Good Work, Everybody

I dropped off the crew and left. My son and daughters went to work in my parents' garden and beach area. My son was a human plow, I heard. The girls hauled limbs and raked pine cones. I should have stayed around and watched my mom make fried rice. The kids raved about hers. Maybe next time.

Father and Daughter Moment

They had my blessing to go without me. Enjoy the day in Seattle. I had a quiet day at home last week. I love this picture of my husband and older daughter taken on the ferry.

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant 1 Corinthians 13:4 ESV

A Mess of Watermelon

I took a chance. Bought two big seedless watermelons reduced for quick sale. Juicy and flavorful. And both mushy. The family won't like that. Did a quick search for something to make with watermelon juice. How about watermelon raspberry lemonade? So I diced watermelon, threw in frozen berries, and blended. Strained it. Added water, lemon juice and organic sugar. Made the biggest mess in the kitchen on record. But the family likes it. They will enjoy the homemade Popsicles too.

Find Me

It's good to have a designated spot. Not everyone carries a cell phone and can ask, "Where are you now?" I heard a wife tell her husband at Costco: "If we get lost, go to the books." That works for me. If you can't find me, go to the books. Especially at the thrift store or a rummage sale.

But not at the grocery store. You'll have to check the aisles. I move in a counter-clockwise pattern starting with the produce. With pauses at the marked down sections.

For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Luke 12:34 ESV

My Kind of Day

I wasn't going to go. I need to deal with what I already have. But my younger daughter and I decided to check out a couple sales today. We never made it past the first one. A rummage sale. My favorite.

I found some great wool coats for my friend. Yellow, teal, cashmere, Pendleton plaid, and more. One dollar each. Books for my friend. Couple for me. My daughter found some 75 cent treasures: a new kite and a butterfly house, complete with coupon for 5 caterpillars.

My mother-in-law met us at the sale. And we stopped for coffee. It's all good.

Missed the Event

I wondered if anyone even noticed. Today a neighbor girl asked why we didn't have our neighborhood ice cream social this year. And mentioned my applesauce cake. Bless her. I will make every effort to continue the last day of school tradition next year.

Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. Philippians 4:11 ESV

Dad's Day Out

He deserved a day off. My husband went from teaching first grade to painting without a break. He finished his first house yesterday.

Just in time to go to Seattle and watch a baseball game with three of our children and a friend. They got their money's worth. Thirteen innings, in all. Too bad the Mariners lost. But my family had a great time on the ferry and in Seattle.

Coffee in the Park

I'm up for that. Seize the moment and grab a cup of coffee. With my good friend. A little late in the day? Just make it decaf. Works for me.

Peel Happy

It's good to see my old friends. My favorite apple peeler and my paring knife just like my gramma's. I baked two apple pies tonight in honor of having my oven back in working order. And shared some with the neighbors.

Pretty Smooth, Actually

Now we are six. Count out six plates and forks for dinner. Forget the cup-up marker for the dishwasher. Just fill it and run it. Buy milk two gallons at at time. Coordinate who's taking what car when. It's been a relatively smooth transition, I'd say.

Father's Day Sermon

The guest speaker was perfect for the occasion. With a sermon for Father's Day at the Chinese church in Olympia. He practices what he preaches, that's for sure. Consistently. With integrity. For over forty years. I know because he's my dad.

Happy Father's Day! I love you, Dad.

As a father shows compassion to his children, so the LORD shows compassion to those who fear him. Psalm 103:13 ESV

Bake Happy

I check the online ads several times a day. Anyone have a gas range for sale? Within 50 miles? Reasonably priced, works, not too old, not in storage with mice and/or cobwebs?

Today we checked our local appliance store "recon" section. The guy said we might be able to fix ours. As long as the broiler works, it just needs a new igniter. Bingo. My handy husband to the rescue. And we are baking with gas. Hooray!

Movie Day

This morning was moms and children. With a few dads and grandparents. It was a special first showing of Toy Story 3. My kids enjoyed it and so did I.

Tonight was ladies' night. Some friends and I watched the whole mini-series Wives and Daughters. I loved it. I'll have to watch it again with my older daughter. But maybe not all in one sitting.

Okay with Later

We broke the chain. After eleven years running. I wasn't up for planning and hosting the annual last day of school party in the loop. I'm okay with that. My neighbor and I might pull together a spontaneous event one hot day this summer. We can do that.

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: Ecclesiastes 3:1 ESV

That's My Gramma

That's my Gramma. Quietly in the background. Providing support. Unconditional love. With enduring faith. She blesses all of us.

Happy Birthday Gramma!

On The Spot

I am blessed when friends stop and pray. On the spot. My husband was encouraged when his friend said a quick prayer for him. Right there at the school picnic. I found a magazine open to this article when going through papers recently:

Don't delay: The gift of on-the-spot prayer by Art Hunt.

You can read the article online if you sign up for an account at NavPress. Or borrow my copy.

Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. James 5:16 ESV

Bounce with Me!

It's been a long time since I had a four-year-old boy running around. My neighbor was in a pinch for child care today. So we entertained a little guy. All day. He enjoyed the trampoline and riding his bike in front of our house. Good thing my daughter and sons were home to take turns "bouncing."

Note to self: dig out the Duplos and kid-friendly toys for next time.

For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." Galatians 5:14 ESV

Good Way

I choose to be thankful. Find something positive in the challenges. Can't bake in the oven? Good way to avoid temptations like brownies, cookies, and muffins. Can't drive the truck until the brakes are fixed? Good way to stay home and make progress on the projects.

And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Colossians 3:15 ESV

Good Man

I am surrounded by good men. I married one. We have two great sons. I appreciate how my older son really stepped up yesterday. First he worked for my parents in their garden. Then he rode with me to Bellingham and listened to all my radio programs without complaint. While his brother packed, he hauled boxes, baskets, suitcases, speakers, and more down flights of stairs and out to the vehicles. And unloaded when we got home.

Thanks, Son!

We give thanks to God always for all of you, constantly mentioning you in our prayers, 1 Thessalonians 1:2 ESV

Bring 'Em Home

It took four drivers and two vehicles. Two drove up and two back. Six people to pack and haul. Load and unload. Well, not all of us unloaded. Our youngest went to bed and I'm too tired. Two college kids safely home.

I can't believe I drove all the way to Bellingham. Three hours. Haven't driven that far in five years.

Good-bye and Hello

I'm sad to see it end. Good-bye school year. Good-bye predictable routines. Good-bye seeing friends every day. Hello summer. I wonder what new adventures lie ahead.

Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act. Psalm 37:5 ESV

Ebb and Flow

I love the ebb and flow. Give and take. In one day. My friend picked up my photos and saved me a trip to the next town. I delivered brownies to the high school baccalaureate because my friend couldn't attend. Without sampling them, I might add. My neighbor did a load of laundry here because her washer died. We can do that for each other.

Simple Dollar Love

It's not just about finances. There are book reviews and recipes. I enjoy The Simple Dollar, written by Trent Hamm. He gives practical advice. With personal stories. Today he shared some quotes from the late John Wooden, coach and philosopher. Two are good after an awards night at school.

“Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.”

“You can’t let praise or criticism get to you. It’s a weakness to get caught up in either one.”

Bake-Free Zone

It's time to expand my repertoire. Branch out in microwave cooking. Experiment with alternative baking techniques. The waffle cookies were a hit. If I get desperate I may try a rice cooker cake. I don't know when we will be able to replace our gas range. At least the four burners are still cooking with gas, even if the stove is on the fritz.

And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19 ESV

Night Lights

My, what good ideas they have. My youngest gathered a sleeping bag and blankets for the bed of the pick-up. My son experimented with settings on his camera. My husband purchased snacks. All the better to watch the fireworks show last night. They had fun and made a memory. I stayed home and kept the dog company.

Thanks to my son for this photo.

For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 2 Corinthians 4:6 ESV

Parade Love

It's not every day you see queens and princesses. Horses and goats. Classic cars and trucks. Goofy clowns. My friends in a World War 2 jeep. Not bad for a small town parade.

Pictured: My youngest took this photo. It was nice to see my friends go by and get an air hug!

Good for Over Nine Miles

Tires pumped. Check. Helmet adjusted. Check. Weather forecast? Not so good. But it ended up being a beautiful sunny day for the annual biathlon. My fourth grader didn't need rain gear after all.

The 4th through 8th graders and adult helpers biked 8 miles and ran or walked 1 1/2 miles. Maybe next year they can cross the river and make it a triathlon like originally planned.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, Hebrews 12:1 ESV

Set Them Free

It was time to set them free. Farewell to the painted lady and monarch butterflies the students watched develop from caterpillars.

Good-bye tree frogs. Enjoy life in your pond of origin after spending four months in the classroom as eggs, tadpoles, and now frogs.

No more life cycles in my husband's first grade class. If you don't count the tank of stick bugs.

And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that creeps on the ground according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. Genesis 1:25 ESV

Match That

It works for fund-raising campaigns. How about trying it at home? I challenged my son to match my minutes. If I walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes, he can go workout for 30 minutes. Whatever it takes to get moving. Both of us.

I will ponder the way that is blameless. Oh when will you come to me? I will walk with integrity of heart within my house; Psalm 101:2 ESV

Still Here

Break out the sparkling cider. We celebrate another anniversary in our home. The home that my husband built. With help from his dad. And our neighbors. Six of the original eight families in our Self-Help Building group are still here. Twelve years later.

By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; Proverbs 24:3 ESV
