My Turn to Help

Yesterday I drove by the couple holding the cardboard sign. "Anything helps, even a smile." That's all they got from me. But tonight the young woman in the grocery store seemed desperate. Could I loan her a couple dollars to pay for her prescription? No. I could do better than that. I went to the pharmacy and paid for her prescription. No need to pay me back. Could I give her a hug? Certainly.

But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. 1 John 3:17-18 ESV

Project Central

Could we wrap up projects before we start a new one? No. That's not how we do things around here. I have some organizing projects going. Now we have two college students sorting and packing. The main thing is to stay calm. Keep the kitchen clear enough to make meals. And fix dinner even if you think people have other plans.

And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. Galatians 6:9 ESV

That Came Together

They've been busy. We've been busy. Let's pool our resources and have dinner together. Start with the buffalo burgers I've been saving in our freezer. Supplement with my mom's frozen salmon fillets. Grill and steam veggies from my parents' amazing garden.

I brought my last marionberry pie. But it might not be enough. So I baked a chocolate cake for good measure. And my mom whipped up a pineapple upside down cake. Another great family meal.

Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. Hebrews 13:16 ESV

People Get Ready

I need to expand my focus. It's more than going from the relaxed-summer schedule to school's-in-session-get-to bed schedule. We're working on that. But we also have to transition from having everyone home to having people leave for college. You can't really prepare for that. But I can be praying. For all of us.

Schedule Adjustment

Can I turn this around? I only have a few more days and nights left. I want to get my daughter's crazy summer schedule adjusted. Every night there is some obstacle to my good intentions. I won't give up. There's always tomorrow night.

Pictured: I love this shot of my daughter hamming it up for the camera.

Berry Love

I was there 5 minutes after they opened. Got in line. Chatted with the fellow berry enthusiasts. Counted the flats (that's 12 half-pints) and half-flats going by. Hoped there would be some marionberries left by time I got to the berry stand. All gone. Until the second delivery arrived.

Time to make freezer jam, pies, and a berry crisp. That will have to last until next year.

Enjoying the Journey

I want what they have. A marriage that honors God. Teamwork. Commitment. Enjoying the journey together.

My parents are a great example.

Happy 48th anniversary, Dad and Mom!

Marriage Lessons

I better start thinking about my list. I have less than four months to come up with 25 lessons learned in 25 years of marriage. Here is Pastor Mark Driscoll and his wife's list of 18 lessons learned in 18 years of marriage. Good stuff.

Down With It

I'm impressed. And relieved. My husband spent hours taking our garage door apart. Panel by panel. Hammered out the bent sections. Reassembled it. Got it to come down. All the way. Good enough to get by for now.

Where's Grace?

My friend said she was looking for grace. Aren't we all? She meant Grace, as in the person. But it got me thinking. Am I looking for grace? More importantly, am I extending grace? Overlooking small offenses? Freely offering forgiveness? Letting people grow and change at their own pace? I can do that. With God's help.

But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, "God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble." James 4:6 ESV

Little Organizer

I told my nine-year-old that we needed to sort through her school uniforms. Some day soon before school started.

While I napped she set up a rubric. A pile under the smiley face was keepers. The frowny face was for the ones that didn't fit. The straight face was for ones that either needed mending or were undecided.

She is my little organizer. Love that. I need all the help I can get.

Love My Driver!

What would a girl like to do on her 19th birthday? Try out a coffee shop? Go on a shopping trip to IKEA? With her whole family? Go visit friends? How about all of the above. We'll take a raincheck on a barbecue with the grandparents.

Happy birthday to my beautiful chauffeur!

And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God. Colossians 1:9-10 ESV

Tent City

They vacated the living room. And moved the tent to the front yard. Perfect for pizza delivery. Now for a sleepover. Or is that sleepout? With a movie on the laptop.

Lake Fun

My kids are still enjoying the raft they made last year. Our dog included. I love this photo of my daughter and our golden retriever.

love you!

She's big on waving good-bye. And saying "love you!" Multiple times. When leaving or going to bed. I can still hear it when she's asleep or away. Works for me.

Hasn't Been Written Yet

I wish I had a sneak peek. What will this year's Christmas letter say? I know it will be something about God's provision for our family. After the loss of my husband's teaching position due to budget cuts. Meanwhile he is painting the summer away. That buys us a little time to figure out the next adventure.

He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. 2 Corinthians 9:10 ESV

Too Much Ding Ding Ding

It used to mean something. Ding ding ding. Check the lights or ignition. Now it won't stop dinging until you turn the ignition just so. So I ignore it. And almost locked the keys in the truck.

What about me? As a parent. Am I too much ding ding ding? In danger of being tuned out?

A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit. Proverbs 15:4 ESV

Get In Get Out

I was prepared. Old clothes that can get dirty. Water bottle. Book to read if I have to wait. You never know what the lines will be like on a Saturday. My husband loaded the truck and I was off to the transfer station. Otherwise known as the dump. But I caught a break. I got in and got out. No waiting. Works for me.

Load and Unload

At first I thought I wanted black. To match our refrigerator. And microwave. But as time went on, I decided that a working white dishwasher would be just fine. We considered buying new. Created a dishwasher fund. But I didn't give up hope on finding a high quality used one. Looked at one in a house previously owned by snowbirds. Hardly used? Check. Fairly new? Not hardly. How about someone who is switching from black appliances to white? We'll take it. Black and works great!

Now to start a garage door repair fund.

Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4 ESV

Hot Potato

It's like a game of hot potato. It goes back and forth and no one wants to be the last one. So inevitably I get in our truck or car and find it on empty. I have learned to expect it. And fill up the vehicle. It's a small thing I can do for my busy husband who is painting or pressure washing every day until dark. I am thankful that for now we have enough money in the bank to pay for gas.

And in fairness I will add that my children are good about filling up the tank or chipping in for gas when they've had use of the car.

And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19 ESV

Thanks, Phil

I don't know who Phil is. But my son appreciates his jumpsuit. I picked it up at a rummage sale and stuffed it in my bag. At one dollar a bag, I could afford to see if it fit anyone at home. If not, pass it on. It's perfect for the summer painting my son is doing.

Our Best Bites

They say don't shop hungry. Well, don't go to this blog hungry. The recipes sound yummy. The photos are amazing. And I love tutorials. Step by step with photos. Like how to cut mangos, pineapples, and lots more.

You Never Stop

I am so not ready. When did I become the parent of three adult children? Please be patient with me. God is not finished with me yet. I am thankful for some practical, come-along-side encouragement in the new book, You Never Stop Being a Parent: Thriving in Relationship with Your Adult Children by Jim Newheiser and Elyse Fitzpatrick.

Smell the Roses

Get ready for a new week. I resolve to take time to smell the roses. Notice the beauty around me.

He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man's heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end. Ecclesiastes 3:11 ESV

Real Date

I think that was a real date. Two of us. Out for dinner. Kids at home or at work. No grocery shopping involved. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.) We should do this more often!

Enjoy life with the wife whom you love, all the days of your vain life that he has given you under the sun, because that is your portion in life and in your toil at which you toil under the sun. Ecclesiastes 9:9 ESV

Family That Volunteers Together

My husband took a day off from his summer painting jobs. And volunteered his time painting the local pregnancy care center. All day. With help from the family. I was the designated go-fer.
I even took a turn back-rolling after my husband used the paint sprayer.

Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Romans 12:11 ESV

D for Desperation

I can change it up. Add some D's to my prayer life. Like what Jon Bloom wrote on the Desiring God blog. I think I have the D for Desperation covered.

Isaiah, Here I Come

I love how she put it together. Around a theme. Everything I need to start Bible Study Fellowship in the fall. A binder with custom cover, my fave notebooks (unlined, thank you), and a Starbucks gift card for our weekly tradition. What a great birthday gift from my friend!

Welcome to the World

Remember how I said they were having twin girls? Well imagine their shock when a later ultrasound showed one girl and one boy. After the baby shower for two girls and the nursery was all decorated. The happy news is that the Piper family welcomed two healthy babies yesterday.

Welcome to the world Whitsun Robert and Cadence Felicity. You can read how they named them on Molly Piper's website.

Family That Plays Together

That's a lot of talent for one family! Eight of them plus the mom put on a concert in Hood Canal Community Church, just down the road. I'm glad my daughters and I made it to hear the Voetberg family. I'm not sure what I liked best. The amazing fiddle playing or the sweet vocals on old hymns. Or how the siblings worked together side by side. It was all good.

Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! Psalm 95:2 ESV
