and moves to repentance and change. If we repent of our sin (including sexual immorality and sinful tolerance), we will be rewarded. If we do not, there will be justice in judgment.

"'I know your works, your love and faith and service and patient endurance, and that your latter works exceed the first. But I have this against you, that you tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess and is teaching and seducing my servants to practice sexual immorality and to eat food sacrificed to idols. Revelation 2:19-20 ESV

Memorial Day 2012

God bless the men and women who have served our country so faithfully. Past and present. Including my grandparents to my generation and now the next generation. You do us proud.

But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them ever sing for joy, and spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may exult in you. Psalm 5:11 ESV

Mars Hill New Location

Our church is growing up. Moving from a middle school to a community college. We will have more seats and classrooms for children's ministry. So if you're thinking of visiting Mars Hill Olympia, come to South Puget Sound Community College. In the Minnaert Center. We will have one service at 10 am, starting June 3rd.

So the churches were strengthened in the faith, and they increased in numbers daily. Acts 16:5 ESV

Ready to Go

No more excuses. I had a walking partner. I borrowed a stroller so I could push one of my neighbor's little ones around the loop. This morning's weather was good. And there she was, at my door. Ready to go.

but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:31 ESV

Joy Ride

My son is at work. Let's take his new (to him) sports car for a joy ride!

Our younger son is home to work for the summer. And just bought his first car. The car of his dreams

Focus on God's Word

There is a reason why we don't talk about churches or denominations. Until the last day of Bible Study Fellowship. We heard the list of 92 churches represented in my class this year. I love how the focus is on studying God's Word. Without distractions. I'm going to miss it this summer.

Your hands have made and fashioned me; give me understanding that I may learn your commandments. Psalm 119:73 ESV

Teamwork on Dinner

I started it. I put potatoes in the oven. He came home from teaching kindergarten and grilled the steak. That's teamwork on dinner. Works for me!

Better is a dinner of herbs where love is than a fattened ox and hatred with it. Proverbs 15:17 ESV

Drive All the Way

We were part-way there. Why not drive all the way to Bellingham and see our daughter? On the spur-of-the moment. Have dinner and drive home. We got home in the wee hours. But it was worth it.

Wait for Friends

I don't mind waiting for friends. While they go to doctors' appointments. One this morning and one this afternoon. Gives me time to think. Gather my thoughts. And today, organize one year of homework for Bible Study Fellowship.

So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90:12 ESV

Case Study in Apostasy

What is apostasy? Professing faith but not practicing it. Just like the church in Pergamum. You can watch, listen, or read the transcript of Pastor Mark Driscoll's sermon from Revelation 2.

And so the key to avoiding apostasy is always coming back to the Word of God, and hearing what God would say through the Scriptures, and he likens it here to a sword for battle. And so you and I need to know, when we hear a lie, we need to take it to the Scripture for the truth. When we’re tempted to sin, we need to go to the Bible for instruction. When we’ve said or done something wrong, we go to the Bible for correction. It’s the weapon by which God gives us spiritual victory.

But I have a few things against you: you have some there who hold the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, so that they might eat food sacrificed to idols and practice sexual immorality. Revelation 2: 14 ESV

She Blesses Me

She inspires me. Encourages me. Speaks the truth. With love. And blesses all who know her.

Happy Birthday to my good friend and BSF buddy!

Happy Birthday Baby

She will always be my baby sister. And very dear to me. No matter how old we get.

Happy Birthday to one of my best friends.

Sixth Grade Mothers' Tea

Sixth grade young men were on duty. I was escorted from my car to the school to the decorated table. Then I was graciously served tea and strawberry shortcake. With a informational lecture on the history of tea.

I loved my daughter's poem and the other sixth graders' poems. All in honor of mothers and one grandmother.

He will tend his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms; he will carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young. Isaiah 40:11 ESV

Little One

My sister and her family have returned to Oregon. But I'm still looking at the photos. I especially enjoyed the impromptu lunch and coffee before they hit the road.

Pictured: Holding my youngest niece.

"Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea. Matthew 18:5-6 ESV

Little Dolls

I have a reputation. My little friends know I might have books for them. But I think my nieces liked the little dolls I gave them.

If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" Luke 11:13 ESV

Lake Family Dinner

It was perfect weather for dinner at the lake. My parents graciously hosted dinner for the extended family, including my aunt and uncle from Texas. My sister and family came from Oregon. It was nice to see my great-aunt and some of my mom's cousins.

Booth of Cousins

Just when I thought the weekend couldn't get any better, it did. We intercepted my sister and family on their way to my parents' place. In time to see my older daughter before she headed north.

Pictured: How many cousins can you fit in a booth at a bagel place?

Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience,  Colossians 3:12 ESV

Comfort Food Love

I call that comfort food. I love my mom's cooking. She made amazing kung pao tofu and chicken for our family dinner tonight. Nice to have my parents, in-laws, and three of our four children together. Plus a visit from my uncle and aunt.

One More

I was happy to have two children in the house. And totally shocked to have one more show up. My daughter took three buses, a ferry, and a car to get home from Bellingham. For Mother's Day weekend.

On the Mountain

The sixth graders and parents had a beautiful day on the mountain. It was the Mt. Rainier field trip, complete with snowshoeing and outdoor education. On 15 feet of snow.

Ten Years Ago

Ten years ago I was one of the first people to welcome a baby girl into the world. She grew up to be a sweet little friend for my daughter. With a special place in my heart.

Happy 10th birthday to my little neighbor!

Blessed Me

I wasn't even thinking about next Sunday. But my husband blessed me with a beautiful hanging basket and did some work in the back yard.

Happy Mother's Day to me!

On Location in Turkey

Today's sermon was preached on location. And translated. We watched the video of Mark Driscoll preaching in Turkey, in the present-day setting of Smyrna. I appreciate the timeless encouragement to not be afraid because Jesus is with me.

"And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write: 'The words of the first and the last, who died and came to life." 'I know your tribulation and your poverty (but you are rich) and the slander of those who say that they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan. Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life. Revelation 2:8-10 ESV

Garden Love

Where is my husband? When he's not subbing in a local grade school? He is working on a garden project for my grandparents.

Tulip Love

Time to change the background. On my computer screen. My son has been throwing a snow ball for months. I love my son's photo of my daughter in the tulip field.

Photo: Used by permission from the photographer and the subject. All I did to put it on my background was right-click on the photo on Facebook and set as desktop background.

The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. Isaiah 40:8 ESV

Coffee, Tea and Fellowship

How about inviting women over for coffee, tea and snacks? With gluten-free and low-carb options. Babies and children welcome. See who shows up. Neighbors and former neighbors. Community group friends. My mother-in-law. Seven adults and five little ones.

Everyday Conflict in May

I watch for the free downloads of the month. This month's free audio book is by my favorite peacemaker, Ken Sande. You can download and listen to Resolving Everyday Conflict, all three and half hours.

So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding. Romans 14:19 ESV

Sing Team

We have a new song playing on repeat. Oh! Great is Our God. We like it so much we downloaded the album of five songs. I even figured out how to burn a cd to play in the car.

Your way, O God, is holy. What god is great like our God? You are the God who works wonders; you have made known your might among the peoples. Psalm 77:13-14 ESV
