Picnic by the Lake

I could get used to this. Big family meals. Picnics by the lake. Campfires. I love my sister and family.

Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. 1 John 3:18 ESV

Summer Cousin Fun

It all adds up. Trying to keep balance on a raft. Kayaking. Eating hot dogs roasted on a campfire. Sleeping in the living room. That's summer fun for cousins.

And above all these, put on love which binds everything together in perfect harmony. Colossians 3:14 ESV

Campfire Memories

Let the nightly campfires begin. That's my brother-in-law's plan for their time here. With a different menu each night. Starting with s'mores. Sounds like fun.

Return of the Raft

We only had to replace a few milk jugs. And exchange the metal chicken wire for plastic mesh. And the raft is back in business. Perfect for cousins who don't mind a little rain.

As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. 1 Timothy 6:17 ESV

Make Your Life Count

Today's sermon was a serious one. We came to the parable (little story that teaches a big idea) about the faithful and unfaithful investors in Luke 19:11-27. The first guy invested the ten minas (about three month's wages) and doubled it. The second guy took the ten minas and earned five more. Woe to the third guy who covered the stash in a hanky and earned nothing.

The point is to make your life count for God. Be faithful with your time, talents, and treasures.

I came away encouraged. It's not too late. I can start today and make the most of the opportunities I have been given. Start small. I can do that.

And he said to him, 'Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very little, you shall have authority over ten cities.' Luke 19:17

Have Wok, Will Travel

My brother-in-law didn't waste any time. After driving from Pasadena he set up his propane wok and cooked an amazing dinner. Nice to have my sister and family here for a week.

Community Group Soup

My husband and I had errands around town this afternoon and weren't sure how our scheduled community group meeting fit in the picture. But then we got a text from our host and leader: Beef veggie barley soup on for dinner. Funny how it doesn't take much to be a tipping point. We pressed on and made it to group! Glad we did. We were blessed by the fellowship, prayer, and Bible study. And great soup.

Rearview Mirror

We don't have to ask him twice. He hops in the car and is ready to go. Our golden retriever loves going to my parents' property and running free. Today's bonus was chasing the flock of Canadian geese off the beach. But we dropped him at home before we went to feed our friend's chickens.

Dinner to Go

We did the prep work at home. Marinated the chicken. Cut veggies to roast. Assembled an apple crisp. Whipped the cream. And took dinner fixings to my parents' home. Always good to spend time with my mom and dad.

My son, keep your father's commandment, and forsake not your mother's teaching. Proverbs 6:20 ESV

Good Sport

He is such a good sport. Letting me take photos to try out the settings on my camera. Hanging out with his little sister. Reaching the high places. Fielding phone calls at the house. I appreciate having my oldest around!

Love you, Dad!

Who loves me unconditionally? Cheers me on? Believes in me? Prays for me? Leads by example? And has for over forty years? That's my dad.

Love you, Dad!

Surprise Dad

What's better than having one of your children come home and surprise Dad for Father's Day? Our son got a ride home for the weekend. It was a real shock when our daughter showed up at church this morning. She borrowed a car and drove two hours one way just to surprise her dad. Attended church with us and then drove two hours back to her friend's house.

Man of Integrity

My children are blessed. They have a great dad who loves them unconditionally and is a wonderful example. Happy Father's Day weekend to my husband!

Blessed to Give

So we didn't open our Bibles tonight. But we did show the love of Jesus to a little girl. That's what a community group does for a little foster girl and her siblings. We gave her an 8th birthday party she won't forget.

In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'" Acts 20:35 ESV

God's Plans

There are some great lessons in the life of the prophet Elijah. But today when I read 1 Kings 17 I noticed how God worked. God allowed the brook to dry up. Which led to Elijah leaving his hideout and taking up residence with the widow. God had a plan. All along.

And after a while the brook dried up, because there was no rain in the land. Then the word of the LORD came to him, "Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. Behold, I have commanded a widow there to feed you." 1 Kings 17:7-9 ESV

We all have our contradictions. The things we say we will never do. But do. Or good intentions that fall short. I need to work on that. Beef up the follow-through. With God's help.

Doesn't Hurt to Ask

When I saw all the flags on the cars, I thought of my friend who is a huge hockey fan. So I asked a woman in the parking lot if she minded if I took a photo. Not at all. In fact, she would be happy to take my photo holding one of her flags.

Oikos Love

It's fitting that my son's church is named for the Greek word that means "family." We visited Oikos Fellowship in Bellingham. Loved the violin and guitar music featured today. We can see why our son likes the pastor. Heard a great sermon in a series on the Ten Commandments.

And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. Acts 2:42 ESV

Our College Grad!

All his hard work and focus paid off. Graduation in three years at Western Washington University. Congratulations to our son who received his degree in Political Science with a minor in Economics!

Looking Back at Fifth Grade

She had more more of the same. Memorizing Bible verses, chapters at a time. Singing Monday mornings. Oral reports. Chapel speakers. Field trips. Running the mile.

But this year as a fifth grader, there was a triathlon instead of biathlon. Volleyball. Overnight camp-out and outdoor school. Canoe practice. Singing every day with guitar or ukelele. Or both. Earning "five stamp" treats. It was a great year. Hello summer to my sixth grader-to-be!

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15 ESV

Mason Lake Love

We talk all the time. But sit down and visit? Not so much. But today my friend didn't have to work. She picked a good year to go on the annual school picnic. With her preschooler. We had a beautiful warm day at Mason Lake.

Do not forsake your friend and your father's friend, and do not go to your brother's house in the day of your calamity. Better is a neighbor who is near than a brother who is far away. Proverbs 27:10 ESV

Snap Happy

I need to get a little more snap happy. Move on from posed group shots. Even though they have value. Try to capture mood and emotions.

My favorite picture from the awards night was when my daughter and friends enjoyed cookies and brownies afterward.

And congratulations to the 8th graders who graduated tonight! You set a good example for the younger ones to follow.

I will praise you with an upright heart, when I learn your righteous rules. Psalm 119:7 ESV

Welcome Home Campers

So what if the fish didn't bite. My daughter had a great time learning how to cast. It was a fun camping trip for the fifth graders and parents. In a beautiful setting. They are all thankful for dry weather. They had good times, and good food. Including cornbread baked to perfection over the fire. Sounds like a great camping trip to me.

Ready to Wheel

We corralled supplies from all corners. Fishing pole from my parents' home. Tent from my in-laws. Sleeping bags from the attic. Hatchet from the garage. Wheelbarrow from the shed. And away my daughter and husband go for fifth grade outdoor school and camp-out.

Got Dunked

My son decided it was time to publicly declare his faith. And so he got baptized at the Campus Christian Fellowship event yesterday. What a great way to end his college experience.

To quote Danny:

"The CCF community at Western has really helped change my life. No community has ever invested in me as a person and Christian more, so there was no greater way to end my time at college and with CCF, than to get baptized at the last event after a steady progress of maturing and growing during my time here."

Recycling Angel

I don't have a badge. But I am the self-appointed recycling police. I fish cans and plastics out of the trash. Our trash.

We now have a recycling angel. My neighbor saw the garbage truck coming at 6:30 a.m. and rolled our cans down to the curb. Plus our neighbors' cans. Bless her.

Do Your Best

I heard the pep talk this morning. While checking in homework folders. The track coach told the kids to be mentally tough. And do their best.

It was the 4th and 5th grade invitational track meet today. My fifth grader got 4th in the 50 meter dash and 3rd in the ball toss. All the kids did great out there! Despite intermittent rain downpours.

On the Course

I got out on the golf course this morning. Dodged the flying objects and motorized carts. And walked a big loop. Just what I need. Exercise and fellowship. Let's make it a regular thing.

Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 ESV
