Give Them Grace

You don't have to watch the interview. Just listen while you fold laundry or make dinner. Or download it on your listening device. It will make you think about how you parent. Do you make your kids share? Say they are sorry, even if they are not? What does it look like to incorporate the gospel into everyday life?

It's worth the time to watch, or listen, to an interview with Elyse Fitzpatrick on the Desiring God site. About her new book, Give Them Grace: Dazzling Your Kids with the Love of Jesus.

But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 2 Corinthians 12:9 ESV

Memorial Day 2011

Old friends. New friends. Church friends. Family. Neighbors. This day had it all. Happy Birthday to my mother-in-law and Happy Memorial Day 2011.

Grandma Love

I know how much I enjoyed being around my grandparents when I was young. Still do. I'm thankful my children have the privilege of spending time with their grandparents. Today we celebrated my mother-in-law's birthday. One day early.

Happy Birthday Grandma!

Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, Titus 2:3-4 ESV

Ping Pong Love

I never know what that guy is going to do. Like today. I took a nap and woke up to find the garage all rearranged. And a new (to us) ping pong table set up! Courtesy of the Habitat for Humanity ReStore. And my amazing husband.

However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. Ephesians 5:33 ESV

Listen at Home

File this under: What took you so long to figure this out?

I don't have to leave home. And only catch bits and pieces on the car radio. I can listen to Christian radio programming any time I want. With my laptop and internet connection.

My favorites include R.C. Sproul and J.Vernon McGee.

You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. Deuteronomy 6:7 ESV

Thoughts While Driving

I am not going to budge. Even if you honk at me. There is a pedestrian walking in front of my car. I have to do what is right. Even if you don't understand or approve.

so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God. Colossians 1:10 ESV

Drink Up

I gave up fasting. Before getting my blood drawn. Turns out it isn't necessary for my six-month liver function check. I drank tea and hot water all morning in hopes that my veins would cooperate.

I had someone new today. She got the job done in one try. Pain-free. Hopefully the results will be good so I can continue with my weekly MS injections, which seem to be helping.

And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19 ESV

God Provides

I was hoping for a new camera. Even had one picked out, thanks to a friend's research. But no funds were available.

But God provided. My in-laws gave me a camera they weren't using. And my mom gave my son one of her battery chargers so his camera is back in business.

Day in the Life of a Community Group

One day last week:

Connected with someone from our community group in school parking lot. Found out the son was minus one sack lunch. I offered to deliver a lunch since I live close to the school. That afternoon had a prayer huddle with our community group leader and wife in the grocery store parking lot. And saw another member from our group and got a health update. I love community!

Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2 ESV

Let the Children Come

We weren't distracted at all. It added to the sermon to have a darling 10-month-old in front of us making faces and smiling at us. Pastor Mark Driscoll preached about Jesus welcoming the children. And how we can do the same.

But Jesus called them to him, saying, "Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Luke 18:16 ESV

Impromptu Patio Dinner

A little rain didn't stop the work. Or fun. My husband helped my parents with a bonfire today. Moved the hot dog roast to the barbecue under cover. And my dad put up the patio umbrella. Love those impromptu dinners with my parents.

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. 2 Corinthians 13:14 ESV

Fun Friday

Garage sale. Rummage sale. Time with mother-in-law. Coffee with an old friend. Visit with parents and garden tour. Help neighbor with errands. Dinner and fellowship with community group. With a nap in the middle.

As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. 1 Timothy 6:17 ESV

Martha on My Side

Our children brought us together. But our faith and shared interests bonded us for life. I am blessed to have a friend to laugh, cry, and pray with. Drink coffee. And garage sale.

Happy Birthday Martha!

Near in Heart

This is one of those days that I wish I had unlimited resources. I would drive down to Oregon and visit my sister. Drink tea. With sweetened condensed milk for her. Black for me. I would read books with my nieces. Maybe visit a couple thrift stores.

Probably laugh until I cry over some funny memory or incident.

Meanwhile, in honor of my sister's birthday today, I will not post a picture of her. Instead I will share a picture of a cute little niece. (Her youngest.) Love you, Sis!

Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. 1 Peter 3:8 ESV

Family Feast

My husband didn't consult me. He just made plans to invite people for dinner. His parents. And my parents. He knew I would approve.

Hamburgers and chicken burgers it is. Baked beans. Grilled asparagus. S'mores made to order. Strawberries but no ice cream. How about plain yogurt with a little sugar and vanilla? It was a feast.

As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. 1 Timothy 6:17 ESV

Lost My Routine

I feel lost without my weekly routine. I have a four-month break from Bible Study Fellowship. No more daily Bible homework. No more shared rides on Wednesday morning. No more mid-week coffee dates with my BSF buddy. I need to create a new routine. Soon.

I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word. Psalm 119:16 ESV

Sermon Notes: Righteous?

News flash: God is not impressed with you. God loves you! Today's sermon was from Luke 18:9-14 about the Pharisee and the Tax-Collector. With the religious guy boasting out loud and the tax-collector begging for mercy. Yes, we are saved by works. But not our works. We are saved by the free gift of what Jesus accomplished on the cross. We come to God empty-handed. And receive grace.

For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV

Stay At Home Mom

Just say no. To garage sales and rummage sales. Stay at home and clean house. Bake cookies while your husband does yard work. I don't mind passing on the garage sales. But rummage sales? Two of them? At least they weren't church sales.

Love it?

I have a friend that speaks in triplets. She is happy, happy, happy. Or when talking about driving in icy weather: scary, scary, scary. I might take that approach to decluttering. If I don't love, love, love it. Out it goes.

To God be the Glory

The testimonies came from women young and old. Long-time believers, and new. With a common theme. To God be the glory. It was great to hear what women have learned through the study of Isaiah all year. I think we all gained a clearer picture of who God is. Strengthened our faith. And renewed our commitment to share the good news with the lost.

Save us, O LORD our God, and gather us from among the nations, that we may give thanks to your holy name and glory in your praise. Psalm 106:47 ESV

Faith Questions

I don't know what the best response is. When they come knocking on my door. Today I commended the young men for their commitment to their faith. I passed on the offer of a tour of their church. And asked if they had any questions about their faith.

Maybe next time I will suggest they read the book of John in the New Testament and see what Jesus said about Himself. Then come back and we'll talk.

but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, 1 Peter 3:15 ESV

Taught Me Well

You don't need as much fabric as the pattern says. Or all the ingredients in a recipe. You can improvise, make do, and generally improve on almost anything.

Do the right thing, even if it isn't appreciated or understood. Relationships are important. So is communication. You can trust God with the big things in your life. And the little. Pray with faith.

These are just a few of the lessons I've learned from my mom.

Happy Mother's Day, Mom!

Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: "Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all." Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. Proverbs 31:28-30

So Blessed

We all need grace. God's grace. Not checklists. Or sappy sentimentalism. I appreciated what today's guest preacher shared about Mother's Day.

I am thankful for how much I have been given. Godly role models. Past and present. Loving husband and father for my four amazing children.

Surrounded by Love

I love being surrounded by my family. Tonight my husband and children put on an amazing dinner. Salmon, chicken, roasted veggies, including a new favorite, kale from my mom's garden. Plus Oreo truffles and cheesecake.

Happy Mother's Day to me! And my mom!

Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, Colossians 3:12 ESV

Mother's Day Weekend

My two college students surprised me by coming home. My husband and younger daughter did a good job keeping it a secret. Let the Mother's Day weekend begin.

He gives the barren woman a home, making her the joyous mother of children. Praise the LORD! Psalm 113:9 ESV

Six Book Day

I love giving away books. Especially children's books. I find homes for my bargain hunting treasures. Or my husband's favorite, clear room on our shelves. Yesterday was a six book day. For two moms with babies, one grandma, one birthday girl turning eight, and one bibliophile.

Loved Isaiah

I was sad to see the book come to an end. Did we really cover all sixty-six chapters of Isaiah? Yes. Just one more week of Bible Study Fellowship to go. Two friends came to the intro class today. They are ready to start the Acts of the Epistles study in the Fall. Me too!

All these things my hand has made, and so all these things came to be, declares the LORD. But this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word. Isaiah 66:2 ESV

Good and Bad

Good for me. I went out for a walk before dinner. No hat or gloves necessary. I don't know why I don't get out more often. But then I ate the rest of the chocolate bunny I found in the pantry. Bad girl. Confess and move on.

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV

Watch it Again

I got chills. All over again. The video of the Mars Hill Easter service is online. Complete with music and baptisms. Loved the music with the choir and instruments. (Shout out to my friends in the choir!) I got teary when I watched the baptisms, especially around the 1:18:21 time. It looks like a dad hopped in the tank to help baptize his son.

We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. Romans 6:4 ESV

Pray Persistently

Am I so hard of hearing? Does God have to tell me in different ways and through different people? It's time for me to become a persistent pray-er. Just like I am learning in Bible Study Fellowship. And church.

I can take God's promises and return them to Him in faith.

Am I trying to move the hand of God or letting God mold my heart?

And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart. Luke 18:1 ESV
