Highlight of the Year

I have two favorite pictures from 2012. Having all four children home for Christmas was definitely the highlight of the year.

Future and Hope

We had a guest preacher today. Pastor Bubba Jennings, a visiting Mars Hill pastor, preached about a passage often taken out of context. I am thankful that God knows the plans for us, and trust that His plans are always best. We have a future and a hope in Jesus Christ! For now and forever.

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11 ESV

Pull up a Chair

Our friends said they were going to DQ for dinner. Sounded good. So twelve of us from our community group met up there.

And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. Acts 2:42 ESV

While You Wait

The line at the store was taking a while. No worries. The lady behind me asked if I had an extra pen. And she tore a page from her Sudoku book to share with me.

What Really Matters

We didn't have many presents under the tree. That's because
our main gift was flying our son home for Christmas. It kept our focus on what really matters.

in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— Ephesians 2:7-8 ESV

Home is Where You Hang Your Stockings

It's crazy to move right before Christmas. But it was fun to be together in our new place. With a fireplace mantel for hanging stockings. (Even if the fireplace doesn't work.)

If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him! Mattew 7:11 ESV

White Christmas

We're keeping things simple this Christmas. Staying home. Enjoying family time. Including having all three adult children here plus our 12-year-old. With the bonus of a white Christmas.

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6 ESV

Home for Christmas

It's been a while since we were all together. Since July of 2011 to be exact. So we are thrilled to have our older son fly home from California for Christmas.

First Visitor

We were not expecting our first visitor at our new home. I opened the kitchen door and a bird flew in. My husband caught it and let it out.

Internet Coffee

No more going out for breakfast to check email. We now have internet access at home. We can go out for coffee just because.

In Faith

I don't know what God has for us in this next chapter of our lives. We are stepping out in faith that God will lead and provide. He can do that.

Arise, walk through the length and the breadth of the land, for I will give it to you.” Genesis 13:17 ESV

Keep Trusting

I love learning about Abram (before he was called Abraham). I appreciate how he trusted God even when there were lots of changes in his life. I can do that. With God's help.

So Abram moved his tent and came and settled by the oaks of Mamre, which are at Hebron, and there he built an altar to the Lord. Genesis 13:18 ESV

My stashes are being revealed. I had no idea I had so many envelopes of various sizes and colors. Padded too. I can donate some to the kindergarten class.

That's a Wrap

I thought we were done hosting community group in this house. But we can host one more time. And have a work party. Our friends wrapped and packed our entire kitchen and pantry. And all the paintings in the house. What a blessing.

Mailed with Love

My friend tucked something in the Christmas card she mailed me. A little package of tea bags. Perfect for enjoying after we move into our new home across town.

He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:8 ESV

Too Much Random

I was stuck. Could not sort one more pile of random papers and objects. But my friend called and offered her services for the afternoon. Just in time to make some progress.

The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore. Psalm 121:8 ESV

Here to There

How do we get from here to there? And move across town. Little by little. The sorting and packing process is overwhelming. But I will press on. As my friend in an assisted living home told me, my children will thank me someday.

Family Style

It was fitting that this morning was "family style." Mark Driscoll preached out of Matthew 1 about How He Made Us Family, the second in the God's Work our Witness series.

Our church met in a different building on the community college campus. Children sat with parents or in the back. We will be in the Student Union Building next week too, at 10 a.m. With cookies afterward.

New View

Looks like it is official. We are moving across town into a friend's rental. We will get our house ready to sell as soon as possible so we can reduce expenses. Let the downsizing begin!

Sweethearts

What happened to those two kids who met at a Bible study and became best friends? They got married on this day, 27 years ago. Now they have four kids of their own, two of them are the ages they were when they got married.

They are still best friends and thankful for every day they have together.

Happy Anniversary to my sweetheart!

Thankful for BSF

Every week I am thankful I am able to attend Bible Study Fellowship. This year we are studying through the book of Genesis. I love studying God's Word with other women and seeing what new things I will learn in the old familiar stories.

Then Abram said to Lot, "Let there be no strife between you and me, and between your herdsmen and my herdsmen, for we are kinsmen. Is not the whole land before you? Separate yourself from me. If you take the left hand, then I will go to the right, or if you take the right hand, then I will go to the left." Genesis 13:8-9 ESV

Fresh Start

If I had a do-over I would file as I go, print and label family photos, and stop clutter before it spreads. And organize, organize, organize. But it's not too late to reinvent myself. Here's to a fresh start.

On the Igloo

Our furry little friend didn't know what to think. We moved the guinea pig's cage from the living room to a bedroom. It took her two days to come down from her igloo. Change is hard!

And God said, "Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds--livestock and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds." And it was so. Genesis 1:24 ESV

East Meets West

I didn't know it was going to be such a cultural experience. We invited my parents and my in-laws to an early Christmas dinner. And invited my Chinese neighbor family to join us. It was the first Western meal and traditional turkey and ham dinner for the three Chinese grandparents.

With My Sister

Thanksgiving is about family. I had a couple days with my husband's side of the family. Then an afternoon with my sister, husband, and four darling girls.

I was also blessed to know my other sister spent time with my oldest son, who lives in California and wasn't able to return home for Thanksgiving.

Five Siblings

The clerk asked if I survived Thanksgiving. I said yes, but I don't view it that way. I was very blessed by the family times.

My husband's four siblings and families were all together. Including the newest member of the family, my in-laws' first great-grandchild. Plus my darling nephew, who is almost one-year-old.

Fiesta Love

Carry My Lesson

It's a good idea to carry my lesson. I can work on my Bible Study Fellowship homework if I am waiting to see my friend at the assisted living home. Or while being the designated spotter for my husband as he cleans a roof. Works for me.

Leadership and Passion

I appreciate my pastor. Mark Driscoll doesn't shy away from the difficult passages in the Bible. Like today's sermon on chapter eight of Esther. Does God condone killing enemies in the Old Testament?

Today's sermon also addressed how we change the culture. You can listen, watch, or read the sermon online. It is usually posted on Monday.

When the king held out the golden scepter to Esther, Esther rose and stood before the king. And she said, "If it please the king, and if I have found favor in his sight, and if the thing seems right before the king, and I am pleasing in his eyes, let an order be written to revoke the letters devised by Haman the Agagite, the son of Hammedatha, which he wrote to destroy the Jews who are in all the provinces of the king. Move Forward

I am glad the phone calls and ads are over. With the election behind us, how do we move forward? Keep praying. For our leaders, reelected and newly elected. And for each of us to do our part as God call us.

Pictured: My daughter's photo of the Olympia Capitol at night.

Noah's Faith

What was Noah thinking when he and his family hunkered down in the ark? And waited for the rain to start. Did they wonder if God was really going to do what He said He would? That takes faith. Trusting and obeying before you see how it all turns out.

And Noah and his sons and his wife and his sons' wives with him went into the ark to escape the waters of the flood. Of clean animals, and of animals that are not clean, and of birds, and of everything that creeps on the ground, two and two, male and female, went into the ark with Noah, as God had commanded Noah. And after seven days the waters of the flood came upon the earth. Genesis 7:7-10 ESV

I never know what to expect when I step in the door. I love finding artwork on display in my daughter's school.

Haves and Have-Nots

It's a case of the haves and have-nots. I'm not sure why there are power outages across our city. Our lights are on. But some places downtown and out of the city limits are out of power. I was happy to take some water to my friend who is in the dark.

Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. Hebrews 13:16 ESV

Seek God Before it's Too Late

I love the overlap. My Bible study through Genesis coincides with the sermons in church on Esther. Earlier week I learned about God's judgement and the flood. Today's sermon faced God's judgement head on. Yes, God is a God of love, but He also judges.

We were ready. Turkey chili on the stove. Hot spiced cider in the crock pot. Plenty of candy, thanks to Dan Dan the Candy Man.

Take a Turn

I can take a turn with the little kids. Volunteer during Bible Study Fellowship for one week. Wipe a few noses and tears, buckle and unbuckle in the buggy stroller, sing songs, wash hands, dole out Cheerios, read some books, build towers, and so on. Spend the morning with 12 active, busy, and adorable 2-year-olds.

Monday Blessings

It's hard to get up Monday mornings. But I made a commitment to meet with other parents and pray at school. So I get up and go. I am always blessed by the sweet prayer time and fellowship. With the bonus of hearing the children singing hymns and songs during Monday opening.

Jesus Gives a Better Identity

How do I see myself? What is my identity? Good questions. That's what I left church thinking about. I recommend today's sermon from Esther 5.

And when the king saw Queen Esther standing in the court, she won favor in his sight, and he held out to Esther the golden scepter that was in his hand. Law Man

I read it straight through. I highly recommend the prison memoir of Shon Hopwood, otherwise known as Law Man. He went to prison for robbing five banks. Redeemed his time. His journey from making mistakes to finding redemption is inspiring.

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight Ephesians 1:7-8 ESV

In Our Backyard

Looks like we have another green thumb in the family. My daughter grew some beautiful pumpkins. In our backyard. From last year's pumpkin.

He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. 2 Corinthians 9:10 ESV

Shine Through

This is the kind of project my daughter works on at school. Writing a paraphrase of Hosea 14:4-6. And etching it in clay.

Her paraphrase: Your splendor and mercy will shine through me and I will grow and be made new (Hosea 14:6).

I will heal their apostasy; I will love them freely, for my anger has turned from them. I will be like the dew to Israel; he shall blossom like the lily; he shall take root like the trees of Lebanon; his shoots shall spread out; his beauty shall be like the olive, and his fragrance like Lebanon. Hosea 14:4-6 ESV

My Job to Cheer

I am not a loud parent. But I take my job seriously. I am committed to clapping and cheering for the kids whose parents can't come to the volleyball games.

With extra cheers on behalf of my two friends who are in heaven.

Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 ESV
